Ask Cora Hey Cora, you answer lots of real estate questions for us that come up, but I would really like to know more about you – how did you get into the real estate business? Why have you stuck with it for so long? Sign Just Curious Dear Curious: interesting questions. I did not start out with a dream of being a realtor! Not at all actually. I was going to go to school to be a dental hygienist of all things! Where that came from I have no idea! But I always loved houses. In fact, where I grew up north of Seattle, there were many beautiful homes – large 100 year old homes were very typical, with all their wood work, secret rooms, and unfinished basements. I did purchase home in 1977, my first home. It was a small 2 bedroom, no garage but a nice wood shop and a beautiful garden. I was 17, and was not old enough to sign papers, so my attorney had to do it for me. I remember I was still in high school and I had to leave early one day to go to the title company where the papers were being signed. I was not required to go, but I wanted to be there when it all happened. I went to the principal and told him that I would need to leave early because I was meeting my attorney to sign papers on my new house. He and I had become friends and he knew that I had specific goals. He signed my excuse, and I drove to the title company to be there for the exciting moment. I always appreciated that he new and understood that I had ambitions and was going to pursue them even before high school was over. I worked for a publishing company in Seattle called Warren Publishing, Tot-Line Press. Both of these were owned by the same person and she wrote books for teachers to use in the classroom. I was a staff illustrator. Now you have to remember, this was long before computers were used to draw and animate. These were simple drawings, in black and white, because color was way too expensive to print. I had to create a character, that would be used in a series of books that included stories, art projects, and illustrations on putting a project together, like “fold here” and “insert tab A into slot B” and that sort of thing. It was a book, plus a visual aid packet for preschool and kindergarten teachers. It was a really fun job. I had assignments, worked from home, read the manuscripts and then drew what I saw in my mind. Editorial meetings could be rough sometimes, because what I saw in my mind, wasn’t necessarily what the editor saw in her mind! But drawing, painting, art in general were always part of my day to day life and the way I
Brought to you by earned a living. In 1996, my husband wanted to move back to Alaska, and I had never lived here before. I met him in Seattle, and had been here once with him since we were married. I was game! Sounded fun and Warren Publishing had just been bought by a Canadian company so my job was about to go away. Once we got to Alaska, I started to look for another job illustrating – it was really all I knew, I thought. My husband was a general contractor and I would sometimes help him with plan designs. I loved designing plans – it was so much fun imagining the people that would live there and also drawing these “spaces” for a purpose. I wanted homes and rooms to be flexible as peoples’ lives changed. I also loved to see something 2 dimensional become 3 dimensional. It was so satisfying to see an idea in your brain become something that people could measure the years of their life, with their children and later grandchildren. So, as the husband began building, I noticed that the realtors that he had hired were not selling the home the way I designed it. I mean, they were small homes, but had specific reasons why things were designed they way they were and it frustrated me that this was not being expressed to the potential buyers. I told my husband and he said “well why don’t you get your real estate license then!” Humm interesting idea I thought, YES I will do that. For years I only sold his product. I never sold anything but his new construction, until I was asked to list a home. I had always said no before – but why not, I could do that. So I did. And then there was another one and another one. Pretty soon I knew just as much about selling existing homes and I did about new construction – and it was fun! I got to look inside all these very interesting buildings and homes. I got to give advice on how to “cheer up” a home, or what to do to get it to sell quicker. It was surprising to see all the different things you could do with a real estate career. Now don’t think that I gave up drawing or painting or all those creative outlets, I just use them in different ways. To be a good real estate agent, you must be creative! There are so many loan programs and different types of properties and a 1000 different ways to make a good deal come together. So that brings us to now, I have been in real estate for over 20 years, have met some wonderful people, have learned more than I ever thought possible and continue to be educated on a daily basis it seems. I have worked with couples finding their first home, with military guys looking to get off base, with widows and empty-nesters, with investors and business owners. It’s always fun, always challenging and always a pleasure to meet new people and to help them meet their goals. That was an interesting question, and I don’t always put the whole thing together, but I guess houses have always been fascinating to me! I always said real estate was my “accidental career” but maybe it was always meant to be.
