This is true at every life stage, and it is never too early or too late to improve our choices to build a healthy dietary pattern. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans shares four guidelines to help make that happen. 1. Follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage. 2. Customize and enjoy nutrient-dense food and beverage choices to reflect personal preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations. 3. Focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages, and stay within calorie limits. 4. Limit foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limit alcoholic beverages. For most individuals, no matter their age or health status, achieving a healthy

dietary pattern means we’ll need to make changes in our food and beverage choices. This can be hard to do! Luckily, this doesn’t mean we have to eat the exact same thing all the time. Include a variety of foods that provide the nutrients we need. We can choose those that we prefer. • Limit added sugars* to less than 10% of calories per day for ages 2 and older and to avoid added sugars for infants and toddlers; • Limit saturated fat to less than 10% of calories per day starting at age 2; • Limit sodium intake to less than 2,300mg per day (or even less if young-

er than 14); • Limiting alcoholic beverages* (if consumed) to 2 drinks or less a day for men and 1 drink or less a day for women. Low-fat and fat-free dairy continue to be part of a healthy dietary pattern. The dairy food group provides nutrients, such as calcium, vitamin A, vitamin D, and protein that

help meet nutrient needs required across age and sex groups. For individuals who are lactose-intolerant or who choose dairy alternatives, the dairy food group includes low-lactose or lactosefree dairy products, as well as fortified soy beverages and yogurt. It is important to note that while there are other calcium-fortified plant-based “milks” on the market that can help an individual meet their calcium recommendations, they are not part of the dairy food group because their overall nutritional content is not similar to dairy milk. The Dietary Guidelines provides sciencebased recommendations on what Americans should eat and drink to promote health and prevent chronic disease – including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
