Hey Cora, Do we have a radon problem here in the Valley or is that just in Fairbanks? I have heard we should get a test and then I have heard that it’s not necessary here. Any Advice? Signed Skeptical Dear Skeptical: well, yes radon is something we should all have tested regularly. It can be abated, there are ways to vent it from your home. Some people think that if you are on a concrete slab, you don’t have to worry about radon, but that’s not true. So, let’s just go down this Radon Facts and you can see if it’s something you should do. Fact 1: Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas. It is naturally produced by the decay of uranium in the soil and rock and then released into the air and water. Fact 2: Radon seeps into your home from the ground beneath it. It can also be released into your from well water or building materials that contain radon, natural granite countertops, even some flooring that is mined from rock. Because they are closer to the ground, basements and first floors typically have the highest radon levels. Fact 3: Radon can enter any home, old or new, even those with no visible cracks. In fact, radon levels can be higher in newer, well insulated, tightly sealed homes – because there is no where for radon gas to escape to. The only way to now if your home has elevated radon levels is to test for it. Fact 4: Radon, the number one cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, decays quickly, breaking down into thin radioactive par-
ticles. When inhaled, the particles can damage the cells that line the lungs. Long-term exposure can lead to lung cancer. Below is a graph that shows the amount of deaths caused by Radon (I am so sorry, this is such a “bummer” article this month, but you need to know!) It was quite enlightening to me and I got my home tested when I saw this. The US EPA estimates that nearly 1 out of every 15 homes has elevated radon levels. In some states and counties, elevated radon occurs in more that 1 of every 2 homes! So, it’s a wide spread problem. This all sounds pretty awful – but preventable if you get your home tested. There are a couple of guys here in the valley that can help you. I had my testing done by Mike Divis with Fairview Consultants, and their number is 907-355-1066 or www. fairviewconsultants.com, they are licensed and bonded and know their stuff. Mike told me that you can’t just have it tested once and then you are done, he said that each time we have an earth quake, it can change the fissures in the ground that releases the radon. This convinced me to have my tested once per year. I was recently at a convention where I met Tyson Brauneis with Radon Rescue, contact info 907-357-2366. He suggests that you go to RadonIsReal.org and see what good information they have to offer there, but also agrees testing is the only real way to know. According to AccuStar, Professional Radon Laboratory, typically a radon system can be installed in less than a day at a cost far below most maDEATHS PER YEAR COMPARISON jor home repairs.
