Ask Cora Hey Cora: We just moved to Alaska and you were kind enough to help us find just the right house. We love it here, but this will be our first winter here. We have been told to have an Emergency Supply Kit. In case of earthquake or some other disaster. Any words of advice on that for a New-bee! Dear New-bee! Yes, of course I do! As we all know, disasters happen, look at North Carolina right now! And they had plenty of warning that the storm was coming. Here, wind storms can knock out power and earthquakes are a common experience but being prepared is critical. I recently went to a class put on by Taylored Restoration and they gave us some helpful hints on what to put in our kits. Let’s run down a few general things first: 1) An Evacuation Plan. This is really good for fire safety. Everyone in the family (even children) should know what to do if someone yells FIRE! Be sensitive and not scare your kids, but let them know where they are suppose to go. 2) First Aid kits and knowing CPR. First Aid and CPR classes are available, and most of the time can even be free! Call your local Red Cross and they can get you hooked up with the right people. 3) Location of an Emergency Shelter. It might be the school across the street, a fire station or a church nearby, but know where these places are 4) Know where to shut off electricity, water and gas supplies. The electrical is probably at the meter, the water is probably in the crawl space and the gas, somewhere around the gas meter. But you should know where these places are. 5) Utility phone numbers to call. Keep the numbers for the utility companies on your cell phones in an “emergency” category of your phone numbers so you can find it easily. Usually in an emergency, your brain can’t always react quickly enough to remember all the different companies to look up. Next we have 5 separate plastic boxes to keep your supplies in. Label them accordingly: Survival, Safety and Comfort, Sanitation, Cooking, and Tools and Supplies. Your emergency supply checklist is as follows:

Fuel for generators and vehicles SAFTEY AND COMFORT Change of clothing Tent Candles and matches or lighters Heavy gloves Knife or razor blades Garden hose for siphoning and fire fighting Crates for pets Cell phone and charger or solar powered charger Toys for children SANITATION Soap and toothpaste, hand sanitizer Garbage bags Diapers and baby wipes Household bleach COOKING Camp stove, propane bottles Plastic utensils Paper plates, cups, paper towels Heavy duty foil TOOLS AND SUPPLIES Ax, shovels, broom, saw, tool box Car inverter Coil of ½” rope Duct tape and plastic sheeting
