Summer has arrived! it is a good time to start and also to prepare for family fun and fitness activities.
A Family Walk — is a great time to be together with your family. It gives us exercise as well. Find a safe area in your neighborhood to take a family stroll. Watch for moose. When seen ahead, back away. Then turn around and walk the other direction.
Family Hikes — Find a safe and protected hiking trail where you can take a family hike. Put on backpacks, hiking shoes and pack a lunch on an exercise adventure.
Be prepared for bears. Alaska Department of Fish and Game reports to j • Never approach bears. Give them space! • Make noise, sing or talk loudly. Alsways let bears know you are there. • Hike in a group; groups are easier for
bears to detect. • Walk with wind at your back if possible. Bears can see almost as well as people, but trust their noses more than their eyes or ears. Check out www.alaskabears.alaska.gov for more information on being in bear country.
Bike Rides — Find a safe area to take a family bike ride together. Make sure it is a non-traffic area.
Exercise Videos — These are great fun and safe ways for the entire family and gives great tips to new exercise moves and routines.
Household Chores — Working around the house is a form of exercise. As long as you create a safe environment, children can vacuum, dust the shelves, wash dishes, rake leaves, take out the garbage, clean the garage or paint a room.
Wear Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen, even when it is cloudy or raining, will dramatically reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. On a cloudy day, 80% of the sun’s rays will still pass through the clouds.
The depletion of the ozone has increased the risk of sun damage by UV rays. Wearing sunscreen will help prevent facial brown spots and skin discoloration from sun damage. Wearing sunscreen will also slow down the breakdown of collagen, which contributes to fine lines, sagging skin, wrinkles, and helps prevent thick and leathery skin.
