Emergency car supplies Julie Cascio, UAF Mat-Su District Cooperative Extension Service From a wild fire that flickers across the road, causing traffic to stop to avoid getting melted, to a bridge being hit by a large trailer, to an earthquake causing the road to buckle and fall apart there are many reasons Julie Cascio where danger can occur when we are driving a vehicle. To be prepared for emergencies, every vehicle should have an emergency supply kit located in the trunk. Kits should be checked every six months, and expired items should be replaced to keep it up to date. Vehicle emergency supply kits should include: • A properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack • Jumper cables • Tool kit and/or a multipurpose utility tool

• Flashlight and extra batteries • Reflective triangles and brightly colored cloth to make your vehicle more visible • Compass • First aid kit with gauze, tape, bandages, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, a blanket, nonlatex gloves, scissors, hydrocortisone, thermometer, tweezers and instant cold compress • Nonperishable, high-energy foods, such as unsalted nuts, dried fruits and hard candy • Drinking water • Reflective vest in case you need to walk to get help • Car charger for your cell phone • Fire extinguisher • Duct tape • Rain poncho • Additional items for cold weather include a snow brush, shovel, windshield washer fluid, warm clothing, cat litter for traction and blankets It’s also a good idea to keep family and emergency phone numbers, including your auto insurance provider and a towing company, in your phone.

Get ready, get moving! Julie Cascio, Mat Su District Cooperative Extension Service, UAF It is spring! This is a wonderful time to start, and improve, our healthy habits. There are four types of exercise – ENDURANCE, STRENGTH, BALANCE and FLEXIBILITY. This is important for older Julie Cascio adults, youngsters, and all those in between. ENDURANCE, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Walking is great exercise. It is an opportunity to visit friends in the neighborhood, or explore the Mat-Su. Reflections Lake Trail is an easy place to start walking. Matanuska River Park or Talkeetna Lakes Park are longer trail areas to move more. Hatcher Pass hiking trails help build more endurance. And there are more! For more places to ex-

plore go to https://www.alaska.org/destination/mat-su-valley/parks-and-trails With challenging weather conditions or moose wandering around, walking inside is a good option. Walking in a mall or large store is way to meet other walkers. Menards Sports Center, Wasilla, or the MTA Events Center, Palmer, have times for inside walks. These facilities can be used for other aerobic activities such as ice skating. Other options may be dancing - salsa, tango, square dancing, celtic steps. Use family gatherings to play team sports or do outdoor activities. Gardening Make fitting physical activity into your day a priority. Be realistic about how physically active you are now. Figure the time of the day you can accomplish the activity with other things going on (ie. Making meals, work, appointments, and other daily tasks). Do try scheduling 30 minutes of exercise every day. It may even be 5 minutes at a time, six times during the day. STRENGTH exercises work major muscle groups. The goal is to do this 2 or more days per week. There are several Strong

Women and Strong Senior programs offered in local Senior Centers and churches. Call me to find what may be available in your area. Another option is to garden. Lifting and bending when gardening are great for strength and flexibility. Gradually increase the amount of weight you use to build strength. Start with a weight you can lift 8 times. When you can lift it easily 10 to 15 times, add more weight. Whenever doing strength training, breath! Holding your breath while doing these can cause changes in blood pressure. Breathe in slowly through your nose and breathe out slowly through your mouth. BALANCE is important for everyday ac-

tivities, like going up and down the stairs. It helps avoid tripping and falling over objects in the way. Check out go4life.nia.nih.gov for exercises to practice balance. FLEXIBILITY Slowly and smoothly stretching into the desired flexible position, as far as possible without pain, is an effective way of working and expanding our muscles. Hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds. Relax, breathe, then repeat, trying to stretch farther. Yoga techniques are one way to do this. Exercise and physical activity aren’t just good for your mind and body. It helps you stay active and mobile as you age! Regularly including all 4 types of exercise will give you a wide range of real-life benefits.

Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone Diagnosing sleep difficulties PALMER – Lack of sleep is a widespread problem in America, affecting not only our mental alertness, mood and ability to focus during the day, but also our long-term health. Chronic, long-term sleep disorders impact more than 40 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) – and an additional 20 million people have occasional sleeping problems. “Your body has an internal clock or circadian rhythm that naturally tells it when to wake up and go to sleep by releasing hormones and changing your body temperature,” said Ross Dodge, M.D. “Often times these natural rhythms get off track causing difficulties sleeping.” Dodge clinically assesses patients with sleep disorders at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center’s Sleep Laboratory. During sleep, your body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure lower to conserve energy, the brain refreshes by removing waste and your body works to rebuild parts that have been stressed during the day. Lack of sleep is associated with many different disorders. Not getting the proper amount of sleep does not allow your body to rejuvenate. Stress-related insomnia, sleep disorders, lifestyle habits, and the failure to establish and maintain a regular routine are all to blame. Getting enough sleep is an essential part of keeping the body healthy and avoiding chronic disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), insufficient sleep contributes to the development of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Getting a good night’s sleep is especially difficult if you suffer from a sleep disorder. The most common sleep disorders include: • Insomnia – difficulty falling and remaining asleep • Sleep apnea – or the interruption of breathing during sleep • Restless legs syndrome – aches and pains in the legs that make it difficult to fall asleep and remain asleep • Narcolepsy – excessive daytime sleepi-

ness that sometimes results in “sleep attacks,” sudden and unpredictable episodes of sleep during the day.

One reason that sleep apnea may be diagnosed more often in men, according to the NSF, is that sleep apnea in women is commonly misdiagnosed as depression, diabetes, hypertension, hypochondria, or several other health conditions. Sleep in women is also influenced by the menstrual cycle, biological life stage, stress level, health, mood, parental status, work hours and other life responsibilities. As we age, sleep patterns change and sleep problems become even more common. A person may sleep less, experience fragmented sleep – dozing and waking in irregular patterns – or have more difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. These changes may also be caused by a chronic illness or medication. Also, as we age, our bodies produce less of the chemicals and hormones that help us sleep well, such as growth hormone and melatonin. When you need urgent care, view wait times and check in online.

Make your urgent care wait as short as possible. Save your spot now.

Diagnosing Sleep Disturbances If you’re having trouble falling or staying asleep, or experiencing daytime drowsiness, a sleep study can diagnose potential disorders and help with treatment. The study is performed in a controlled home-like environment while you sleep and is supervised by medical professionals trained in sleep disorders. Your body is observed and monitored to see what occurs during sleep, from snoring

Just answer a few easy questions, pick a time that works for you, and we’ll save your spot. We can even send you a text when it’s time to show up. Visit MatSuRegional.com to check in and skip the wait. Urgent Care is now available at three locations.

ridges and pits. As Harriette Parker writes in “Alaska’s Mushrooms”: The cap and stalk should be hollow and grow connected from top to bottom of the mushroom. Slice each morel open from head to toe as you collect it. Use a small brush to clear out any insects or other debris.

Collect and Enjoy Mushrooms should smell fresh and earthy. Do not pick any with soft spots or bruising. To ensure quality and avoid health risks, use food grad containers when hunting. Never spray insect repellent near the mushrooms. Do not use any chemicals on the palm of your hands. Store debugged mushrooms at 34°F, in a paper bag or waxed paper, for two to three days. For longer storage, freeze or dry the mushrooms. For more information check out the UAF Cooperative Extension Service publication “Collecting , Preserving & Using Morel Mushrooms” FNH-00020.
