from the editor IF YOU’VE READ MY letter before then you know how often I emphasize the primary goal of Alabama Baby
& Child: to help new and expectant parents connect to the wealth of local resources available to them in our city. We have such an abundance of resources in our area, in fact, that it’s impossible to pack them all into one issue, so this year we will highlight different parenting resources in each issue we publish. We kick off the year this issue with a guide that features private schools, special needs resources, museums, attractions, and women’s hospitals in our area. Moving forward, each issue will feature guides to help you stay connected to everything you need as a parent, from all things newborns to creative birthday party ideas, we’ll cover it. We know that most people get their information now thorough digital resources, smart phones, and tablets. We now offer an Alabama Baby app that you can download for Apple or Android products to help you stay informed and connect directly with all we do. If there is something you would like to see in one of the guides or on the website please e-mail us at info@albabymag.com. As always, we’d love to hear from you.
Until next time,
Cecilia “CC” Pearson

child resource
choosing child care— an important decision Provided by Childcare Resources and Children’s Trust Fund parents can make is choosing a child care program. Enrolling your child in a quality program means your child is receiving care from a nurturing, trained child care provider in a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment. Your child’s experience in child care is the foundation for becoming a lifelong learner! ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS
Five Steps to Locating Child Care 1. Start Early! Finding the right child care option for your family can take time. 2. Contact Childcare Resources. Call 205-2521991, ext. 317 to talk with a Resource and Referral Specialist over the phone, call and schedule an appointment to come into the agency or go online at www.ccr-bhm.org for a FREE customized listing of child care options. 3. Visit child care programs and ask questions about:
• Teacher to child ratio—How many children are attended by each teacher? The fewer the number of children per teacher the better attention your child will receive. • Group or classroom size—How many children will be in your child's group? Smaller groups tend to be calmer and safer environments. • Caregiver education and turnover—Ask about
Childcare Resources, a non-profit 501(c)(3) Child Care Resource and Referral Agency based in Birmingham, AL. 205-252-1991 800-822-2734 Toll Free www.ccr-bhm.org

the teachers’ training and education. Do teachers attend classes and workshops? How long have the teachers been teaching in the classroom? Young children do better when they have a knowledgeable consistent teacher for at least a year. • Health and Safety—Is the program licensed or exempt from licensure? Why or why not? What is the discipline policy? Is the environment clean and organized? • Family Involvement—Are parents welcome to participate and share ideas with the program? How will the teacher share information with you about your child’s day? • Accreditation—Nationally accredited programs are measured by standards of quality that have been established by national child care organizations. 4. Make an informed choice. Visit and tour the program. 5. Stay involved! You and your child care provider are partners. Participate in your child’s program regularly. Visit the Childcare Resources’ booth at Babypalooza and receive a free copy of our “Guide to Choosing Child Care”. The guide will help you choose the best child care option for your family and provide you with information about child care licensing in Alabama, Financial Assistance, Quality Indicators and much more.

MY NEWS EXPERIENCE:
TUESDAY’S HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT The largest archive of news available in Alabama. When my daughter needed help with a school assignment on current events, we found the latest local and national news on AL.com. With searchable stories and articles, we found the topic we were looking for. We even found a family-friendly play to see downtown. AL.com is a great place to introduce my daughter to the web, and she’s learning about the world too.

Through partnerships with the community, the Southern Museum of Flight offers a number of exhibitions, displays, and educational services. The Korean War Jets Exhibit is a unique diorama display of the Kimpo Air Force Base in South Korea that highlights the defection of Lt. No Kum Sok (Kenneth Rowe), a 21-year old, elite North Korean Air Force pilot, as well as the historic events that transpired following the defection. The Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit honors Alabama’s famed Tuskegee Airmen featuring a number of World War II era trainers including a North American AT-6 Texan, a Vultee BT-13B Valiant, and a Fairchild PT-19 Cornell. There’s even a Huff-Daland Crop Duster Exhibit, featuring an all-original Huff-Daland “Duster,” a fabric-covered, cantilever-winged biplane structurally designed so that it had none of the wing brace wires that were common to the biplane designs of the era. The display is set in Monroe, Louisiana, during the 1920s when the Delta Air Corporation utilized these Huff-Daland aircraft as crop dusters.

Vulcan Park and Museum
Vulcan Park and Museum There’s more to Vulcan Park than the world’s largest cast iron statue (as if that’s not enough). The museum at the park offers exhibits and interactive displays to teach visitors of all ages not only about the history of the Vulcan statue, but also about life in the Magic City through the decades. Explore how families lived in various eras in Birmingham’s history; how children played and went to school in company towns; what their parents did for work; and how families celebrated the heritage they brought with them from other parts of the world. Examine various chapters in the city’s history, from its founding and early growth in the late 1800s; to the Great
Depression and World War II; postwar Birmingham and the Civil Rights era; the city's transition from an industrial to a technology-based economy; and Birmingham as the hub of an expansive metropolitan area. Other fun activities include taking your picture beside a life-size replica of Vulcan’s giant foot’; climbing the stairs to the top of Vulcan’s 124-foot pedestal (there’s also an elevator for tired parents); and enjoying a picnic lunch while enjoying the panoramic views of Birmingham’s skyline. For views of the city lights at night, the park grounds and observation tower are open every night from 6 to 10 p.m. for a discounted admission fee of $3 plus tax for adults and children ages five and older.
