RESOURCES , RESOURCES, RESOURCES

This issue of Alabama Baby & Child magazine serves as a handy reference guide to pediatric resources in your community. In each issue, we feature a different resource directory so you may save them and have a volume of information at your fingertips. All of the listings for the guides are also just a quick click away on your smart devices by downloading our APP or visiting FamilyPhonePages.com. Even more exciting is that the providers in these guides come out to meet you and share information with you at the BABYPALOOZA Baby & Maternity expo. If you’ve never heard of Babypalooza, it’s a free baby and maternity expo and mini parenting conference. Check page 37 for 2016 Alabama tour dates and make sure to mark your calendars. We look forward to serving you this year!

Fast Not Furious Autobahn Indoor Speedway BY K I M H I L D E N B R A N D

Host a birthday party for the child with a need for speed. Birmingham’s newest attraction the Autobahn Indoor Speedway is a European-style indoor go-kart facility. The speedway is a great party venue for racers that are at least eight years old and 48 inches tall. They offer multiple party packages featuring reserved time slots, private races for guests, and extras such as trophies and photos. Chances are, the Autobahn gokarts are different from any you or your child may have experienced in the past. These high-performance electric go karts are the fastest in the industry. Junior karts reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. According to staff at the Autobahn, even with the speed the carts are reliable and easy to handle for even a novice driver. Safety is the top priority: The Speedway’s timing system enables them to regulate speed for novice groups, plus every car is equipped with full radio control. All party packages feature a grand finale race, reserved time in the party room, and extras detailed below. All the gear is provided, including a helmet and head sock. Each party guest undergoes

a safety session to learn about the rules, the flags, and kart operation. At 53,000 square feet, the Indoor Speedway is the largest all-indoor go-kart facility in Alabama—and all indoors means bad weather is not an issue. For any aspiring racer, this party venue promises to be a win-win.

Children’s CHILDREN’S OF ALABAMA has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children across the state and throughout the southeastern U.S. since 1911. For the past four years, Children’s has been ranked among the best children’s hospital programs in the nation by US News & World Report. Last year, patients made more than 670,000 outpatient and nearly 14,000 inpatient visits to Children’s from every county in Alabama and from 41 other states and four foreign countries. With more than 2 million square feet, it is the third largest pediatric medical facility in the U.S. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services across its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional outpatient services provided at Children’s South and Children’s on 3rd. Primary care is provided at more than a dozen medical offices in communities across central Alabama. Children’s of Alabama is the only medical center in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the primary site of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, research and residency programs. Sherri Burgess endured a loss no one ever should. But as she details in her new book, she found answers—and solace—in her faith. BY K I M H I L D E N B R A N D P H OTO G R A P H Y BY H E AT H E R D U R H A M

FOR SHERRI AND RICK BURGESS, their youngest child Bronner, age two-and-a-half, lit up every day. “He was like a cookie right out of the oven, and every morning was like Christmas morning with him,” Sherri recalls. “I couldn’t wait to unwrap each day with him.” Sherri (a news anchor turned author) and Rick (host of the nationally syndicated “The Rick and Bubba Show”) savored every day with their children. When Bronner tragically drowned in the family’s pool in 2008, it would have been easy to fall apart— but they didn’t. Though it is difficult to imagine bereaved parents having such strong faith in the face of tragedy, faith is exactly what held together the Burgess family. In fact, Sherri had a calling to share her journey: This calling sparked a five-year writing process, culminating the

publication of her new book: Bronner: A Journey to Understand. “I wanted to write the answers I was hearing from God: what I found about pain and suffering in the Bible and all the lessons learned along the way,” Sherri says. “...But this isn’t a book about grief or the grieving process. In truth, it’s really not even about Bronner. It’s about God.” As for Sherri personally, Bronner’s death taught her so much about faith. “[Bronner] was sunshine and a cool breeze kissing my face with life, and when I lost him I was utterly crushed and completely devastated,” she says. “But God picked me up and gave me peace through understanding and hope for the things of the Spirit—things such as eternity, Heaven, God Himself and ultimately a greater understanding of who God is and why He allows such great suffering in the world.” Sherri hopes her powerful book will inspire those who read it. What does she hope people take away from the Burgess family’s story? “I’m asking you to believe in Him,” she says. “That is Bronner’s legacy: faith that has been tested and has proven itself genuine. In the sight of God, that is very, very precious.” Sherri Burgess has shared an excerpt of Bronner: A Journey to Understand below. The book was released in January and is available from Amazon, Books-a-Million, and Christian bookstores across the nation.

I wanted to introduce you to my sweet Bronner. He was only two and a half when he went to heaven. I never say “died” because I don’t feel that he has. I truly see him as going on to another place. Bronner didn’t cease to exist. He has been transported to another land, distant and mysterious in that I have never been there before, nor

THE AMELIA CENTER, a Children’s of Alabama

resource for grieving parents, children, and families, opened its doors in 1997. The Amelia Center was the first pediatric grief counseling center in Alabama and is the only exclusively grief counseling center for both children and parents. The center serves about 1,100 new individuals, or about 350 families, every year, along with those making recurring visits. The center was founded on the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. However, often our society fails to understand or support the needs of a child and a family in grief. The center’s central tenets include: • Grief is a natural reaction to the loss of a loved one for children as well as adults. • Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal oneself. • The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual. • Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process.

In addition to counseling that incorporates play and crafts for grieving young children, the center offers individual and group counseling for teens and young adults through age 21 and support for parents whose children have died. Although most work is done at the center, the staff trains caregivers, health care professionals, school counselors, teachers, clergy, and others in grief counseling and crisis intervention. Counseling services are available at no set fee. As a department of Children’s of Alabama, the Amelia Center is funded through client and community support and by the United Way of Central Alabama.

Donald House

Charities

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES of Alabama opened in 1979 with

eight bedrooms to serve families of children with cancer from Children’s of Alabama. In 1991, the mission of the House expanded to welcome all families of children receiving medical care. This home away from home allows families to stay close to a sick or injured child without having to sleep in hospital waiting rooms, or bear the often, unaffordable expense of a hotel room. In 2007, RMHCA opened the new and current house with 41 bedrooms. Like the original, it opened without any debt, meaning all money goes toward keeping families close. The house is within walking distance of both UAB and Children’s of Alabama. Since opening in 1979, the Birmingham House has welcomed an estimated 38,000 families. It is Birmingham’s only low-cost facility for families of children needing medical treatment. Families at the Ronald McDonald House enjoy a private bedroom and bath, access to cooking, laundry, internet and recreational facilities. Volunteers often visit to cook dinner for the families and offer comfort and support. In addition to the House in Birmingham, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama provides a comfortable, relaxing place to rest and regroup while only steps away from a sick child’s bedside at our Ronald McDonald Family Room at DCH Regional Hospital in Tuscaloosa. The Family Room opened in 2011 and was the first of its kind to open in the state of Alabama. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile opened its first family facility in February 2000 with the ability to accommodate 12 families. With an expansion in May of 2011, the House can now host up to 38 families of hospitalized children. They also have Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located inside USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital to provide places of peaceful respite – just steps away from the child’s bedside.

HOW YOU CAN HELP 1. The family meals program is one of the most appreciated by guests. Community groups or individuals provide dinners for the families who are staying at the House so that they have one less thing to worry about after a long day at their child’s bedside. 2. Provide items on the wish list. There is a constant need for staples such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, paper plates and napkins and toiletries. Anything you have to buy for your house, we have to buy here in bulk. 3. The pop tab program takes something that would otherwise be thrown out and trades it for cash to keep the lights on and the telephones connected. 4. Volunteers can work shifts during the week or come on a weekend and help

clean the house.

5. Other ideas – Community groups have given gift baskets, held fundraisers, baked cookies and given their time to special events all to benefit the house.
