Bust through winter’s dark days Julie Cascio, UAF Cooperative Extension Service At breakfast, my husband moaned that each day is getting darker earlier in the evening. I, of course, reminded him that it is beautiful outside in December, even if it is shorter daylight. This season also brings us more time to participate in indoor activities.

Then we challenged each other to come up with ideas for busting through Alaska’s dark winter season.

Opportunities to enjoy outdoors despite the cold were numerous. Tasks to plow snow off the driveway, walk the dog or bring in logs for the wood fireplace continue. Weather changes offer time to ride 4 wheelers, snow machines or fat tire bicycles, too. Outside in the winter we can ice skate, cross country ski, walk with snowshoes, build a snowman or create a snow angel. (I bet you could name even more fun outside activities!)

When the winds blow harder and temperatures get colder, there’s more time to do activities indoors.

Holidays – Decorate with holiday ornaments, look up heritage’s celebrations of this time of year, learn how to cook and bake traditional or new foods for this season, make presents for friends and families are a few ways to use this indoor time this month.
