I imagine you asleep. New to the world, everything fresh as rain. I imagine the sound of your voice, the color of your eyes. I imagine giving birth – the work you and I must do – and it scares and excites me. Like you, I am new to this. So, I will choose a place to deliver you that is prepared for everything I expect, and anything I don’t – a place with a reputation for excellence and knowledge, that sets the standard for how you and I should be cared for. I will choose well, for you are my world. u a b m e d i c i n e . o r g /w o m e n

As we celebrate National Prematurity Month in November the story of one of our favorite cover photographers, Meredith Wilson comes to mind. 2016 was full of surprises for Meredith at age 39 with three boys ages 13,12,10 she found out that she would be expecting boy number 4. Her mother had her sister at age 40, and Meredith said that she would never have a child at 40. Well, surprise. At 30 weeks and six days, Meredith found herself at St. Vincent’s hospital about to give birth. About that day Meredith remembers, “As I went into the labor and delivery hall I glanced at the Bible verse on the wall, ‘For I know well the plan I have in mind for you,’ Jer 29:11. I remember smiling and thinking how true that the Lord was in control of this all and I shouldn’t be afraid. Little did I know hours later Grayson would be born and rushed to the NICU. I’m forever grateful to the amazing NICU staff that treated Grayson and I like family they blessed us beyond words. Grayson spent another six weeks there before going home. As you can see from the cover, now at nine months old Grayson is thriving. #growgraysongrow Until next time,

Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’need for affordable healthcare. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Zoës Kitchen Rolls Out New Kids Meals On an especially hectic day, it’s tempting to turn to fast food rather than take time to cook. But for families with children, a typical kids meal often means the same old: burgers, chicken nuggets, or mac and cheese, with a side of fries.
However, Zoës Kitchen has a different philosophy. Rather than serve up classic kid sta-
ples, the fast-casual Mediterranean restaurant plays off Generation Z’s love of trying new things. The expanded kids menu, which launched at the end of September, was created with a new generation of foodies in mind, focusing on choice, nutrition, and adventure. Check out the array of palate-pleasing kid-friendly dishes: • Salmon or Shrimp Kabobs • Ham and Cheese Piadina made with fresh mozzarella and rosemary ham • Pizza Piadina made with mozzarella, parmesan, and a new Mediterranean tomato sauce • Orzo Pasta Bowl • Healthful side options include hummus, Greek salad, roasted veggies, pesto farro, and fresh fruit.
Kevin Miles, CEO and President at Zoës Kitchen (and father of two daughters born in
Generation Z) says his kids love experiencing new flavors. “They gladly choose kabobs and hummus over fries,” he says. “Ultimately, they crave food that makes them feel good. I’m excited to share our new kids menu with families who also value made-from-scratch, nutritious options.”
Inspired by the Mediterranean diet,
meals feature many healthful ingredients: whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood. They’re predominantly grilled rather than fried, and each entrée is served with a choice of side, which gives pickier kids more control over their meal. You may actually find yourself stealing bites from your child’s plate rather than the other way around!
Zoës Kitchen has more than 190
locations in 20 states across the United States. For more information, visit www. zoeskitchen.com, www.facebook.com/ zoeskitchen, twitter.com/zoeskitchen, or follow #livemediterranean.

YOU HAVE THE NURSERY READY.
a You’ve selected names. The due date is approaching or perhaps you already have your new bundle of joy and you are planning to return to work or begin working. Got child care? When it comes to the issue of child care, there are many sides: parents should remain home and raise their children until school entry; parents should work to afford child care; not my problem – I don’t have children. Whichever position is yours, the children are the ones who stand the most to gain or lose from child care. With that being said, isn’t it reasonable to want all children to have access to quality care rather than substandard care? The recently released The New America Care Report shows that in Alabama the average cost of care is $14,275 for one year for one child. According to VOICES for Alabama’s Children 2015 Kids Count Data Book, the median annual household income in Alabama is $42,882. This means that Alabama families utilizing child care may spend as much as 33 percent of their income on child care alone, which is far higher than the 10 percent which economists recommend. Addressing the connection between quality and affordability is complicated but fortunately in central Alabama, Childcare Resources offers a
solution. Our Supplemental Child Care Program (SCCP) is designed to offset on average 20 to 30 percent of child care costs for eligible working families. Eligibility requirements and an application can be found on our website: http://www.ccr-bhm.org/public/parents/financialassistance/ The benefits of affordable child care include: • Access to quality early learning environments which prepare children to enter school ready to learn and succeed • Success in school which tends to increase attendance and graduation and enables a more productive adulthood • Better students who develop into a better prepared workforce who contribute positively to our economy • A stronger economy and healthier population which create more vibrant and attractive communities. Regardless of your position on child care, it is the duty of all of us to support quality and affordable child care. SCCP is a one-of-a-kind program that exists due to a robust public-private partnership with various funders. To contribute to the mission of Childcare Resources, please click

BEST HOSPITAL NICU UAB RNICU
The Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the UAB Women & Infants Center provides the best possible care for babies born too soon or who are ill. Together with Children’s of Alabama, UAB offers the only Level IV NICU in Alabama— designated by the American Academy of Pediatrics as the highest and most comprehensive level of care available. The Women & Infants Center also is home to a Continuing Care Nursery (CCN), providing extended step-down care for preterm and term babies with
medical conditions. The 120-bed Level IV NICU/ CCN was built around the needs of newborns and their families, and it’s well-equipped to handle any situation that may arise. UAB’s Pediatric Neonatology specialists oversee clinical operations in the NICU and provide comprehensive care for babies using the most comprehensive and up-to-date techniques. Neonatology services closely align with UAB’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine services as necessary to provide a team approach to care when pregnancies are high risk, or become high risk, in order to ensure the best possible outcomes. Should your baby require additional specialty care, you will find comfort in knowing that, as a university medical center, UAB’s Pediatric Department includes top pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, neurologists, nephrologists and all other pediatric specialties who are readily available to provide care. UAB’s NICU and CCN rooms are private, which provides the optimal environment for the important bonding that occurs in the first few days and weeks of life between mother and baby. Sleep space for a family member allows for parents to be right there in the room with their baby. Each baby is closely monitored by nurses who will care for them in their rooms, as well as from observation areas directly outside of each room and via the most advanced wireless fetal monitoring and patient telemetry equipment available. Since everything nurses need is at their fingertips, NICU babies are constantly under nurse supervision, while still allowing for family privacy.
