Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’need for affordable healthcare. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Rita Collins has led an interesting life: She was born on an Air Force Base in Montgomery, lived in several states as well as France, and studied music and ballet. Through these experiences, she gained a love for people, cultures, and numerous forms of artistic expression—an ideal background for a future author.

With an education degree and her love of reading and writing,
she went on to have an illustrious career in education, both as a teacher and principal. During her time as a Reading Recovery Teacher in Birmingham, she loved introducing young children to the exciting world of printed language. She had always considered herself a writer—so after retiring, she founded her company Apples in the Seeds and began creating a series of books for young children to inspire them to learn more about science and the world around them.
She calls them Eensy Weensy stories because they all start with the
animal or plant as an infant, seed, or egg. In 12 lines of print, the story follows the animal or plant to maturity. The Eensy Weensy books are filled with vibrant illustrations created by Michael Allen of Montgomery, a talented illustrator who began drawing as a very young child.
These books, which promote scientific understanding, are engaging
for children. They can even be sung to the tune of your favorite nursery rhyme. Children of all ages can understand, relate and enjoy learning

Since 1990, NCQA has been a driving factor in improving
the health care system, helping to elevate the issue of health care quality to the top of the national agenda. To incorporate the seal into marketing materials, organizations must pass a comprehensive review and annually report on their performance.

Four Indicators of a Quality
Child Care Program DON’T BE IN THE DARK ABOUT CHILD CARE,
a campaign of the Alabama Partnership for Children and VOICES for Alabama’s Children is an effort to inform parents about the difference between licensed and exempt child care and the components of a quality child care program. Alabama is one of only seven states that allows some child care programs to operate legally without
10
ALBabyMag.com
a license, and currently, nearly one-half of all child care centers in Alabama are operating “exempt” from a license and inspection for basic health and safety standards. Don’t Be In The Dark About Child Care encourages families looking for child care to focus on the four indicators of a quality child care program:
1
STAFF
The staff is the foundation of a quality child care program. Quality child care staff have backgrounds in early child care and education or child development that help them understand children’s needs and how they can help them grow and develop. When you pursue child care options, look for staff who enjoy caring for young children and respect the child’s development and learning. This includes staff that: • Nurture, talk and listen to the child • Use a respectful tone of voice and sit or kneel down on the child’s level to interact • Celebrate the child’s new skills • Talk to you on a regular basis about your child’s development and learning
2
ENVIRONMENT
4
A quality child care environment is inviting and warm, as well as safe, organized, and clean. A quality physical environment provides fun, hands-on activities, including: • A play area with age-appropriate toys, books, blocks, and art supplies • Opportunities to play outside • Musical activities where children sing, play instruments, dance, or listen to music • Activities that encourage children to use their five senses • A quality emotional environment is welcoming, and the children’s behavior is guided in a positive way, including: • Staff that praise the children, help one another and work together well • Staff that explain the rules in a simple, positive way • Staff that comfort children and help them express their feelings when they’re upset • No physical punishment is allowed
3
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Developing a good relationship with your child care provider will create a good support system to promote your child’s development and learning. Quality child care programs will have staff members who keep you informed about your child’s day, but you can make sure they maintain quality care for your child by: • Talking to your child care provider. Discuss your concerns and make sure you are happy with their answers. • Talking to your child. Ask them how their day went, what they did, who they saw, and if anything special happened. • Reporting your concerns. Contact DHR if you see anything that may affect a child’s health or safety. For the Child Care Services Division, call (866)528-1694. For Child Protective Services, call (334) 242-9500.
We make quality child care happen! Please visit us online at www.ccr-bhm.org, Facebook page or Twitter.
HEALTH & SAFETY
A quality child care program has standards and policies in place to keep the children and staff healthy & safe. In Alabama, licensed child care programs are inspected annually to ensure that they meet the state’s minimum standards for the health and safety of children in child care. If your child care program is not licensed, find out if it meets the following health and safety standards: • Fire and Health Department Inspections • First Aid & CPR Training • Emergency Procedures • Staff-to-Child Ratios

when children are more likely to swim in the pool, lake or ocean. But can be avoided. The infection is caused by too much moisture in the ear which can allow bacteria or fungi to grow. Swimmer’s ear or otitis externa (outer ear infection) is not to be confused with a regular (middle) ear infection. Dr. Joe Jolly, a pediatrician at Greenvale Pediatrics in Alabaster, explains, “Swimmer’s ear takes place in the outside of the ear in the ear canal itself, whereas an ear infection occurs behind the ear drum.” Dr. Jolly says it’s easy for parents to identify whether their child has swimmer’s ear or an actual ear infection. When a child has
swimmer’s ear, the outside of their ear is a lot more painful, especially when pulled or pressed. SYMPTOMS OF SWIMMER’S EAR
• • • • •
Pain on the outside of the ear Swelling which causes child to feel like ear is “full” Discharge Redness There are ways to prevent swimmer’s ear without having to give up swimming.
PREVENTION OF SWIMMER’S EAR
• Make sure ears are thoroughly dry after swimming. • Consider using over the counter drying drops (though not for children who have ear tubes or a hole in the ear drum). • Dr. Jolly says drying the ears thoroughly is especially important when a child has been swimming in a natural water source such as a lake or river where bacteria are more likely to be found. And as much as parents may be tempted to use cotton swabs to clean a child’s ear, Dr. Jolly says using swabs can do more harm than good. Having wax in the ear offers a natural protective shield to bacteria. If you think your child might have swimmer’s ear, it’s important to see their pediatrician as soon as possible. Swimmer’s ear is very painful and can lead to secondary infections if untreated. TREATMENT FOR SWIMMER’S EAR
• The child’s doctor may prescribe ear drops that contain antibiotics to fight the infection. Sometimes a small cotton wick is inserted into the ear to enable the medicine to target the infection. • The drops are usually given several times a day for seven to 10 days. It’s important to keep water out of your child’s ear during the course of treatment. Swimmer’s ear can put a damper on any child’s summer fun. But with prevention and prompt treatment when identified, they’ll be back in the water in no time. Children’s of Alabama is proud to sponsor Babypalooza and will be there with several different departments to answer your questions. See page 32 for details.

Babywearing Safety Tips
ACCORDING TO BABYWEARING INTERNATIONAL (BWI), a nonprofit organization whose mission is
to promote babywearing as a universally accepted practice, with benefits for both child and caregiver, through education and support, “Babywearing” simply means holding or carrying a baby or young child using a cloth baby carrier. Holding babies is natural and universal; baby carriers make it easier and more comfortable, allowing parents and caregivers to hold or carry their children while attending to the daily tasks of living. Babywearing can be very beneficial but it is also a skill and caution is required for everyone’s safety:
a
BABYWEARING SAFETY & ERGONOMICS
Baby’s legs are spread, supported to the knees, with the hips in a stable position. All baby carriers should support the thighs, keeping baby’s knees above their bottom in an “M” or “froggy” position with the legs gently spread and supported from one knee to the other. This creates a healthy position for hips and spine. Older babies may straddle the wearer; newborns may have legs out in a narrower position or legs inside the carrier (but should be prevented from sitting on their feet). Supported to knee “M” position “Close enough to kiss” Carried at waist Not Recommended Cradle Carry use with caution Upright positioning has many advantages: it prevents positional asphyxiation by keeping baby’s chin off her chest, prevents rebreathing by keeping fabric away from baby’s face, and improves hip health and circulation by separating baby’s legs and preventing baby from sitting on his feet. Cradle carries are often used for breast/bottle feeding. If a cradle carry is used, care must be taken to ensure baby’s Airway safety, body position, and wearer Comfort (ABCs) in the “checkmark” position (5). Baby should be high on the wearer’s body with the face visible, and held close to the wearer’s body,

so wearer and baby move together. This reduces micro-stresses that can make wearing uncomfortable and removes the opportunity for baby to slump and potentially have breathing difficulties. Babies should be worn the way they would be carried in-arms: high on the chest, straddling the hip, or in “piggyback position. CONNECT AND LEARN FROM OTHER BABYWEARERS
Babywearing International offers local chapters. Chapters are divided into regions, each overseen by a Chapter Management Coordinator. Led by at least two Volunteer Babywearing Educators (VBEs), BWI Chapters have regular educational meetings on babywearing topics. Most meetings are free to attend and open to the public. These meetings are a great way to meet other baby wearers, get hands on help and try new carriers.
You can meet with educators from the Birmingham
BWI chapter at Babypalooza in the natural parenting area.

COUPLES TRYING TO CONCEIVE NOW HAVE ACCESS TO TOP INFERTILITY PHYSICIANS
The inability to have a child affects 6.7 million women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The University of Alabama at Birmingham provides women across the state with a more convenient, patient-friendly approach to fertility care with the UAB Fertility Care Network. Patients are now able to receive routine care and testing from their community-based OBGYN, while being followed by UAB’s infertility experts, saving the time and expense of frequent travel

to Birmingham. Participants in the network are Lee Obstetrics and Gynecology in Opelika, Women’s Medical Center in Dothan, OB/GYN Associates of West Alabama in Northport, and Northwest Alabama OB/GYN in Florence. “This network is a win for everyone, especially patients and their referring physicians,” said G. Wright Bates, M.D., director of the UAB Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. “Fertility treatments often require numerous ultrasounds and blood work. This can mean frequent travel to the infertility specialist’s office, often miles away from the patient’s home. Through our network, we are all working together to make it more convenient for patients to receive the expert care necessary to successfully start a family.” Bates says the network plan centered around partnerships with OBGYNs around the state is relatively simple. Patients see a UAB specialist for their initial consultation, testing, diagnosis and treatment plan. Then, the patient’s local OBGYN provides the necessary ultrasounds and labs throughout the course of treatment and sends the results to UAB, where the infertility specialists monitor the patient’s progress, communicating with the patient and her OBGYN about continuing care. In some cases, the patient may return to UAB for infertility procedures such as intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization and follow-up.

“We are excited to be a part of a wonderful team and help provide the kind of treatment our patients want to receive,” said Kerri Hensarling, M.D., obstetrician and gynecologist at Lee OBGYN. “Our goal is to provide attentive, responsive care for the women of Lee County and the surrounding area while striving to put the patient’s health and well-being first and promote women’s health. This network will help tremendously in these endeavors. “Good communication between the patient and her doctor is essential to receiving appropriate care, calming anxieties about the unknown and planning for the future, and this network will enhance these experiences for patients at our center,” said Walter Young, M.D., obstetrician and gynecologist at Women’s Medical Center in Dothan. “We are dedicated to providing women the care and information needed to enjoy good health in every phase of life.” The UAB Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility is an internationally renowned referral center for complex reproductive issues. Post-Pregnancy
Belly Wrapping BY M E G H A N R AT L I F F P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y L A N E B E T H AY
NAVIGATING A NEW POSTPARTUM BODY CAN OFTEN BE DIFFICULT FOR A NEW MOM. The “mummy-tummy” as
it is often referred to, is not just an appearance issue. This stomach bulge is often the result of a separation of the stomach muscles known as diastasis recti.
Wrapping refers to using a long piece of fabric or wrap to support your core, while splinting offers the benefits of binding in a premade fitted option. In general, splints are medical-grade support tools. There are many different types of splints on the market, so you’ll need to look carefully at sizing and usage guidelines to find your fit.
YOUR CHANGING BODY
For nine months, your body makes changes to accommodate the human you are growing. During pregnancy, your body releases different hormones—such as relaxin—that help your ligaments and muscles soften in preparation for childbirth. Your abdominal muscles are joined by a connective tissue that runs vertically from the sternum to the pubic bone. This tissue stretches and weakens as your uterus grows. While all new moms may not suffer from diastasis recti, every postpartum mother will experience some stretching and expanding in their abdomen. WHAT IS BELLY BINDING?
Belly binding is a technique used to help facilitate healing after childbirth. Just as it sounds, the practice refers to wrapping or splinting your abdomen.

THE BENEFITS OF BELLY BINDING
Belly binding is a centuries-old tradition that spans many cultures. It not only helps retrain core muscles, but it also helps correct your posture while you carry or breastfeed your newborn. Binding can help the uterus shrink and the compression from the wrap aids in flushing out postpartum bleeding. Belly binding has also been linked to dissuading the “baby blues.” You can start binding your core immediately after a vaginal birth and 7 to 10 days after a cesarean. As you should with any part of your recovery, always consult your doctor or healthcare specialist. It is important that you give your body the same time and space to recover as it took to grow your baby. While some women do report that wrapping helps return them to their pre-pregnan-
cy body quicker this is not the goal of belly binding. During this important time of your postpartum recovery, the focus should be on your health and well-being of your precious newborn. Let your body heal properly and you will feel and see the benefits.

TRADITIONAL BELLY WRAPPING
Bengkung belly binding is an ancient Malaysian style of wrapping the abdomen. A piece of fabric, around 3 yards long and about 6 to 7 inches wide, is used to bind the core. 1. Begin by taking a deep breath and imagine you are pulling your navel to touch your spine. Hold your wrap in each hand behind your hips. In one hand the excess cloth will be much shorter than the other. This shorter cloth is around 3 to 4 feet and is called the “tail. 2. Wrap the two ends tightly around your hips and tie a double knot at the base of your uterus, pulling the tail vertically. You will keep the tail vertical and continue to wrap the longer piece tightly around your body and tie it in the front. 3. You will continue this wrapping and tying method until just under the breasts. The wrap should be very tight but not cutting off circulation. You would traditionally wear the wrap all day for the 40 days of postpartum confinement practiced by women in Malaysia. Most postpartum doulas can assist in Bengkung belly binding, and you may also find tutorial videos online. In Alabama, you can contact April at www.branch-

Midwifery
Comes to Birmingham Expectant parents get a new delivery options as Simon-Williamson Clinic welcomes a certified nurse midwife to the OB/GYN practice.
BIG NEWS FOR PARENTS-TO-BE: Birmingham is now home to a practicing certified nurse midwife
(CNM). Sheila Lopez, CNM, has joined the OB/GYN department at Simon-Williamson Clinic (SWC). Alongside Dr. Emily Bell and Dr. Jesanna Cooper, Lopez will offer prenatal care, low-risk vaginal deliveries, postpartum care, and well-woman exams. Although Montgomery and Anniston both have practicing CNMs, SWC is currently the only Birmingham medical group offering full-scope midwifery care, including deliveries. “Being the only [Birmingham] CNM with full-scope hospital privileges is a huge honor but also a big responsibility

that I take very seriously,” Lopez says. “First and foremost, I want to give excellent evidence-based and respectful care to families and also represent my profession well.” Dr. Cooper says the news has garnered a positive reaction from patients and the community. “I believe that collaboration between physicians and midwives provides the most comprehensive and highest quality care for women,” Dr. Cooper says. “It has always been a goal of mine to practice in a collaborative setting.” Dr. Cooper, who worked with a CNM group during her residency, notes that Lopez’s arrival will provide expectant mothers the best of both worlds. “SWC patients now have access to the midwifery model of care and the midwifery body of knowledge with regards to physiologic birth and well-woman care,” she says, “in addition to board certified physicians providing backup and medical interventions.” When it comes to a mother’s desired birth experience, Lopez considers herself “a guide.” “I offer my experience and knowledge when needed for the mother to make informed, individualized choices,” Lopez says. “So epidural, IV pain medication, unmedicated, induction, Pitocin, intermittent fetal monitoring, mobility, etc.— those are all situations where there are discussions between myself and the mother and family, and the decision lies with her and them.” Laboring mothers often turn to birth comfort tools to ease the pain, whether birthing balls to gently bounce on, a sock filled with warm rice to ease aches, and soothing music. Lopez says her favorite labor tool is “the hands-on support of a doula, as well as education and information sharing so the woman can labor as free of anxiety of possible.” SWC staff are happy to bring more birth options to the area. “ I am very proud and excited that SWC has taken the lead in bringing this service to Birmingham women,” Dr. Cooper says. “The midwifery model of care and midwifery services are the basis of maternity care in most other developed nations, and it will likely continue to grow in the U.S. as we focus on achieving quality measures and lowering overall cost of care.”

WANT TO TAKE THE FAMILY ON A BIBLICAL HISTORY JOURNEY WHILE STAYING STATESIDE? WELL, PACK YOUR BAGS FOR THE ARK ENCOUNTER IN WILLIAMSTOWN, KY, WHERE A FULL-SCALE RENDITION OF NOAH’S ARK RECENTLY OPENED.
This Ark replica is seven stories high and the length of a football field and a half. Located between Cincinnati, OH and Lexington, KY off I-75, The Ark is in a wide-open, peaceful space free of towering skyscrapers and the rush of city life. It was designed to help families relax and reconnect, while also experiencing the pages of the Bible like never before.

“We want to sweep guests away from the hustle and bustle of modern life and bring them to a large hill where the Ark dominates the landscape,’’ said Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis, which built the Ark Encounter. The Ark Encounter is owned and operated by Answers in Genesis, also known as AiG. The park’s first phase cost about $100 million. So what can families expect from the Ark Encounter? Plenty. • Built according to the dimensions given in the Bible, the Ark Encounter is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high. It has 125,000 square feet. • Figures, clothed in ancient style, represent Noah and his family. Pottery, tools, and other items are displayed to resemble what the family might have had on the Ark. • Lighting in the Ark is designed to resemble oil-burning lamps or torches. • Sculpture displays of animals mentioned in the Ark story from the Bible.

• Zip lines that are 17 stories in the air. Ten “super’’ zip lines are 1,000 feet or longer. (More lines are expected to be added over the coming months, pushing the Ark Encounter’s zip line course to be known as the largest in the Midwest. One line will run more than 2,000 feet as it stretches from near the Ark to the parking lot.) • A two-story, 1,500-seat casual restaurant full of favorite foods, specialty sides, and diet-friendly dishes • Dozens of world-class exhibits on the biblical story of Noah, the Ark, the animals and the flood • Three bird sanctuaries and a butterfly exhibit • Live animal shows • A 500-seat, 5-D special effects theater The project, which has been years in the making, was developed out of a desire to have millions across America and the world share in the gospel of Jesus Christ, according to the website. Now that opening day is just around the corner, organizers are ready for the world to join them on an unforgettable journey to the past. Tickets are $40 for adults, $28 for children and $31 for seniors. Children five and under are free. Parking is $10. Because interest is expected to be high for the first 40 days, the park will have the following hours from July 7 - Aug. 15: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for daytime admission and five p.m. to midnight for evening admission. After August 15, the standard park hours will be Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 12 to 6 p.m. The park will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, according to the website. To get to the Ark Encounter, visitors will park in a spacious, nearby parking lot, board themed buses and ride through a forested valley before coming into perfect view of a lake and the theme park. The Ark replica is the largest timber-frame structure in America, according to the website. But don’t just think the Ark Encounter is all the area has to offer. Next to theme park is the Ararat Ridge Zoo, which will feature zebras, llamas, alpacas, camels, Mediterranean donkeys, emus, yaks, sheep, and kangaroos. Camel and donkey rides will also be available. There will also be a petting zoo.
