Recycling repeats itself Episode 4

By Carol Montgomery As we continue down the evolving path of recycling, another major historical development was the passage of local ordinances in the MatSu Borough that greatly reduced the specter of plastic bag trash. It’s been almost 4 years now, but many of us probably remember what the Valley used to look like after a windstorm. Well, we sure had our share of wind AND storms this winter and people are commenting on how, in spite of so much wind, we are no longer wincing at the sight of plastic bag trash everywhere, waving from trees and caught in the brush. Thanks go to our elected officials and the Plastic Bag Committee for taking the initiative to ensure the cleaner environment that we enjoy today. Now that local merchants in the cities of Wasilla and Palmer have re-

placed plastic bags with paper ones, it’s important to keep in mind that those paper bags, along with all the cardboard boxes many of us seem to be receiving in the mail these days, are recyclable. Much of this recycled material is used by Thermo-Kool of Alaska, a local manufacturer, to produce cellulose insulation, hydro seed mulch, and livestock bedding. An even better way to reduce waste is to reuse those paper bags next time you shop, or better yet, bring your own reusable shopping bag to the store. During the pandemic, many shoppers got out of the habit of bringing their own bag, but now is a good time to revive that habit. Carrying groceries from the store is so much easier when using a permanent sturdy bag with good handles. Reusable bags hold much more than paper or plastic ones, necessitating

And nowadays, reusable bags come in so many colors, themes and designs, you can bag your groceries in style! Can’t remember to bring your reusable bags to the store? Try leaving them in your car, or using bags you can crunch into a small pouch that fits in your pocket or attaches to a key chain. Can’t remember to bring your bag from the car into the store?
