Beat winter blahs with cabin fever relievers Julie Cascio, Mat Su Cooperative Extension Service Cold, short days in winter can take a toll on our mood. To beat winter blues, and keep our spirits up, being active, spending time with friends and family, staying warm, eating healthy and more may help shift our mindset. Be active. It is tempting to sit around or sleep extra long on short, gloomy days. Regular exercise gives us greater resistance to stress, anxiety, and fatigue, while improving heart and lung condition. Participate in outside winter activities to take advantage of natural light and the upward mood nature can provide. Spending time outside (even when it’s chilly!) can improve focus and lower stress levels. Walk on the trails behind the Matanuska Experiment Farm. Try Nordic skiing at Government Peak. Snowboard at Hatcher Pass. If it is too cold or dark outside find a local community building or sports center to walk. Ask a friend to join you. Of course, as CDC recommends, wear a mask and keep 6 foot apart from those who don’t live with

you. Check out local fitness facilities or exercise classes. Catch up with friends. Communicating with others on the phone or through email can make you feel less isolated. Lively conversations can help reduce the gloom of winter. Make an effort to keep in touch with peo-

It’s also been shown that staying warm can reduce the winter blues by half. Keep warm with hot drinks and hot food, the National Health System in England suggests. Wear warm clothes and shoes, and aim to keep your home between 64 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Eat smarter. Certain foods, like dark chocolate, can help to enhance your mood and relieve anxiety. Other foods, like candy and carbohydrates provide temporary feelings of euphoria, but could ultimately increase feelings of anxiety and depression. Check out the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 that just came out for healthy choices. Keep your mind active. Identify indoor projects you have intended to tackle. Choose jobs that will give you a sense of accomplishment or satisfaction once completed. Or take up a new hobby. It could be anything, such as playing board games, singing, knitting, keeping a journal, painting, carpentry, or writing a blog. The important thing is to

have something to look forward to and to concentrate on. Maybe gardening interests you. Prepare for your garden by perusing seed catalogs. Or get an indoor houseplant with colorful blooms. Learn how to hone your Alaska Gardening techniques, start seeds, design a greenhouse or start a flock of chickens. Whatever way you chose to beat winter blahs, do appreciate the beauty of the season. Looking at winter as something special to be enjoyed can get us through the cold and dark. After all, the days are getting longer each day!
