Summer family fun Julie Cascio, UAF CES Summer has arrived! it is a good time to start and also to prepare for family fun and fitness activities. A Family Walk — is a great time to be together with your family. It gives us exercise as well. Find a safe area in your neighborhood to take a family stroll. Watch for moose. When seen ahead, back away. Then turn around and walk the other direction. Family Hikes — Find a safe and protected hiking trail where you can take a family hike. Put on backpacks, hiking shoes and pack a lunch on an exercise adventure. Be prepared for bears. Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports to j • Never approach bears. Give them space! • Make noise, sing or talk loudly. Alsways let bears know you are there. • Hike in a group; groups are easier for

Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen, even when it is cloudy or raining, will dramatically reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. On a cloudy day, 80% of the sun’s rays will still pass through the clouds. The depletion of the ozone has increased the risk of sun damage by UV rays. Wearing sunscreen will help prevent facial brown spots and skin discoloration from sun damage. Wearing sunscreen will also slow down the breakdown of collagen, which contributes to fine lines, sagging skin, wrinkles, and helps prevent thick and leathery skin.
