Ask LadyByrd the Eventista! Dear LadyByrd, I am visiting my boyfriend’s family for the first time, for the Thanksgiving holiday! We have been dating for a year and I really care about him, but I am extremely nervous about meeting his family. They have a big, fancy dinner for the holidays, which is new for me, and his mother is very particular about all of the arrangements and planning. I want to make a good impression on her and the rest of his family. Do you have any tips for me? Sincerely, Grateful Guest Dear Grateful Guest, What a daunting visit! You will not only be meeting the parents for the first time, which is stressful enough, but you will meet the entire family on a very emotionally charged holiday. Thanksgiving is the one holiday of the year that tends to bring out the best and worst in family. Among the delicious food flowing in abundance, there tends to be awkward outbursts, football rivalries and that one obnoxious family member. The good news is, if things are getting serious between you lovebirds, this is a great way to really see what your future family will be like. So, to help you navigate this rather precarious gathering, here are a few do’s and don’ts that are sure to help you, and anyone else who is in your position, make a great impression: • DO have a conversation with your guy about expectations, both yours and his, prior to the holiday. Have him give you the rundown of his family members and things to and not to say and do around them. Not clapping your hands around Uncle Charlie, a war veteran with PTSD, might be a helpful tip that you will want to know in advance. • DO come up with exit strategy and panic signals if necessary. If you begin to feel overwhelmed or find yourself in a uncomfortable situation, create a signal that only you and your guy know that lets him know when to swoop in and rescue you. • DO plan to bring something to the event. Ask your guy if he could suggest items to bring or if he would be OK with you calling Mommy Dearest in advance to ask her if she would like for you to bring something. (100 Cool points!) This will go over well with Mom. Even though she may say to just bring yourself, do not come empty-handed. Some items to bring are a nice holiday bouquet or potted plant, seasonal cookies or candies or a great family DVD. A caution about wine: Ask first.

This can be a bit challenging if the hosts do not drink alcohol or permit it in their home, if there will be recovering alcoholics present or your selection may conflict with the hostess’ wine selections. • DO NOT forget to tell your guy if you have any dietary restrictions. And if your condition is pretty serious, consider bringing your own meal. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking what is in certain dishes so that you can avoid them if necessary. • DO NOT cling to your guy the entire time or sit awkwardly in the corner of a room. Be prepared to meet and mingle with your potentially future family members. Also expect that a good hostess will probably seat you across from your guy. Don’t get your britches in a bunch about it, just plan to cozy up to Grandma or Aunt Suzy and smile! • DO NOT pull out your cell phone unless it is absolutely necessary. This is a family event and the expectation is that you be fully present. All eyes will be on you, the new girl, so disengaging by looking at videos on Facebook or checking emails will appear rude. If you must make or answer a call, politely excuse yourself and step outside if possible. • DO participate in family conversations. Spend a little time beforehand preparing how to answer general questions like, “Where are you from?”, “What do your parents do?”, “What are you majoring in in college?”, “What are your future career goals?”, “What do you do for a living?”, etc. Try to stay clear from controversial topics like religion, race or politics. And keep conversations as lighthearted as possible. • DO HAVE FUN! If the family has Thanksgiving traditions, participate in them. Say grace, tell what you are thankful for, play flag football, cheer for whatever team your guy cheers for (if you don’t already have your own), go shopping, feed the homeless and play a board game or two. Unless their traditions somehow compromise your morals and values, let your hair down and enjoy! • DON’T forget to thank the hostess when you leave and if you have a great time, let her know with an email within 48 hours. • DO remember to be yourself. People pleasing gets you nowhere, honey, and if this is to be your future family, they should fall in love with the real you. Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Cheers! LadyByrd

Want More Distance, Think Smooth Jesse Riley Assistant Golf Professional Doublegate Country Club Every golfer wants to maximize their distance off the tee. In doing so, many times they over swing, trying to hit the ball as hard as they can. This often times has a negative effect, causing shorter distance and more offline shots. Here are three keys to hit the ball more efficiently and in fact get more distance: 1. Swing the club, don’t hit the ball- Golf is unique in that you don’t actually try to hit the golf ball. You let the ball get in way of your swing. When you try to hit the ball, you tend to get tense right at impact, throwing off every bit of stored energy. Instead, swing the club as if the ball isn’t even there. This is why the practice swing is usually smooth and relaxed and the actual golf swing is rigid and off balance. 2. Feel the club load at the top- Once the club gets to the top of the swing, feel the club “load” or set at the top. Many times golfers are in such a hurry to get back to the ball that they never complete the backswing. Let the club get back, set it, then start down. 3. Stay relaxed- Keeping the body relaxed helps with timing, contact, and distance.. Look at all the great tour players. When you watch them hit a crisp iron shot, it looks almost like it’s in slow motion. This is because they are RELAXED throughout the swing. Follow these 3 keys and you will find yourself out driving your buddies and finding more fairways and greens.

CROSSWORD SOLUTION

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Silversun Pickups return with new album By Brad McEwen brad.mcewen@albanyherald.com

ALBANY — As Los Angeles alternative rockers Silversun Pickups return to the public’s attention with the release of their latest full-length, “Better Nature,” drummer Christopher Guanlao says it’s been a long time coming. “We’re excited to get back out there,” Guanlao said during a recent phone interview. “We took about a year off (after completing the touring cycle for 2012’s “Neck of the Woods”). It’s been too long.” Fortunately for Guanloa and bandmates singer/guitarist Brian Aubert, bassist/vocalist Nikki Monninger and multi-instrumentalist Joe Lester, their fans and the rest of the music world seem primed for their return as well. “That’s one thing about taking these long breaks, you don’t know if people are still interested in what you’re doing,” Guanloa said. “What I’ve noticed, though, like on social media, there’s a lot of people out there waiting for us and that really means a lot to us.” It’s no surprise a steady buzz has been building around the band in anticipation of the new record. Silversun Pickups found seemingly instant success after the release of their 2005 EP, “Pikul,” and that good fortune has continued to grow. The band served notice that it was a force to be reckoned with in the rock world on the strength of its debut full-length album, “Carnavas,” released in 2006. That album, which coincidentally was released on Sept. 25, just like “Better Nature” this year, spawned two huge singles — “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles” — both of which landed in the top 10 of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and were subsequently found, along with the track “Melatonin,” on a few Rock Band and Guitar Hero video games. Three years later, in 2009, the band dropped “Swoon,” which broadened the Pickups’ popularity thanks to the success of tracks like “Growing Old is Getting Old,” “Substitution,” “Sort Of” and the furious “Panic Switch.” Having escaped any kind of sophomore slump, the band maintained its growing popularity while stretching out its sound under the direction of producer Jacknife Lee, who encouraged Silversun Pickups to experiment with different types of

sounds and added instrumentation, including electronic elements. Lee was again at the helm for the group’s latest effort and again he’s had a significant impact, challenging the members to leave their comfort zones. That has helped the Pickups create an album that finds the band perfecting its sound. Guanloa said that in the past the Pickups’ songs had always come from rough sketches created by Aubert that were then fleshed out in jam sessions. The band would then pre-record demo versions of the songs before hitting the studio for final recordings, mixing and mastering the finished product. “Normally, we kind of jam things out and then we’ll go into the studio knowing exactly what we’re going to do,” Guanloa said. “The first time we recorded with Jacknife, he had us disassemble and discard a lot of what we had and we ended up building it from scratch. This time, we realized we shouldn’t go in with any preconceived ideas about how this album was going to go. So we did a lot less of the preproduction. “Brian still came up with the core, the foundation, but we didn’t hold on to anything too tightly because we figured a lot of things would end up changing. We knew we had to ride with it and be ready to improvise, make a hard right turn or a hard left turn. It kept us on our toes.” Another positive during the recording of “Better Nature” was the way the entire band stayed involved in the recording process from start to finish. On past albums, recording was done based on instruments, so Guanloa would record relatively early in the process, laying down drum tracks for each of an album’s songs. “Before, I’d go in and do my drum tracks and be done in two weeks,” Guanloa. “This time we tried to record song by song rather than track by track, where you do drums, then bass, then guitars then vocals and lyrics last. This time we were all constantly involved in the process, which was really cool.” Despite the changes in the creative process, “Better Nature” maintains the signature sound Silversun Pickups fans have come to expect. There’s still tons of dynamics in each track, and there’s still loads of fuzzed-out guitar heroics, pounding drums and swirling atmospherics. But there also seems to be an overall step forward in the songwriting

process, giving the album a simultaneously energetic and relaxed feel. “Better Nature” is the work of a wellhoned group of musicians that has been creating and performing together long enough (nearly 15 years) that they operate as one unit, particularly on standout tracks like the recently released “Nightlight,” the hard-charging “Connection,” the hypnotic “Friendly Fires” and the towering “Tapedeck.” “We do what we do, and our sound just kind of happens when we get together and play, so we don’t really think about that,” Guanloa said. “We feed off each other really well, and there’s a lot of good communication. With this album, which we’re really excited about, I feel it’s a lot more mature, like we’ve grown into our own skin. It’s really how we want things to sound. We’re really excited and ready to put the record out.” Although “Better Nature” is Silversun Pickups’ fourth full-length recording, it is the band’s first record to be released on its own New Machine Recordings, which Guanloa said was a thrilling yet slightly daunting decision. “Going into the recording process, we always had an idea that was what we were going to do,” the drummer said of the band’s decision to leave Los Angeles independent Dangerbird Records and start its own label. “We had come to the end of our deal. We figured we needed a fresh start.” Guanloa said that as the band started weighing options, it became increasingly clear that signing with a major label offered little incentive and that any

potential deals would likely involve ceding some level of control and profit to the record company. “Everything out there seemed bleak; the days of huge advances and living large are over,” Guanloa said. “Major labels are great for Beyonce or Katy Perry, (artists) that sell tons of albums. But for us, we’re a blue-collar band. We’ve had really good success, but we’re not an arena band or anything. Record sales are constantly dipping. Getting rid of the middle man and doing it ourselves (was the better option). Getting our own label is our way of surviving.” Much of that survival comes from New Machine Recordings allowing the Pickups to take control of expenses and profits, which Guanloa said he feels makes everyone in the group more accountable and helps everyone stay focused on the bigger picture while also creating the potential for greater stability. “There’s a lot more reward,” Guanloa said. “Profits from records, touring and merchandise, that’s all coming back to us. It’s definitely a win-win. We’re also a lot more accountable, too. We’re more conscience of everything, more aware.” While Guanloa admits to some nerves as Silversun Pickups ready for the new release, his overall mood is one of excitement and anticipation, especially as he thinks about getting back in front of its fans and playing live. The band recently played a few select shows, which Guanloa said only reinforced his belief that the Pickups will be well-received when they return to the road. “We just played our first two shows in over a year and half, and I couldn’t believe the reception that we got,” Guanloa said. “It was amazing. The people were awesome.” Although he couldn’t disclose any details, Guanloa said a North American tour is in the works and he is more than ready to hit the road. “I want to play, and I can’t wait to get out there as soon as possible,” he said. “Our fans are awesome. It’s going to happen soon. I’ll say 2016 for sure.” While fans will have to wait a little longer for a full-blown Silversun Pickups tour, they’ll be plenty sated now that “Better Nature” is available.
