choosing child care— an important decision Provided by Childcare Resources and Children’s Trust Fund parents can make is choosing a child care program. Enrolling your child in a quality program means your child is receiving care from a nurturing, trained child care provider in a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment. Your child’s experience in child care is the foundation for becoming a lifelong learner! ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS

Five Steps to Locating Child Care 1. Start Early! Finding the right child care option for your family can take time. 2. Contact Childcare Resources. Call 205-2521991, ext. 317 to talk with a Resource and Referral Specialist over the phone, call and schedule an appointment to come into the agency or go online at www.ccr-bhm.org for a FREE customized listing of child care options. 3. Visit child care programs and ask questions about:

• Teacher to child ratio—How many children are attended by each teacher? The fewer the number of children per teacher the better attention your child will receive. • Group or classroom size—How many children will be in your child's group? Smaller groups tend to be calmer and safer environments. • Caregiver education and turnover—Ask about

the teachers’ training and education. Do teachers attend classes and workshops? How long have the teachers been teaching in the classroom? Young children do better when they have a knowledgeable consistent teacher for at least a year. • Health and Safety—Is the program licensed or exempt from licensure? Why or why not? What is the discipline policy? Is the environment clean and organized? • Family Involvement—Are parents welcome to participate and share ideas with the program? How will the teacher share information with you about your child’s day? • Accreditation—Nationally accredited programs are measured by standards of quality that have been established by national child care organizations. 4. Make an informed choice. Visit and tour the program. 5. Stay involved! You and your child care provider are partners. Participate in your child’s program regularly. Visit the Childcare Resources’ booth at Babypalooza and receive a free copy of our “Guide to Choosing Child Care”. The guide will help you choose the best child care option for your family and provide you with information about child care licensing in Alabama, Financial Assistance, Quality Indicators and much more.

Children’s of Alabama New Hospital Dedication

The Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children (BRHFC) was dedicated June 5,2012 during a special event held in front of the 12-story, 750,000-square-foot building. The dedication marked the completion of construction on the $400 million expansion at Children’s of Alabama, the state’s only freestanding pediatric hospital. Governor Robert Bentley and Birmingham Mayor William Bell joined Children’s CEO and President Mike Warren, hospital leadership and staff as children who have received care at Children’s presented the keys to the building to Dr. Sergio Stagno, Physician-in-Chief; Dr. Jerry Oakes, Surgeon-in-Chief and Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery; and Chief Nursing Executive Deb Wesley. Located one block north of the existing facility, the hospital is licensed for 332 beds plus 48 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) bassinets. It is the largest medical facility expansion project in the history of Alabama and will make Children’s the third largest pediatric hospital in the United States. The building is also the largest building project in state history to gain certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and will be the first LEED-certified hospital in Alabama. The BRHFC will welcome patients beginning August 4.

Storkland Baby Furniture 1074 Montgomery Highway Vestavia Hills (205) 824-1725 Outlet 2205 2nd Avenue North Birmingham (205) 324-9509 storklandbaby.com

SINCE 1995, Storkland Furniture has been

helping Birmingham families prepare for their newest members by selling quality baby furnishings and accessories. Today, Storkland is owned and managed by Stan Blair and has two locations, in downtown Birmingham and Vestavia Hills, but its origins begin with Blair Furniture. Stan’s parents George and Ludie Blair opened Blair Furniture in downtown Birmingham in its Second Avenue South location in 1947, an area that has seen a renaissance in the last few years with the opening of a slew of popular new bars and restaurants. “My dad loved his family, faith and the furniture business,” says Stan. “He worked six days a week for over 64 years. He had a passion for helping people and making sure everyone was well taken care of at his store. He was driving up to age 91. His life ended at age 93. Adam, my son has managed the stores before and now serves as the accountant, so we have had three generations involved in the store my father started.”

Stan says being a part of a family’s most joyous milestone is why he’s still passionate about the business. “I like helping expectant customers furnish their nursery, helping them find the perfect pieces to match what they’ve dreamed about and turn it into a reality.” Storkland has maintained a traditional notion of customer service that harkens back to the time when Blair Furniture was founded. “Storkland has offered personal service for over 40 years and we have sold the best quality furniture and accessories available. It’s the personal service that you won’t find anywhere else, we want to help you through every step and get to know you.” Stan knows a little about joys and travails of family life himself-he has been married to his wife Nikki for 39 years, and has two children and four grandchildren. “They all provide me with so much joy daily,” he says. While running and growing the business has taken up much of Stan’s time over the years, he and Nikki have a house on Smith Lake where he enjoys spending time, “especially when I can get all my grandchildren under one roof.” When asked what he imagines he might have done professionally if he hadn’t gone into the furniture business, he says, “I am a people person, so I would definitely be in some sort of sales where I could deal with people all day and talk to people as big part of my job.” Each issue we will feature a business voted by you for a Parent's Choice Award. For previous features and recommendations from other parents on best ice cream, pediatrician, baby boutique and more see the complete guide online.

shopping for a solution An Alabaster mother creates a grocery cart solution for special needs kids. BY JANE LONGSHORE

NECESSITY, AS THEY SAY, IS THE MOTHER

When Alabaster mom Drew Ann Long became fed up with the weekly struggle to take her growing special needs daughter Caroline grocery shopping, she took it upon herself to create a solution-Caroline’s Cart. “When I needed to shop, I felt a sense of frustration due to my limited options,” says Long. “Pushing both Caroline in a wheelchair and a grocery cart at the same time was not feasible. I would have to find a sitter for Caroline, bring someone with me to push her wheelchair, or take her shopping with me and only purchase what I could carry while pushing her wheelchair.”

In 2008, when Caroline was eight years old, Long sketched out her ideal shopping cart and began researching grocery cart manufacturers on the Internet. She contacted an engineering design firm in Indianapolis, Indiana, to develop a cart prototype and retained a lawyer to file a patent. She and her husband David were committed to making Caroline’s Cart a reality. Caroline’s Cart, now available for sale to grocers and retailers across the country, has a range of features that enable older special needs children to ride comfortably in the cart, while still allowing the cart to maneuver smoothly through store aisles. The cart’s seat offers easy loading capability, including a five-point harness and five-degree tilt for security and stability, and handles that swing open and closed to make the seat more accessible. The seat also features an abductor that offers children with low muscle tone more control. The base of the cart is solid, which gives children a place to rest their feet. An extra set of wheels under the seat end of the cart ensures that the cart won’t tilt forward if a child steps on it. Hooks along the side of the cart offer an extra place to hang shopping bags, while the far end of the cart features a handle so the cart can be pulled easily. The Longs received a welcome confidence boost courtesy of Easter Seals, the national advocacy nonprofit for people with disabilities. “Caroline’s Cart will be welcomed by thousands of

families who have children with disabilities,” said Sara Brewster, vice president, marketing communications for Easter Seals. “This shopping cart will make it possible for kids with disabilities to be part of a family shopping outing. More than this, when families use Caroline’s Cart in neighborhood stores, it sends an important message to everyone who sees them that kids with disabilities are kids first and need to be included.” Caroline’s Cart has also received media coverage from AL.com, Special Needs Travel Mom,

“This shopping cart will make it possible for kids with disabilities to be part of a family shopping outing.” Disabled World, CNN, Progressive Grover, and Alabama’s Fox 6 WBRC, ABC 33/40, and NBC 13 news. The media attention is rewarding, but for Drew Ann, the most important part of the endeavor is that she hopes her invention will make it a little easier for families to include their special needs children in an everyday part of life. “To know that this cart will be waiting for us at stores will be such a relief to so many families.”

ST. VINCENT'S HEALTH SYSTEM—

which includes St. Vincent’s Birmingham, St. Vincent’s Blount, St. Vincent’s East, St. Vincent’s St. Clair, and St. Vincent’s One Nineteen—has helped three generations of families welcome their newest members, not only by offering leading edge maternity services, but also by encouraging the whole family to take part in the birthing journey. A variety of classes are offered to help expectant parents, as well as siblings, grandparents, and other caregivers prepare for and adjust to the new baby. First-time parents are generally flush with questions and anxieties, and St. Vincent’s offers classes specifically geared for their needs. Preparing for Parenthood is a fourclass series for first-time parents that includes lessons on understanding the labor and delivery process, the stages of labor, options for pain relief, indications for cesarean birth, postpartum care, newborn characteristics, newborn care and safety, and feeding options. The classes meet one night a week or on Saturdays for four weeks. Participants should register during their fifth month of pregnancy to begin classes during their seventh month. Preparing for Parenthood is available at St. Vincent’s Birmingham

and St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. Coping Skills for Labor and Delivery—a supplement to Preparing for Parenthood offered at St. Vincent's Birmingham and St. Vincent's One Nineteen-is a twohour class that allows mothers and partners to review and practice the relaxation, breathing, and comfort measures learned in the Preparing for Parenthood class. These skills are meant to help the mother cope with the discomforts of labor at home and after arriving at the hospital. The Prepared Childbirth Class, offered at St. Vincent’s East, is a Saturday course offered every other month for first-time mothers and a support person, as well as parents who would like a refresher course. Topics include signs of labor, labor and delivery, coping techniques for labor (including practice), post-partum care (in hospital and at home), and care of a newborn (in hospital and at home). One of the most potentially fraught aspects of childbirth is breastfeeding. For some women it comes as easily as breathing-for many others, it’s more of a learning process, if not a downright struggle. Fortunately, St. Vincent’s offers a full array of educational opportunities and services for breastfeeding mothers, delivered by International Board-certified lactation consultants. Lactation services run the gamut, from the full-service outpatient Lactation Center to private breastfeeding and pumping rooms and breast-pump rentals and supplies. 24 www.albabymag.com

Classes include Breastfeeding: Skills for Success, a two-hour class at St. Vincent’s Birmingham and St. Vincent’s One Nineteen that explores common breastfeeding challenges and solutions; and Breastfeeding, a weeknight course offered every other month at St. Vincent’s East to supplement the Prepared Childbirth Class. Participants learn about the skills needed for breastfeeding in the hospital and at home, nutrition, breast pumps, and returning to work. A healthy lifestyle is integral to a smooth pregnancy, so St. Vincent’s Birmingham offers a Perinatal Aquatics Exercise class that meets for one hour on Tuesday and Thursday each week. The program includes warm-up, cardiovascular activities, strengthening exercises, and relaxation. Swimming experience is not required and shallow pool depths are available. Women may participate through the full term of pregnancy with a consent form signed by the obstetrician. St. Vincent’s offers opportunities for all members of the family—fathers,

siblings, and even grandparents—to get in on the excitement of preparing for a new baby. Daddy 101: Just for Dad! at St. Vincent’s Birmingham helps fathers-to-be learn about baby care, infant behavior, signs of illness, health and safety, labor and delivery, dad’s role in breastfeeding, childproofing techniques, and more. Siblings: Brothers and Sisters is a Saturday class at St. Vincent’s Birmingham for children ages three to eight (accompanied by at least one parent) to learn about how to be a helper in caring for the new baby, what babies can do, creating a safe environment, and behaving safely around the baby. Safe at Home—designed for children ages 11 and older who might be home alone or caring for a brother or sister while parents are away—covers basic first aid and practicing safe behavior in the home. The Grandparents Class, offered at St. Vincent’s Birmingham and St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, is a two-hour course for expectant grandparents, as well as aunts, uncles, and other adult

A variety of classes are offered to help expectant parents, as well as siblings, grandparents, and other caregivers prepare for and adjust to the new baby. support figures to learn about new trends in childbirth, newborn care, soothing a fussy baby, infant and grandparent safety, the new parents, supportive communication, and what makes grandparenting such a special role. A range of additional classes is offered for family members and caretakers. SuperSitters is for boys and girls ages 11 and older and covers basic babysitting skills including bathing, feeding, changing diapers, appropriate games and activities for certain age levels, and safety. Girl Power is designed to help girls ages nine to 12 understand and accept the natural changes that occur with early adolescence. The program addresses developing a positive self-image while accepting the physical changes that accompany puberty. Most classes at St. Vincent’s Birmingham include tours of the Birth Suites and family waiting areas. To register for any of the classes, call St. Vincent’s Dial-A-Nurse at 205-939-7878 or 800-331-6777. For more information on maternity services, visit www.stvhs.com/baby. www.albabymag.com 25

Top-notch, hassle-free family getaways in Alabama’s own Gulf Shores.

o

ONE OF THE BEST ADVANTAGES of living in Alabama is easy accessibility to world-class beaches along

the Gulf Coast. Gulf Shores, which until fairly recently was a sleepy coastal town, has become a favorite vacation destination for families across the South, and, indeed, across the country. The development of top-notch accommodations has contributed in large part to the rising popularity of the area. The Beach Club, far from a typical high-rise development, has been designed to look and feel like a small Southern town, with a variety of lodging options available for single families or larger groups. Four waterfront towers house residences ranging in size from one to five bedrooms, each with a fully equipped kitchen, private balcony or patio, and panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico. Lakeside cottages offer expanded floor plans, full-size gourmet kitchens, comfortable living rooms, sizable bedrooms, and outdoor living space. Select cottages also feature a private swimming pool, hot tub, and grill. www.albabymag.com 27

THE BEACH CLUB - GULF SHORES The Beach Club - Gulf Shores 925 Beach Club Trail Gulf Shores, AL 36542 Reservations: 866-348-9112 thebeachclub.spectrumresorts.com

As the area’s only full-service resort, The Beach Club offers families plenty of options to keep everyone entertained. In addition to five pools, The Beach Club has a game room, a playground, eight tennis courts, and a basketball court. Activities are scheduled throughout the year, including the Dive-In Movie and Campfire, Family Pool Party, Family Survivor, The Amazing Race scavenger challenge, poolside karaoke, and the Pirates Brigade summer day camp for children ages 5 to 11 to enjoy while parents indulge in amenities for adults, like the full-service spa offering massage therapy, skin care, body treatments, and salon services. Dining options range from upscale fine dining at the waterfront Southbeach at The Beach Club, offering gourmet Southern specialties, to the family-friendly Village Hideaway, with creative grilled dishes, an extensive selection of craft beers, pool tables, shuffleboard, video games, and flat screen TVs. The Gulfside Grill is a seasonal poolside eatery perfect for grabbing a casual bite before returning to the pool or beach, while the Tiki Bar offers tropical beverages, beer, and wine. The go-to spot for gourmet coffee and espresso drinks, fresh-baked breakfast goods, hand-dipped ice cream, specialty shakes, and fruit smoothies is The Village Creamery. With all the onsite options it’s not necessary to leave the property, but should guests decide to venture out, The Beach Club is near all the entertainment and dining options Gulf Shores has to offer, including golf courses, shopping, fishing, and nature observation activities, as well as area attractions like Historic Fort Morgan, Waterville, Tanger Outlet, and The Track Amusement Park. With the pressures of competing, packed schedules, planning a family vacation today requires the coordination and finesse of a master conductor. And even the most carefully planned trips sometimes fall prey to the unexpected. Thankfully, The Beach Club offers reservations with no money down and a two week cancellation policy for when unanticipated complications arise. All this, and an easy drive from just about anywhere in the state? We are blessed indeed to live-and play-in Alabama. 28 www.albabymag.com
