Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’need for affordable healthcare. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Asthma To sign up for the Partners in Kids Health Newsletter and for more information on this or other health and safety topics, visit www.childrensal.org.

Parners in

COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES LIKE ASTHMA ARE THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY PATIENTS COME TO

• coughing which is often worse at night • chest tightness • wheezing • coughing or difficulty breathing with exercise

CHILDREN’S OF ALABAMA. ASTHMA IS AN INFLAMMATORY LUNG DISEASE THAT IS VERY COMMON IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS.

THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF ASTHMA: PERSISTENT AND INTERMITTENT.

HAVING ASTHMA CAUSES:

• airway muscles to tighten • inflammation to increase • swelling in the airways • mucus to build up Airways become swollen, tight and narrow making it hard to breathe. 12

ALBabyMag.com

In persistent asthma, children have more frequent symptoms and flare-ups. This is caused by increased airway inflammation, swelling and narrowing that is present every day. Children with intermittent asthma have few symptoms because they only have rare times of airway swelling and narrowing.

Janet Johnston, CRNP, is a nurse practitioner and asthma educator at Children’s of Alabama. She said even though there’s no cure for asthma, in most cases families can learn how to make sure their child’s asthma is well controlled. One of the most important ways to do that is to know the triggers of asthma. COMMON TRIGGERS ARE:

• respiratory infection • allergies • irritants such as smoke • exercise Oftentimes, just avoiding the triggers can help reduce the occurrence of symptoms. The exception is exercise. “One trigger you don’t want to avoid is exercise,” she said. “If the child’s asthma is well controlled, they shouldn’t have to avoid exercise.” Johnston said another concern is making sure the child gets the full dose of medicine through an inhaler alone. She recommends always using a spacer with the inhaler. “Using a spacer ensures the proper dose of medicine is going deeply in the child’s lungs,” she said. “It’s important to get the full dose of medicine. Otherwise, it’s like pouring half of it on the floor.” Johnston encourages families to have an action plan to help keep their child’s asthma well controlled. THE PLAN SHOULD INCLUDE:

• • • • •

seeing the child’s health care provider regularly for asthma having clear instructions about using the inhaler and any other medicine know what to do when symptoms increase know when to call the doctor know when to seek care

WELL-CONTROLLED ASTHMA MEANS A CHILD IS:

• symptom-free most of the time and not needing frequent quick relief medicine • able to play and exercise like other children • sleeping through the night • not missing school or work due to frequent asthma fare ups More information about managing asthma is available at www.childrensal.org/asthma.

Five Things You Need Know about

Natural Parenting

Breastfeeding

BY G L E N N I L O R I C K , I B C L C

YOU HEAR IT EVERYWHERE: BREAST IS BEST. BUT THEN YOUR FRIEND TELLS YOU SHE JUST COULDN’T MAKE ENOUGH MILK.

And your sister-in-law says that her nipples bled. So you begin to wonder if you can make it work. The fact is that 95% of mothers can produce all the milk their babies need if they just get off to the right start. What is the right start? I’m glad you asked. These five steps will help to insure that you and baby have as much success as possible breastfeeding.

ALBabyMag.com 15

Natural Parenting The La Leche League classic resource on breastfeeding is called The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding for a reason: it is a learned process that requires practice to perfect.

1

BREASTFEEDING IS AN ART THAT YOU MUST LEARN

The La Leche League classic resource on breastfeeding is called The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding for a reason: it is a learned process that requires practice to perfect. Just as you would take a drawing class if you wanted to become a good artist, you owe it to yourself and your newborn to take a breastfeeding class before delivery. Not only will you learn the basic mechanics of breastfeeding, but you will also learn how to avoid

pitfalls. Once your baby is here, get help in the hospital from your nurses and lactation consultants.

2

16

ALBabyMag.com

KEEP BABY SKIN-TO-SKIN UNTIL AFTER THE FIRST FEED

As long as both you and baby are healthy, the best place for baby as soon as he is dried off is right on your chest. Skin-to-skin contact helps regulate baby’s blood sugar, breathing, heart rate and body temperature. Your child will be in a quiet-alert state after birth, and

within the first 90 minutes of so will be ready for his first feed. He may latch on by himself, or you might have to help him a little bit.

3

NURSE AT LEAST 8-12 TIMES A DAY

The more frequently you nurse in the first 96 hours, the more quickly your milk will come in, and the more milk your body will make. Your newborn’s tummy is tiny, so the colostrums he gets in those early feed will be just the right amount to fill him up. Every time he starts to wake up, put him to the breast!

4

POSITION AND LATCH ARE CRITICAL

Pull your infant in tight with his head in line with his body. She should latch on with a wide open mouth with her chin low on the areola. Your nipple shouldn’t look flattened or ridged when he’s done nursing.

5

GET HELP IF IT HURTS

If you are in pain or your nipples are bleeding, something is wrong! Call a lactation consultant immediately. The sooner you correct it, the better your long-term outcome will be.

Consignment Sale Tips

s

If you’re a new mom like me, you’ve probably never been to a consignment sale for kids. And since I didn’t know where to start, I turned to my Instagram friends for tips on how I could prepare and what to do. Here’s what I learned. BY H E AT H E R B R OW N

1. SHOP SOLO AND SHOP SMALL

We’ve all heard stories about warehouses, massive church sales, and taking hours to sort through items, which all sounds VERY overwhelming, especially with baby along for the ride. Choose a smaller sale to start with and if possible shop without children. 2. BRING SOMETHING TO CARRY YOUR HAUL IN

Very often the sales don’t provide large bags. Taking your own large bag, suitcase, or backpack will allow you to gather more quickly.

18

ALBabyMag.com

3. PREPLAN AND TAKE A SHOPPING LIST

5. CHECK FOR RIPS AND STAINS

This advice was essential for me. I was able to go into the sale knowing exactly what I needed and all the other items there didn’t distract me. It was also helpful for me to write down the sizes I wanted, as well as what season my son, would need for those ages. For example, when he’s nine months, he’ll need short-sleeved, collared shirts and a bathing suit for the spring and summer.

When I get in a hurry, I tend to overlook things like this, so I’m glad someone reminded me of this before I went.

Tip: For shoes trace your child’s foot and a pair of his current shoes and use that for checking shoe sizes if you are going without your children. All sales are final at consignment sales. 4. BRING A TAPE MEASURE

If you are planning to buy furniture measure the space where you plan to put the furniture first. Bring a tape measure to the sale to make sure what you purchase will be a perfect fit

6. VOLUNTEER SO YOU CAN SHOP FIRST

If you volunteer to work a sale, you typically get to shop a day before the public sale, so you get first pick. If you can’t do that, consider shopping on the last day so you can get everything 50% off.

Montessori EDUCATION IN ALABAMA

24

w

w BY KI M H I L D E N B R A N D

WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CHILDREN’S HEALTH,

HAPPINESS, AND WELL-BEING, YOU HAVE SO MANY DECISIONS TO MAKE. In the early years, arguably

one of the most important choices is where they’ll attend school. Alabama has no shortage of education options, from numerous public schools to various private institution—and one option many parents choose is a Montessori school. Alabama is home to 17 Montessori schools, with programs ranging from preschool to high school. The philosophy is based on the teachings of Maria Montessori: an Italian medical doctor who was an expert in children’s development. Founded in 1907, the Montessori method is based on the belief that children are born with the need to discover, explore,

and learn. Every child learns and progresses at his or her own pace in the learning styles that work best. While schools generally follow similar structure, guidelines, and principles, each one is unique. The Montessori approach is not franchised or licensed, so you’ll notice differences among schools. However, at the heart of most Montessori schools is a supportive classroom environment where students learn to love learning, cultivate positive self-esteem, and engage in true understanding of core skills. Students are encouraged to be self sufficient, yet they are supported through challenging experiences. Schools are tuition-based, but in some cases, scholarships or loans are available. Your best option when considering a Montessori school is to do your research, talk to the school, and visit so you can see which will best suit your child.

BY K I M H I L D E N B R A N D

IN OCTOBER OF 2015 TRINITY MEDICAL CENTER OFFICIALLY CLOSED, AND GRANDVIEW MEDICAL CENTER OPENED.

Plans for the cutting-edge digital hospital, conveniently located on Hwy 280, began in 2001. Fourteen years later, the 372-bed hospital is making good on its promises to delivery high-tech service, such as wearable monitoring systems and smart boards to access medical information. For expectant patients all of this means a new option for labor and delivery. “We’re very excited about our women’s services program,” says Megan Freeman, Administrator of Women’s Services at Grandview. The Birthing Center features eight private labor and delivery rooms, four private triage rooms, two OB emergency suites, 22 postpartum rooms, two private breastfeeding support rooms, and a dedicated family waiting room just for Women’s Services. Should an emergency arise, the staff at Grandview is prepared. “We’re very proud

Neonatal nurse practitioners are on duty around the clock, and the NICU transition program allows for a NICU-educated nurse to be available for newborn transition after delivery. Grandview’s fetal monitoring system is another safety enhancement. Providers can access both documentation and fetal monitoring from outside the hospital to collaborate on patient care around the clock. This allows providers to spend additional time with patients at the office while still actively participating in care and interventions for patients who are at the hospital. Grandview’s Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides personalized care for neonates and infants up to two months of age. The NICU has 12 private suites with overnight stay accommodations, and the neonatal intensive care nurses are trained to stabilize critically ill newborns within other community hospitals and transport them to Grandview Medical Center for continued care and treatment.

The focus on family-friendly care and a positive experience for moms and babies has drawn praise from patients. Families appreciate the spacious rooms and the warm and inviting atmosphere (right down to heated toilet seats!). Medical professionals care for baby at mom’s bedside to promote bonding and minimize separation. For moms who undergo Caesarean sections, every effort is made to make the experience as positive as possible. Family-friendly surgical drapes allow mom to see her baby enter the world, and doctors strive for moms and babies to have skin-to-skin contact immediately. “Moms carry their babies for nine months and can’t wait to meet them,” Freeman says, “and we want mom and baby to be together as much as possible.”

Meet

MY JOURNEY INTO MOTHERHOOD CHANGED SO MUCH ABOUT ME. AFTER THE BIRTH OF MY FIRST DAUGHTER, I WAS SHELL-SHOCKED.

This child that my husband and I had prayed for, planned for, and spent over nine months dreaming about was rocking my world. I struggled, cried and looked around for someone who would understand. I wanted to hear, “Me too, Momma. Me too.” I had no idea of what I was doing. I longed for someone who was trained with knowledge and understanding to help me ease into this new world of

motherhood. After the first year of my baby’s life, I decided that I would be that someone for other mothers. Before I started, I had never heard of a postpartum doula. I knew all about birth doulas — I’ve had one at all three of my births. When a birth doula told me about a training program to become a postpartum doula, I knew that I’d found my calling. Momma Love Postpartum Services was birthed. It is my heart’s desire to change the way our society looks at this time known as “the 4th trimester,” which refers to the first three months after the baby is born. I believe it should not be viewed as a race to see how quickly you can return to your pre-baby jeans, but a time of self-reflection and care. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Alabama Baby & Child blogger network and to share a little love with each and every one of you.
