from the editor FAMILY PHONE PAGES is our annual resource guide to the information we think parents of young

children reference most often. Unless we wanted to publish a magazine the size of an actual phone book it would be hard to have comprehensive listings of each category so these are just a few of the highlights. You may find more listings on www.familyphonepages.com. If you know of a listing that we should include or see one that needs to be updated please email us at guide@albabymag.com January kicks off the first show of the 2015 BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama BABYPALOOZA BABY & MATERNITY Experience Tour. If you are new, expectant, or hopeful parent please plan to attend one of the locations across the state. The tour kicks of in Tuscaloosa on January 24th and continues through the fall. You can get the complete schedule at www.babypaloozatour. We look forward to another year of visiting with you and sharing your stories.

Until next time,

choosing a pediatrician Commonsense tips for finding a doctor that’s a perfect fit for you and your baby

PREGNANCY is a magical time. You

spend hours decorating the nursery, planning the baby shower, and selecting the perfect homecoming outfit for your newborn. But many parents don't take advantage of this prenatal period to seek out one of the most important people in your baby's life-their pediatrician. You’ll be seeing a lot of your baby's doctor in those first couple of years, and it certainly helps to get to know him or her before your new bundle of joy arrives. A pediatrician acts as your partner in ensuring your child is as healthy as possible-not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and even spiritually. So, taking an afternoon before your baby is born to visit their office, meet them, and get an idea of how things are run at the practice will help tremendously when your baby runs that first, midnight

Association of the State of Alabama’s website (www.masalink.org). But the best way to find a top-notch pediatrician in your area is to ask other parents. Ask at your church, at your local school, or at the office. Talk to parents about their experiences with their pediatrician and about any frustrations they might have. Go visit. Set up an interview with any prospective doctors. “We do Expectant Parent Visits,” says Dr. Mark Lytle, a pediatrician with Pediatrics East in the Trussville/Clay area of Birmingham. “It gives [parents] a good opportunity to ask questions and get to know my temperament, and for me to get to know them.” Talk to a few pediatricians to compare personalities and practices. Be prepared. During your visit, be ready with a list of questions. “Ask them about their background,” advises Dr.

The following tips will give you a leg up on finding a qualified pediatrician in your area, questions to ask, and things to look for at your pre-baby visit. Ask around. Lytle. "Find out if they have a specialty or special area of interest in pediatrics. And one important question is if they are certified through the American Board of Pediatrics. I've even had people ask about my family and my beliefs. Whatever is important to you is certainly OK to ask." Other good questions:

“Watch how long it takes patients to be seen. Observe how the office staff deals with parents. Strike up a conversation with a parent and get their take on the practice.” What are your office hours? How do you handle appointments? What do you do if my child is sick after hours? How do you handle emergencies? What hospital do you admit to? How do you handle billing? How are insurance claims handled? If I call with a question, will the doctor return my call or a nurse? What’s your vaccination schedule? Do I have to wait long to see a doctor? This is also a good time to bring up any special areas of concern you may have, like any hereditary problems that could be an issue with your new baby. Loiter a bit. If you have time, take a few extra minutes to sit in the waiting room. Check out the decor and layout of the office. Is it kid-friendly? Does the office have separate sick and well waiting rooms? Watch how long it takes patients to be seen. Observe how the office staff deals with parents. Strike up a conversation with a parent and get their take on the practice. Even if your child is healthy, you’ll still be spending a lot of time in the office and you want to be sure it's a space that is as welcoming and comfortable as possible.

SIMPLY MONITOR YOUR CHILD AT HOME Children whose temperatures are lower than 102°F (38.9°C) often don’t require medication unless they’re uncomfortable. There’s one important exception to this rule: If you have an infant 3 months or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, call your doctor or go to the emergency department immediately. Even a slight fever can be a sign of a potentially serious infection in young infants, Baker said or some other attribution needed. The illness is probably not serious if your child: r JT TUJMM JOUFSFTUFE JO QMBZJOH r JT FBUJOH BOE ESJOLJOH XFMM r JT BMFSU BOE TNJMJOH BU ZPV r IBT B OPSNBM TLJO DPMPS r MPPLT XFMM XIFO IJT PS IFS UFNQFSBUVSF

comes down And don’t worry too much about a child with a fever who doesn’t want to eat. This is common with infections that cause fever. For children who still drink and urinate normally, not eating as much as usual is okay.

CONTACT YOUR PHYSICIAN OR VISIT AND EMERGENCY ROOM In the past, doctors advised treating a fever on the basis of temperature alone. But now they recommend considering both the temperature and a child’s overall condition. If your child is between 3 months and 3 years old and has a fever of 102.2°F (39°C) or higher, call your doctor to see if he or she needs to see your child. For older children, take behavior and activity level into account. Watching how your child behaves will give you a pretty good idea of whether

a minor illness is the cause or if your child should be seen by a doctor, says Baker. Sometimes children with fever breathe faster and may have a higher heart rate. You should call the doctor if your child is having difficulty breathing, is breathing faster than normal, or continues to breathe fast after the fever comes down. The exact temperature that should trigger a call to the doctor depends on the age of the child, the illness, and whether there are other symptoms with the fever. Amenities include a dedicated maternity entrance with emergency labor parking; a spacious family waiting room with children’s play area, located on the first floor; an infant security system with limited access to the area; a mother/baby gift shop; and a gourmet coffee and deli kiosk offering Seattle’s Best coffee and specialty sandwiches and salads. UAB’s nursing care was recognized as a Magnet hospital for the third time in 2011 by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, was named the “Best Hospital NICU in Birmingham” by Alabama Baby magazine for the fourth year in a row in 2014, and won the 2013 Women’s Choice Award for America’s Best Hospitals Obstetrics for the second year in a row. UAB Hospital is the only hospital in Central and North Alabama to participate in Best Fed Beginnings. Also, together with Children’s Hospital of Alabama, UAB’s Regional NICU is Alabama’s only Level IV Unit, and the connecting sky bridge between the two entities provides a seamless transition for babies who require advanced inpatient care at both locations.
