H o m e & G a r d e n Coping with stress
Julie Cascio, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, Mat-Su District Life’s ups and downs happen! Last summer’s warmth inspired enjoying our lakes, trails, gardening, hunting – all kinds of fun experiences. In the MatSu Valley, earthquakes, wild fires, flooding, and now the changes brought on by the pandemic have been occurring. How we handle, or don’t handle, stressful situations affects our lives.
Stress is the body’s reaction to the changing demands of life. Stress motivates us to get things done! Happy life events (such as having a baby, getting a new job) and negative events (such as death of a loved one, divorce, emergency situations, or financial difficulties) can cause stress. Children and adults of all ages experience stress.
An example of a current stress situation may be a change in the job due to the panJulie Cascio demic emergency. Staying at home to work or do school with others around may mean lots of distractions. Or may be more noise. This makes it hard to concentrate on work or homework. Getting up to get a drink of water may show chores that need to be done in the house. Focusing on work may make others in the home feel neglected. The inability to spend time with other family or friends may cause loneliness or the guilt of not helping. Yikes!
Stress can impact us physically and emotionally. Physical response to stress can delay the body healing or lead to ulcers or high blood pressure. Excessive crying, anxiety and anger are some emotional symptoms of the impact of stress.
In the Montana State University Extension publication “Understanding and Managing Stress” Dr. Sandra Bailey writes that finding positive ways to manage or cope with stress is essential to overall health. There are a variety of activities that can reduce stress. Some may do yoga to relax while others choose to ride a snowmachine. Activities may only take a few minutes; others may take a few hours or an entire day.
There are a variety of ideas for reducing stress. They do not need to cost anything. Keep in mind that not managing stress may result in a serious health problem.
Some people take things in stride, not getting upset when faced with challenges. Others become tense and are unable to effectively deal with the problem.
“How we perceive a stressor impacts our success in overcoming it. Those who see the stressor as an opportunity for growth handle stress much better,” Dr Bailey shares in the “Family Stress and Coping” publication.
Stressors can add up! Learning to manage daily stressors helps us handle stress better when larger stress occurs. Natural disasters are beyond our control. Acknowledging our lack of control and learning to let go of stressors we can’t control will help in reducing our overall stress.
Do recognize your feelings; don’t try to ignore them. Although it may feel painful, confronting your feelings and looking realistically at your situation are important steps to being able to cope. Talk with your family and/or friends. The feelings and stresses you are having may be shared by others. By talking, you can express, vent and accept your feelings in constructive ways. Together you can provide the support and reassurance to one another that can help build more positive self-esteem.
To better cope with stress, take care of yourself and your family. “Keep your body healthy. Eat balanced meals, get enough sleep and exercise regularly,” shares Linda Boelter and Joan LeFebvre in their University of Wisconsin Extension publication “Taking Care of Yourself.”
