Fab Five Honored in Juneau Legislators and Staff Receive AaNA Awards by Lynn Hartz Wrangell Representative Peggy Wilson on left and Senator Bettye Davis of Anchorage with AaNA awards recognizing their contributions to the profession of nursing in Alaska.
The AaNA legislative committee organizes the annual Fly-In. Members from each affiliate group are invited to have a member on the committee so that the broadest spectrum of nurses are represented. This spring, the committee voted to make the Juneau Nurse Fly-In dates to occur annually on the third week of February. So, next year’s dates will be February 14-15. Come join the fun!
On March 16, three state legislators and two of their staff-members were honored with awards from the Alaska Nurses Association during a reception in Juneau. Senator Bettye Davis, Representative Peggy Wilson and Representative Bill Stolze were recognized for their work and dedication in advancing and supporting the profession of nursing in Alaska. Senator Davis and Rep. Wilson sponsored SB12 and HB 50, bills limiting mandatory overtime. HB 50 passed and is now in state statute. Rep. Stoltze’s support was crucial in the eventual passage of the bill. Rep. Wilson’s Chief of Staff, Rebecca Rooney and Thomas Obermeyer, legislative aide for Sen. Davis, were also honored for their hard work and hours spent on the legislation. The ‘Fabulous Five’ were honored at the annual reception hosted by the AaNA in Juneau, part of the annual nurse Fly-In. Nurses flew in from around Alaska to educate and be educated by legislators. In addition, this year nurses met with Karen Perdue, President and CEO of the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association (ASHNA) as well as Jason Hooley, Director of Boards and Commissions in the Governor’s Office and Jeff Jessee, CEO of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority.
