his week’s featured home is located in Palmyra Acres in Lee County. Situated just off of Highway 82, this home is convenient to Albany shopping and dining! A nicely manicured 1acre lot surrounds this three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode. The exterior reflects a Spanish style with archways and stucco walls. A covered front porch leads to the entryway. Inside the home, you will find an open floor plan with a split bedroom design, which gives the

master suite more privacy. The great room, dining room, and kitchen flow into each other and share a cathedral ceiling. The dining area is situated in front of a bank of sunny windows overlooking the front of the property. Inside the great room is a cozy fireplace and plenty of space for entertaining family and guests. A breakfast bar divides the great room from the kitchen. Within the kitchen are bright white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a tiled

backsplash. The open great room and kitchen area makes for a perfect entertaining space. Guests can mingle throughout the connected spaces with ease. Adjacent to the kitchen is a casual dining nook with a bay window. The master suite has it all! It is spacious and features a sitting area. Double closets provide plenty of storage space. The large private bathroom has his and hers vanities and a shower/tub combo. The two additional bedrooms are good-sized and share a full

bathroom on the hallway. This bathroom features a single vanity and a shower/tub combo. Outside the home is an oversized double garage and a separate storage building. Exterior lighting improves the safety and appearance of a home COURTESY OF METROCONNECTION

When drafting a to-do list for home improvements that can increase home value and appeal, several renovations may be atop homeowners’ lists. While kitchen or bathroom remodels may be popular renovations, homeowners also should consider outdoor lighting schemes that can make homes safer and more alluring. Outdoor lighting serves various purposes. Such lighting can draw attention to more impressive parts of a property. In addition, such lighting can improve security and deter criminals. To get started, homeowners should first examine the exteriors of their homes and make note of existing lighting and where improvements can be made. If you’re not sure where to begin, speak with an electrician or a landscape designer, each of whom can offer suggestions on lighting

and which options are the best fit for your particular property. Next, you’ll want to consider efficiency and function. The United States Department of Energy suggests incorporating energy-efficient lighting, including energy-saving LED bulbs or fluorescent lights, into your plans. Timers and other automatic controls can prevent waste by turning lights on only when they are needed. Solar lights can be used as accent lights, further saving energy. Beauty When addressing aesthetics, think about the appeal of an accented landscape. Include lights to frame the front door and call attention to certain elements, such as decorative trees or water features. Use lights to light up deck stairways or to accent planters. Speak with a lighting professional about how to position lights to cover the most territory in the most attractive way possible.

Safety Safety is an important consideration when improving a home. Lighting can help illuminate potential hazards or draw attention to borders or property boundaries. Navigating in the dark can be treacherous, so put lights along pathways and near pools or spas. Be sure that lights will clearly mark other walkways around your home, such as those leading from doors to the yard or from the garage to where trash and recycling pails are kept. If a design element such as a bridge over a water feature or a particular ornamental tree or shrub is difficult to navigate in the dark, use lights to improve visibility. Security Added security is another reason to install more exterior lighting. Dark homes are attractive to burglars. Eliminate

dark corners by lighting up areas where thieves may be able to gain access to your home. This includes areas near doorways and groundlevel windows. Install motion-sensor lights in such areas so you are not wasting energy. Lighting may not only deter

human intruders, but also it can scare away animals. A raccoon, skunk or opossum may think twice about hanging around your home when your property is bathed in a spotlight. Revamping exterior lighting elements can improve the safety and the look of a home.

Guide to replacing home siding

Considerations for outdoor entertaining COURTESY OF METROCONNECTION

Outdoor parties have a flair all their own. Entertaining outside means being able to enjoy the fresh air, sun and extra space that the great outdoors allows. Entertaining outdoors may include intimate barbecues with friends or weddings with hundreds of guests. While parks, yards, and gardens can make beautiful backdrops for parties, hosts still need to emphasize preparation when throwing an outdoor party. Select and prepare the space Many homeowners host parties for friends and family in their backyards. Whereas other spaces, including parks, require the transport of food and other supplies, backyards offer the ultimate in convenience, allowing homeowners to cook foods in their kitchens and then carry items directly to the

backyard. Backyards are not always set up or equipped for events, and preparation will be required to turn the yard into a party-worthy area. Plan a day for cleanup. Remove toys, tools and debris. Be sure the grass is mowed and clippings are removed. Address any tripping hazards and make sure there is an easy path in and out of the party, as well as to the restrooms. Take inventory of tables and seating options and rent or buy extra seating if necessary. Provide shade and shelter Every party host hopes for good weather when entertaining outside, but it is best to have a contingency plan in place just in case Mother Nature does not cooperate. Awnings and patio umbrellas can only do so much, and it may be necessary to install pop-up tents or stationary gazebos to

protect guests from the elements. Think about renting tents from party supply companies, which usually will erect the tents and take them down after use. Even if the weather will be pleasant, have spots where guests can escape the sun. It can be uncomfortable and dangerous to sit in the sun for long periods of time. Keep food temperatures consistent If you plan to offer buffet-style cuisine, arrange for serving dishes that will keep foods hot or cold as needed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition advises that it is important to keep foods safe when entertaining outside. Cold foods should be kept in coolers or served on beds of ice. Use hot chafing dishes to keep hot foods at a serving temperature at or

Few home improvements can transform a home more than the installation of new siding. Replacing siding can be a costly venture, but the right siding will maintain its appeal for years to come. Updated siding can improve home’s energy value by enabling owners to save on heating and cooling costs. A new design and color also can improve a home’s property value and set it apart from neighboring properties. According to the Professional Builder’s Home Exteriors Survey, exterior design and materials used are a top priority for new home buyers. Project costs depend on the size of the home as well as which siding material homeowners choose. Considering new siding is a major renovation, it pays to get the job done right.

Plan for insects Entertaining outdoors means sharing the space with insects and animals. Ants can be a nuisance, but wasps and bees can be harmful, particularly if a person is allergic. Use repellent candles around the entertaining space to keep bugs away. Make canisters of insect repellent available to guests. Home improvement centers sell bug traps to keep bees and other insects away from foods and people by using sweet lures. Netting on tents or a screened-in area also can keep guests comfortable. Partying outdoors can be convenient and fun. But hosts still must take steps to ensure their guests have a safe and enjoyable time.

Choose a qualified contractor It is important for consumers to do their research when it comes to siding materials and contractors. A contractor who takes shortcuts or improperly installs the siding may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Always ask family members and friends for recommendations before choosing a contractor, and check out each prospective contractor’s work for yourself. Interview more than one contractor and compare both their costs and what they offer. Ask plenty of questions of the contractors, and avoid those who try hard-sell methods. Questionable contractors may try strategies like a promise of a considerable discount if you “act now” or scare tactics that your home is unsafe in its present condition. Be sure the contractor carries general liability insurance as well as

Calculate how much you need Before you price out siding with contractors, estimate how much you will need for your house. Consumer Reports suggests multiplying the height times the width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine their areas. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular surfaces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that won’t be covered. Finally, divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you will need. A square represents 100 square feet. Knowing how much you need can save you money. Vinyl siding can completely transform the look of a home and make it more energy efficient. Consumers who do their homework will get the best value for their investments.

Select a durable material Siding comes in all types of materials — from wood to plastic to fiber cement — but vinyl is among the most popular due to cost and availability. Research how well particular brands of siding stand up to conditions and which are the least likely to crack, warp or discolor. Find this information from online reviews or through consumer advocacy groups. Also remember, vinyl and other synthetic materials have improved and can now mimic the look of many other materials for a fraction of the cost.

Creative ways to recycle leaves Renovating a kitchen? These trade secrets can help you achieve your dream kitchen

COURTESY OF METROCONNECTION

Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. • Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. • Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter. • Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. • Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. • Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. • Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.â€?

(BPT) - It's no secret people like to renovate their kitchen -the heart of the home, where typical American families spend most of their at-home time. However, it can be overwhelming for many homeowners to start designing their dream kitchen without guidance from a professional. Renowned designer and artistic advisor to LG Studio, Nate Berkus, has designed countless kitchens in his 20 years in the industry and knows the secret to creating a forever kitchen, one that will stand the test of time and grow with you and your family. "During a renovation, picking a place to start can be very overwhelming because there are so many decisions to make - from countertops to seating and light fixtures to appliances," says Berkus. "You want your kitchen to represent who you are and your lifestyle. Reach for things you love, mixed in with timeless elements that will stand the test of time." Newell Turner, editorial director of Hearst Design Group, agrees. "It's easy to want to replicate a kitchen you see in a magazine when designing your own space," Turner says. "However, it's important to incorporate small design touches that make the space your own. That may mean bringing in elements from other rooms or making an unexpected design choice to create a space that is truly yours." Berkus offers his latest and greatest trade secrets on what makes for a welldesigned space, particularly for the hardest working room in your home the kitchen: Create character There is so much inspiration out there, but my rule of thumb is to reach always for what you love - things that tell your story and reflect who you are. Often that means reaching for what you already live with and love. Think baskets, vases, picture frames, geodes and crystals, woven bowls and brass candlesticks. These are things that will make the room feel layered and lived in. Repurposing what you already own and love is the easiest way to make your design personal without costing you a thing. Build a beautiful foundation There are a few things in your kitchen that are truly worth splurging on. If something has been used for the

last 50 years ago, chances are it's still a sure bet. Think white subway tile, marble countertops and top-of-the-line appliances to create a timeless kitchen. Consider a premium appliance line like LG Studio that marries high-end technology with a beautiful aesthetic to serve as the foundation for your dream kitchen. If you have a large family or love to entertain, make sure you have a refrigerator that can go the distance. The LG Studio 3-door counter-depth refrigerator has a ton of shelf space and a handy "door-in-door" feature that is perfect for kids. Lighting is key Great lighting automatically sets the mood of a room. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, you want to create a well-lit environment that is functional, but that also looks good. Include lighting in all the places you'll need it - over dining areas, under cabinets and in entryways. One favorite trick I use in every kitchen I design - a dimming feature that allows you to set the scene, whatever the occasion. Save smartly When it comes to designing any space, it's all about well-designed basics such as stainless steel appliances and marble countertops, but certain elements like vintage bar stools and lighting fixtures can add so much character to your space, and can be picked up in an afternoon at your favorite flea market. Vintage and antique stores in your neighborhood are a great place to find one-of-a-kind pieces that feel special. Switch up your seating Something that feels unexpected and interesting in the kitchen is to mix up the seating. Experiment with different seating configurations, like adding a bench to a traditional or farmhousestyle dining table, or mixing and matching vintage dining chairs. You can even go a step further and create a seating area with a sofa and area rug to really set the scene and create a space that can be hardworking for your family. Kitchens are where people gather to eat and spend quality time together, so you want the design to reflect your family's personality.
