BAPTIST CHURCH 1919 - 2019
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Psalm 133:1
THE HISTORY OF SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH 1919 - 2019
1919 is the earliest date we found recorded. This date was found engraved on the church cornerstone of the old church. After talking with people who had knowledge of those days, the story goes like this……….. Rev. Edmond Simmons set out to build a church of his own. New Jersey was mostly farm land during this time. We don't know exactly how many years this went on before the building was finished, but the church was finally completed on the date carved on the cornerstone, 1919. Rev. Simmons was the pastor of Shiloh until 1933. Rev. Tuggle took over and served until 1939. In that year, Rev. H. Williams was placed in charge. Rev. Ulas H. Mays was sent to us, who served from 1960 to 1962; Rev. Edward Scott was chosen to the leadership. After 55 years, because of deteriorating of the old building, it was time for a new Shiloh. Ground breaking for the new church was performed in 1974. In 1975, Rev. Edward Scott resigned; Shiloh went without a pastor for 2 years. With lots of fasting and praying, we were blessed with Rev. Eugene Bryant, Sr. in 1977. In March, 1978, we had a re-ground-breaking ceremony to construct the new church. These are the people who put up their homes for collateral to build the New Shiloh Church: Mr. & Mrs. James Edwards, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Price, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson and Mr. & Mrs. John Childress. In 1979 Rev. Eugene Bryant, Sr. marched us into the new Shiloh Baptist Church and in 1987 the mortgage burning ceremony took place. God still continues to bless 100 years later. The front of the church has been bricked, a heater room was added, the heating system has been converted, Shiloh has 2 vans for the work of the ministry. We are in the very last stage of extending our dining hall and kitchen as well as adding a second floor to better serve our seniors, youth and help those in need within the community. We also would like to thank the following families for helping complete the 4 rooms upstairs: Rev. James & Maggie Russell, Mrs. Hazel Nelson, Emma Jean Bryant & Family, Deacon James Robinson and his family as well as the Price family. We, the members of Shiloh Baptist Church, 640 Philadelphia Ave., Egg Harbor City, NJ, pay tribute to Rev. Tuggle, Rev. Williams, Rev. Mays, Rev. Scott and Rev. Eugene Bryant, Sr. who just celebrated 42 years of pastoring this church. These leaders have contributed much to the continuance of God's work, each in his own way.
TO GOD, WE STILL GIVE THE GLORY!!!
Minister John Murphy Minister John Murphy has always been the pastor of the Living Word Ministries since it was founded in 1992. He is a son of Shiloh Baptist Church, located in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey and was ordained as a Deacon under Pastor Eugene Bryant's leadership and was called by God to preach, he was licensed to preach while serving at Shiloh. John Murphy was born and raised in Opelousas, Louisiana to Willie and Lillian Murphy. He attended public schools in Opelousas, Louisiana. At the completion of his military tour in Frankfurt, Germany, he then returned to the United States of America and received an Honorable Discharge from the U. S. Army. John Murphy lived and worked in New Jersey for eighteen (18) years, then the family moved to Opelousas, Louisiana where they are currently residing. Pastor Maria L. Brooks Pastor Maria L. Brooks is an Atlantic City native who was reared in the Bungalow Park Community. An attendee of the Atlantic City Public Schools, she graduated with honors and went on to pursue a career in education. “Train up a child in the way he should: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6) “Reverend Brooks credits and pays homage to her 1st teacher, her Mother, Dolores Adell Brooks, who instilled in her the meaning of ministry. Some of Rev. Maria's fondest memories are those of her mother reading Bible Stories and kneeling bedside with her and her twin brother praying in unison, "Now I lay me down to sleep..." It was her mother's devotion to God; continuous prayers; love and guidance that compelled Pastor Brooks to work tirelessly in the ministry in various capacities. It was these formable years under her mother's watchful eye that molded, shaped and sharpened her for what would lay ahead. Reverend Brooks was humbled and blessed to have had two powerful and dynamic mentors in her life. In 1994, at the age of 18, she met her then pastor, Reverend D. S. L. Madden, Jr. It was through this encounter and under his tutelage that she received her formal training and call to ministry. In 2011 with the leading of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Brooks became a part of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Family under her Father and Mentor, the late Bishop William L. McClurkin, Sr. He too recognized and nurtured the anointing and calling on her life and in June 2014, he along with the other presiding elders of Christians Networking International, Inc., Kennesaw, Georgia ordained Rev. Brooks as a minister of the gospel. As Bishop McClurkin's health declined, Pastor Brooks assumed more responsibilities at the church and when he was called from labor to reward in December 2017, she was elected and served as Mt. Olive's Interim Pastor. During her tenure there, she brought new, creative and innovative activities and programs to Mt. Olive. “I know the plans I have for you....” Following years of preparation and demonstrating unwavering faith, God birth and released her to embark upon her own ministry. True Deliverance Praise and Worship Center held its inaugural service Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019. Holding true to Galatians 5:1, her mission is to equip others to experience the future God has for them; emphasizing God's desire to prosper His people in every arena of life, all while compelling His people to do their part in winning the world to Christ. Pastor Brooks is eager to see all that God has in store desiring to see individuals fully embrace His love and experience the fullness of His promises.

To God be the glory for the great things he has done! I greet you in the name of Jesus the Christ. Out of the 100 years that Shiloh has been standing, I've been your pastor for 42 of those years. Pastoring continues to be my passion, my purpose and my pride. So, I say congratulations for 100 years. As I reflect back over our journey together, there have been some mountaintops, as well as some valley experiences. However, God has remained faithful. I first want to thank God for all of his many blessings he has bestowed on us. It has only been because of his grace and mercy that we have come this far by Faith. I am grateful to God for allowing me The opportunity to pastor this vineyard, the Shiloh Baptist Church for these last 42 years. As I reflect over the years, we can truly say that God has done great things and we are glad. With all of us working together in unity, we can make this ministry all that God would have it to be. So, I admonish you as Paul did in Galatians 6:9 "And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not." I am thankful to all of the offices in Shiloh for your leadership, sacrifice and commitment. Words could never express my gratitude to my son's and daughters in ministry as we serve together for the cause of Christ. As we continue to serve in our community of Egg Harbor City, my prayer is that our Lord will richly bless each one of us. Let's continue to work together to strive for the advancement of the kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
