More homeowners are taking on projects that will allow them to age comfortably in their current home, according to the “2017 Aging in Place Report� from HomeAdvisor. But they don’t like the term “aging in place.� Researchers, who surveyed those 55 years old and up for the report, found that many of these homeowners are completing projects that put more emphasis on ease-of-living improvements than aesthetics. But researchers also found that many homeowners won’t call these improvements “aging in place,� even though the term may accurately describe the projects.

The term “Aging in Place� is elusive. Just 43 percent of participants aged 55 to 75 — and just 52 percent of participants over the age of 75 — say they’re familiar with the term. 3. Homeowners are completing futurethinking projects without connecting them to aging in place. Survey respondents aged 55 to 75 and aged 75 and older are making home improvements that will facilitate aging, citing ease of living as their motive for completing most projects — even over safety and aesthetics. 4. Life stages influence homeowners’ home project selections. While all participants cite ease of living as their motive for completing most home projects, homeowners in different life stages report completing the same home projects for different reasons. 5. Watching loved ones struggle impacts how homeowners view aging in place. Roughly three in five homeowners aged 5575 report seeing a loved one (a parent, sibling, partner, etc.) struggle to get around their home as they got older, further reporting that this experience has changed their feelings about how they will age in place personally. 6. Planning pays off. Nearly half of homeowners aged 75 and over report renovating their homes in anticipation of getting older. By September, first-time buyers had showed more signs of pulling back. They comprised just 29 percent of sales, down from 34 percent a year prior. Since 2011, the share of firsttime home buyers has been below the historic norm of 40 percent.
But there are still many potential buyers on the sidelines who may be under the impression they need a bigger down payment before they can buy. NAR conducted a survey of nonhomeowners earlier this year and found that most consumers believe you need a down payment of 10 percent or 20 percent to buy a home. “They may not be aware that these programs are available, and they may not be taking advantage of them,” Jessica Lautz, NAR’s managing director of survey research and communications, said in the latest Down Payment Report, published by the Down Payment Resource. Thirty-two percent of first-time buyers said they saved for more than two years in order to be able to have enough to buy a home. Student loan debt was the most often cited obstacle to saving. The second most cited barrier for saving was credit card debt. “Despite widespread access to low down payments, looser lending standards, and mortgage rates that are still historically low, potential first-time buyers are putting off buying a home until conditions improve,” according to The Down Payment Report. “For many of these discouraged young families, rising
