Sundowner Motel duo ‘family business’ for Gosas By Carlton Fletcher ALBANY — As Jon Gosa plays and sings “Borrowed Time,” the opening track of his and wife Anna’s new EP, the self-titled, “Sundowner Motel,” a visitor gets the sense that Gosa is as free in his music as he’s ever been. As an integral part of various bands since he was a 14-year-old high school freshman, Gosa’s seen different versions of his musical vision implode over what has turned into a 26-year-and-counting career. Now Gosa and Anna, his wife of 11 years, are performing together as Sundowner Motel, eschewing the rockbased music that’s been a part of his life in the business since he and friends formed the cover band Legacy circa 1989 for a more stripped-down, folky, singer/songwriter brand of music that perfectly suits where Gosa’s muse is currently leading him. “In the past, playing with various bands, it always seemed that things like different agendas, personal problems and egos got in the way of the music,” Gosa said. “I’ve had so many projects self-destruct over the years, I finally decided to strip things down and make music about where I am and where I’ve come from. “With a band, you’re creating a sound that encompasses a group of musicians, each one wanting to add his own stuff to the mix. The music Anna and I are making is more personal, there’s a selflessness to it. I believe that comes with maturity, with having a family, with being a parent and realizing there are more important things in life.” The Gosas, who have been performing together for the better part of two years, will host a coming-out release party for the “Sundowner Motel” EP at 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at Newman’s Bar & Grill.

The six songs on the CD are indeed stripped-down and intensely personal, exploring issues like death, loss and the infamous Flood of 1994 that all but immobilized Albany and a large portion of Southwest Georgia. “When the water came it took everything, at least that’s how it seemed. It’s got a funny way of showing you what things really mean,” the Gosas sing on “The Flood,” the centerpiece of the EP. That track, “Borrowed Time” and “The Good Ones Always Die” infuse the collection with a sense of loss. “I sat down and pretty much wrote ‘Borrowed Time’ the day after (high school friend) Gretchen Wiesenmiller’s funeral,” Gosa said. “There was a sense of mortality that I was dealing with. Then, not long after our good friend Jonathan Wills played piano and organ on three songs on the album, he got sick and eventually died. (Gosa friends Thomas Hitt and Derek Hall also play on the CD.) “Writing about those things is hard, but, looking back on the process, I realized I never felt more like myself as a songwriter. I’ve written more than 130 songs — and plenty of others that I just left behind — but these are songs that reflect who I am. I finally had an opportunity to do what I like to do, what you can’t do with most bands: write the song for the song.” Anna King Gosa, who met her future husband at a party 17 years ago in Athens after he beat her badly at “quarters,” sang generally in church and school musicals growing up in Albany. But her shyness kept her from considering any kind of performance in front of an audience. “Really, when I was at Westover (High School), very few bands got together,” Anna Gosa said. “I know when Jon was See SUNDOWNER, page 20

CROSSWORD SOLUTION

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, it may be challenging to express your true feelings, especially when you fear what others may think. Just do what feels comfortable to you. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Take a sentimental journey with a loved one, Taurus. You never know what examining your emotions will uncover, and you will get to spend quality time together. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you can strike up a conversation with just about anyone this week. Your gift for gab makes you a fun person to have around and a welcome member to any new group. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, someone may catch you off guard this week and you don’t have your go-to plan in place. Worry not, as you will rebound quickly and bounce back in a big way. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, it may seem like everyone is hanging on every word you say this week. Don’t worry about performing, just continue to do what gravitates people toward you. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, although you’re not a big fan of the spotlight, this week you will be asked to handle a situation on center stage. You just may enjoy the situation, so don’t

fret about it. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, share your long-term goals with colleagues and you may find some unexpected allies. Support can only help your efforts even further. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, set personal feelings aside when dealing with professional matters. Allowing emotion to get in the way of your goals will only end up affecting you. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, this is a great time to try something new. Whether it’s a new food or a new experience you’ve been looking to try, dive right in and enjoy the excitement. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, expect to be excited by a budding relationship in the weeks ahead. Open up to friends or family members so you can share this positive development with loved ones. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Waiting patiently this week will not get the job done, Aquarius. You may have to be more assertive to get things done. Others will understand and prove helpful. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a problem at work seems tough to crack. Take your time and try a new approach, and you will be happy with the results.

SUNDOWNER Continued from page 4

there, there were all these bands playing. But there just weren’t many opportunities, especially for girls, when I came along. “After Jon and I met, we hit it off and have been together ever since. I’d sing around with him when we were alone, and he started encouraging me. He’d say, ‘Just sing on this song,’ or ‘Sing this part of this song.’ Little by little, he got me more involved.” PAST TO PRESENT After playing in high school cover bands Legacy and Custom Kills, Gosa hooked up with Westover friends Brand Greco and Alan Martin, and the trio started Three Richards. “That’s when I started writing,” Gosa said. The Richards recorded the wellreceived album “Well-Fed head” at Maxwell Studios in Athens, thanks largely to the backing of Martin’s dad, Russell, himself a noted musician. Before the band members went their separate ways for more adult pursuits, they played such seminal venues as the Georgia Theater and 40 Watt Club in Athens and Atlanta’s Masquerade. Gosa continued to write songs, and over the next few years he formed the bands Gosa, Red Eye Johnson and Another Alien Astronaut. But issues including alcoholism, cross-agendas

and egos ended those projects. The last, with Another Alien Astronaut, proved to be something of a final straw for Gosa. “We recorded an album at Transduction Studios in Athens, and I really thought it was a great album,” Gosa said. “The artwork was done for the album cover, The Herald actually ran a review of the album and everything was ready to go. But we had a band meeting before the album was released, and a lot of hard feelings came out. The biggest thing was members of the band wanted songwriting credit on the album. I’m registered with BMI, and it’s common knowledge that songwriting credit goes to the person who writes the lyrics and the melody. “Out of that disagreement, the band just self-destructed. It seems like, if a circle is symbolic of the band, everyone was focused outside the circle.” With AAA’s demise, Gosa turned inward and started writing songs. Both he and Anna were unemployed for a period, leaving their music as their means of paying bills and putting food on the table for themselves and their son, Aulden. “When Another Alien Astronaut ended, it became important that Jon do all the acoustic sets he could,” Anna Gosa said. “Needing money is a great motivator.” With Anna gradually getting more involved in Jon’s performances — as a singer and as a booking agent/business manager — Sundowner Motel evolved. “Anna has a great ear for harmonies,” Jon Gosa said of his wife. “What I like about her is that she doesn’t do cookie-cutter harmonies. There’s texture to her singing.” With 110 shows under their belts, Sundowner Motel are set to showcase the aforementioned six-song EP, which

will be available at the Sept. 18 release party ($10 for physical copies of the CD, $6.99 for a digital download). The Gosas got a break on the marketing side of what Jon Gosa calls “the family business” when they received permission to use an iconic photograph by Ed Freeman as their logo/album cover. “Ed Freeman worked as a tour manager with the Beatles at one time, and he helped write Don McLean’s ‘American Pie,’” Gosa said. “He’s done a series of photos about ‘lost America’ over the years, and one of them was at an old motel in California that was built during a boom period in an area that’s basically a ghost town now. All that’s left of the hotel is this great sign and a staircase going to nowhere. “We’d named our band Sundowner Motel after that old truck stop off (U.S. Highway) 82 that we’d driven by so many times on trips to Tifton. I found Ed’s photo online, and when we read about him, Anna said he’d never let us use it. I decided to email him anyway, told him we were starving artists ready to release our first CD, and he emailed me back the next day. He said if we’d

been signed to a major label, he would have demanded $4- or $5,000. But he let us have the photo and rights to use it for $200.” While the Gosas’ immediate future is focused on their EP release, all their eggs aren’t in that one basket. Jon said he’s already written five or six tracks for a new album, and Anna is looking at booking shows in an ever-expanding area. “One of the songs on the album (‘Just Get in Line’) is about how friends will turn their backs on you, and that’s what happens when you play a lot and try to make a living in your hometown,” Jon Gosa said. “It’s so much easier, so much more fun, to play somewhere where people don’t know you and don’t know your backstory. They judge you by what you bring onstage, the songs you play.” “Anna and I are really into the kinds of songs that Jason Isbell plays, the almost folksy songs that tell stories. The whole rock thing doesn’t play into where I am anymore. And it’s really awesome to play a show and, when it’s over, your ears don’t ring.”

Garage sales, tag sales, yard sales, and flea markets are great places to find preowned items. Men and women who are both bargain- and eco-conscious can organize their own neighborhood sales where several houses around the neighborhood pool their items for one large sale. Bargain hunters can then peruse the collected merchandise and feel good knowing their purchases are benefitting the environment.

P u rc h a s in g used items may be good for the wallet, but such purchases also can benefit the environment. Used items go on sale every day, whether they’re preowned cars or used clothing.
