From the Editor: Look around, everything is constantly identified, categorized and placed within a folder, drawer, table, bag or cabinet. With daily routines emphasized by constant repetition it can be relatively simple to fall into a trajectory of blurred intentions. Coffee - work - break - work - yoga - sleep, repeat. To truly experience what many call ultimate bliss, it is vital to experience life with slightly unorganized categorical harmony. Becoming aware of the present moment and forgetting the need to plan and categorize time into planners, calendars and folders is the answer to a seemingly uncomprehendable equation. With an undisclosed amount of time in what we call home the only thing that causes euphoric sensation is the unknown. In NAAM’s premiere issue, we categorize what some may know and what some may not know into the concept of a noun; a person(s), a place(s) or a thing(s). Nouns are a cognate of the ancient green Onoma also meaning name (naam). Their implied informal contexts of semantic properties have been criticized as being uninformative according to Ray Jackendoff. Often the uninformative can be the most informative properties of a person, place, thing, event or idea. Naam introduces Sarah McDonough, a graphic design enthusiast who’s German influence and Texan upbringing gives her approach to design an eclectically modernistic style. Naam also features five designers from the Savannah College of Art and Design who’s ranging styles are the abridgement of diverse ideologist concepts in the southern city of our cover story, Savannah, Georgia. Many may recognize this place from Forest Gump, or The Garden of Good and Evil, but this comforting historic town can bring the southern soul out of any northern upheaval - even in only 48 hours. Finally, there are many ways to get discomforted from habitual standards, yet the art of the voyage presents trends and trinkets for the spontaneity of a carry-on, to the premeditated strategy that the checked in luggage presents itself with. There are many uncharted territories that are available to explore, and many people in this world who withhold information about people, places and things that I challenge readers to get uncomfortable this season with the question, where are you going? trajectory of design. Everything is designed. As one starts to ponder the ideology behind such a state-
ment it starts to occur that there are many truths derived from these three words. It can begin from the actual lettering categorizing thoughts into a single form to express such an idea. Language is the most fascinating concept of design for several reasons. Communication in this world is the mecca for cognitive clarity, a subject identified in this lecture. Communication is the way in which people interact, love, interconnect and converse to appreciate and counteract the perspective of a specific notion. With the world becoming progressively seamless and omniscient, societies are being redesigned in a way for peoples minds to comprehend and understand cultures in a way in which has not been done before. Designs from a variety of cultures are melting together to create a world that is engineered by subliminal intention. Dima Strapchev, a multidisciplinary graphic designer currently working and living in Prague owns the domain everythingisdesigned.net. When traveling to this website the homepage greets a viewer with an image from the perspective of an individual looking down at their broken-in Converses. There is a stone in the ground with Chinese hieroglyphs, and if one were to simply see this image one would assume it was taken in China. She then explains in her excerpt of “Manhole to China that very little is required to create an allusion. The photo was actually taken in Prague. This very simple statement emphasizes the concept of subliminal messaging in design. Small dissonances are invented to inform, persuade and change behav-
iors of consumers in this world. This world is obsessed with consuming services and consuming products. Or are we? It really is the designers who emphasize this concept so people are subconsciously trained in a particular cognitive dissonance to believe they need and want products designed. This language is translated into desires. A part of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that is not listed at the top, yet the mind is addicted. It is a puzzling concept that is so interesting to ponder. This idea that everything is designed couldn’t be truer. People are born into this world onto a blank canvas. The individuals around them including friends, family, political figures, advertisements, architecture and technology subliminally train the mind to settle with existing designs. As a human it is important to never forget that design can always be transformed and created to a specific target. Different cultures are influenced by different styles which is what I find most fascinating about design.. Russians enjoy the most expensive products, logo products fascinate Chinese consumers, Europeans invest in higher quality products, while Americans are obsessed with over consumption of fast fashion. Countries are designed and defined by the people living in them. Generations of today must stop over consuming to have a bright future for upcoming generations. Yet, as designers and business owners we are ashamed of our desires. Design in every form is an idea of a vicious cycle influenced by the concept of human wants and needs. The definition of the word

P: Tell me a little about your educational background and any major influences which led you to pursue graphic design. S: I have always enjoyed creating things with my hands. When I was younger, I started making collages and paintings that eventually took over my room. As time went by, that interest moved into more computer-based design. I enjoy working with a lot of mediums so any project that combines working on the computer and using handmade elements is most ideal. In high school I enrolled in a Parsons summer course for Film and Technology. There I was introduced to the design software that I use daily and I love everything about it. I am constantly amazed by all the things that can be done simply by the click of the mouse(as cliche as it sounds, its true!) I am constantly learning new things and never get bored. I credit that summer and my high school yearbook sponsor for helping me discover what I wanted to pursue. P: How has your style including fashion choices, design influencers and personal aesthetic changed throughout the year and how would you describe it? S: When I first started designing I was more concerned with filling up spaces with content that didn’t necessarily need to be there. As I’ve gotten older and after going to a design university, I’ve learned that less truly is more. I love this quote that I came across a few years ago: “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” -Antoine de Saint-Exupery P: Give me your routine, 24 hours of Sarah McDonough. What are your daily routines? Recently I started a 9-6 job so my days are pretty routine but I make sure to make the most of living in New York City on the weekends. I usually start the day by going to my favorite coffee shop, Stone Street Coffee Company in Chelsea(I highly recommend their cappuccinos.) I’m a digital designer so I am usually responsible for working on the website, e-mails, and all things social media. Our company recently moved all design work in-house so we

are constantly busy doing one thing or another. P: Who are classic designers that have influenced your style along with people you follow for inspiration along with other artists you may have seen along your travels. S: Classic Designers: Josef Müller-Brockmann, Alexey Brodovitch, and Otl Aicher. Designers I’ve recently started to follow: Martin Oberhäuser, Marta Vargas, Lotta Nieminen. Other: Artists: Architect Charles-Edouard Jeanneret and Photographer Richard Avedon P: What do you hope to achieve within the next 5 years and where do you see yourself ultimately living? S: I see myself living in a city with a bigger outdoor scene. I love riding bike trails and hiking and unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot of that around NYC. Ideally, I would like to own my own paperie/coffee shop one day… Coffee and stationery are two of my favorite things. Location is yet to be determined but Vancouver sounds pretty enticing. I enjoy working in the fast paced fashion industry and in one of the busiest cities in the world but I would like to try a change of pace in the future. But life is so unexpected I’m sure I will be doing something completely opposite.
friend and I took a ferry out to the island for a day and even though it was raining, I had one of the best experiences of my life there. We got to explore the wine country and hike some breathtaking waterfalls along the way. In Auckland, my favorite shop with coucou they had a variety of eclectic finds that I loved. I am still waiting to go back and sky dive since the last time I was there my session was cancelled due to plane malfunctions! P: What is your favorite project you have recently completed? S: I started working as a digital designer six months ago for the jewelry design company, David Yurman. On a day to day basis, I assist with digital ad campaigns, e-mail marketing and asset creation for web and social media. I execute production of digital creative assets including web page imagery, e-mail imagery, social media, and online advertising. I have always loved print production but working with web has been a wonderful experience. At DY we recently restructured the entire website and plan on launching a 3.0 version in October 2014 so get ready for an even more user friendly/beautiful site! P: When you own a house one day what are 5 things that will be on your coffee table?
P: When traveling, there is always one moment when I wish I could stop time and savor that moment. Where is your favorite travel destination and specific restaurant / store / or hotel at that location that has given you this euphoric feeling?
S: 1. My texas coasters to remind me of home.
S: My favorite travel destination thus far is New Zealand. While I was there, I was lucky enough to explore an area prominently known for its wine called, Waiheke Island and it was simply amazing. I was staying in Auckland and my

Lillian Dillustro is a girl who’s personality is unique, just as her style and aesthetic. She is a New York City fashion designer who believes the process is just as important as the final result. Her visions of fantasy embody dream like scenarios to stifle the very serious issues that are present in today’s society. For Lily fashion is not just about the future, but rather the past. “I love how the history of fashion create such an interesting portraiture of women through time, the clothes we wear say so much about our priorities and where we see ourselves in relation to our surroundings.” This idea is very present throughout all of Lilly’s designs. Chosen to be featured in the Savannah College of Art and Design Senior fashion show, her final pieces were not created to be wearable, but rather to tell a story; to create a smile and a laugh. Her inspiration for her designs do not come current trends and forecasted looks, but rather the people of the world in which we live. The elderly, the children, the homeless and the people in uniform are all personified throughout her work. In the future Lily doesn’t know exactly where she sees herself as “it would be so boring to already know.”

Abby Skaggs is a free-spirited, coffee addicted soul who looks at herself as an aspiring designer or artist rather than an “Architect.” The reality of being an architect to Abby is seemingly shallow considering it would inhibit her passions and aspirations. Architecture to Abby is rather a way to build a strong foundation for what her influential aesthetic will be in the future. Her aesthetic and inspiration is “an internal process of critiquing other work and intrinsically understanding the design principles behind whatever it is I am looking at that makes it so appealing to me.” Being from Chicago, Abby was able to unknowingly start the design process from a young age by being surrounded by amazing architecture and art that outlines the windy city. Any good designer has the recipe to design each idea in a unique and different approach, and abby does an incredible job creating structures with luminescent harmony and balance. Her work is truly beautiful and complete both aesthetically and logistically.

#FOODPORN Michael is an illustration god who strives to create a body of work mirroring the feeling emulated when storytelling or listening to classic fairy tales. The renditions of repetitious ideas that have been passed from generation to generation creates distorted ideas leading to whimsical portraiture. Michael has recently developed this infatuation considering the details within an individuals facial expression, attitude, hair, clothes and demeanor. Michael is influenced by Tamara de Lempicka, a Polish Art Deco painter and the first woman artist to be a glam-
our star. Her bold artistic style was inspired by soft cubism and epitomized by the cool, sensual side of the art deco movement. Throughout his work one can see small details of aesthetic that run parallel to one another through subject matter and color stories. The details of femininity throughout his body of work creates a style of an undisclosed personality. Muddled colors of warm pinks and vague blues embody a sense of sensuality throughout elongated body parts creating emotion and personality of each and every character.

Tucker Klein is a humble basketball connoisseur who also happens to be a very talented animator. Having the ability to understand the way in which forms move is the ultimate task of an animator (after all, Tucker creates life.) His “loose and sketchy” aesthetic is the sum of studying, sketching and practicing. Tucker’s work is often described as “in the pursuit.” Elaborating on the ideology of the way people look, move, interact, and feel thus creating forms who glisten with life. Tucker’s work is heavily influenced by the legends of animation history such as, Glen Keane and Milt Kahl. With that being said he is incredibly inspired by artists similar in age to Tucker. “There seems to be something incredibly inspiring and fresh about our generation. To get nerdy, I also think technology is really really awesome and that future of art, animation and all story telling is going to get even cooler because of it.” Tuckers work is realistic, inspiring and emotional. His modernistic and minimalist approach to animation creates fluidity that embodies movement of the utmost detailed memories.
