Message from the Chairman of the Board Dear Alumni and Friends, It has been a year of accomplishment at Albany Law School, as the Class of 2014 graduated and launched their careers. Our students have taken advantage of the power of our place in New York’s capital, serving as clerks in the courts, as interns with the state legislature, executive agencies, district attorneys’ offices, and in private law firms. They contributed hundreds of hours in pro bono service to victims of domestic violence, individuals with health concerns or disabilities, senior citizens and veterans. Experiences like these continue to prepare high – value Albany Law School graduates for employment. Their success is made possible not only by a dedicated faculty and staff, but also by the commitment of our partners in the community and our network of some 10,000 alumni. They mentor students. They lecture in our classes and seminars, on panels, and in CLEs. They interview and hire student interns, law clerks and young associates. They work with students in our Clinics. They volunteer with the National Alumni Association. They host alumni events, meet prospective students, and advocate for the law school in their professional circles. Albany Law alumni never truly leave our school—we are tied by tradition and our shared experience of Albany Law School. Thank you for your partnership.

Above all, alumni and friends contribute the financial resources that make possible the entire enterprise of Albany Law – supporting student prizes and scholarships, faculty, clinics and the Government Law Center, the library and physical plant. This year, we pushed the Albany Law Fund—the lifeblood of our annual operations—to new heights with our first Give Day 24—hour fundraiser held on Law Day, May 1, motivating more than 350 alumni, students, faculty and staff to give a total of $100,000 in only 24 hours. Thank you for giving to Albany Law. As Chairman, I speak for the Board of Trustees when I say that each of us loves this school and we want to do what is best for it. We pledge to make sure that it thrives. It is no secret that the legal landscape is changing. Running in place is not an option. With our new strategic plan in place, we have a commitment to excellence. Our model of opportunity pathways is fresh and forward—looking, and will prepare our students for the directions the profession is going, building their core competencies and guiding their professional development. We are looking at opportunities with great potential. We will continue to be a great law school. We will get the bar passage rate up. We will keep focusing on our historic strengths; we are proud of them. But the world is changing. We have the potential for some new and exciting synergies. We will always be Albany Law School, but we must look to a bold future and rise to new heights. With your continued partnership, we are confident we will do exactly that. Thank you again.

The Barrister Society recognizes leadership gifts to Albany Law School. These gifts make the greatest impact on the legal education we provide to our students. The Barrister Society levels are named for prominent members of the Albany Law School family whose history, service and philanthropy have shaped the institution Albany Law is today. The Barrister Society consists of six giving levels designed to recognize leadership gifts in a single fiscal year. The top four levels include donors of $1,000 or more. To encourage new and future graduates to support the school, we offer graduates of the last 10 years and current students membership in the Barrister Society at a reduced giving rate. The Justice David J. Brewer 1858 Society

Just as the position of dean is premier at Albany Law School, members of the Dean’s Cabinet are the premier donors to the institution in a given year. To honor their philanthropy, Deans Cabinet members are listed on a special plaque in the Board of Trustees conference room in the 2000 Building. The Dean’s Cabinet is distinguished by three giving levels:

Three years after graduating from Albany Law School, Justice Brewer began his distinguished career in public service. During his 20 years as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, his cases illustrated a strong commitment to the protection of individual liberties as well as international peace.

The Justice Robert H. Jackson 1912 Society

$5,000 - $9,999 Widely considered one of the greatest U.S. Supreme Court Justices in history, Justice Jackson also served as U.S. Attorney General and chief prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremburg World War II trials.

The Kate Stoneman 1898 Society

$1,000 - $2,499 Katherine “Kate” Stoneman 1898 was the first female graduate of Albany Law School and the first woman to be admitted to the New York State Bar. She was also a lifetime educator and renowned women’s rights suffragist. Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) As they strive to distinguish themselves in the legal community, young alumni continue to distinguish themselves through their giving to Albany Law School. Within the first 10 years after graduation, our young alumni may join the Kate Stoneman Society at a reduced rate. CLASSES OF 2005 - 2009 $500+

The Founders Clubs Although busy preparing to become the lawyers of the future, Albany Law School students recognize the need to invest in the law school. The Student Legacy Fund Program offers a vehicle for their philanthropy. Students in the classes of 2014, 2015 and 2016 who made a gift of $100 or more became members of the Student Barrister Society.

The Founders Clubs recognize alumni and friends who make gifts to Albany Law School between $100 and $999. Founders Clubs are named in memory of the three individuals who established the law school in 1851. These founding fathers understood the need to provide a place in New York’s capital city for the formal study of law. The Amos Dean Club

$500 – $999 Amos Dean was a graduate of Union College and one of the three founding fathers of Albany Law School. A noted educator, professor at Albany Law, and chair of medical jurisprudence at Albany Medical College, Dean later became the first president of the University of Iowa. The Ira Harris Club

$250 – $499 Ira Harris was a graduate of Union College and the second of the three founding fathers of the law school. In addition, he was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and a United States Senator. Harris spent the last eight years of his life as a professor at Albany Law School lecturing on equity jurisprudence. The Amasa Parker Club

$100 – $249 Amasa Parker was a graduate of Union College and the third of the founding fathers of the law school. At the time of its founding, Parker served as a member of the Court of Appeals. Considered a fair judge and a fine statesman, Parker also served the United States Congress

… It’s not just that Albany Law School gave me a chance, it’s not just that Albany Law School equipped me to be a good lawyer … I was well-equipped here. But I got that acceptance letter on April 15th. I opened it. And the first person I called to tell that I had been admitted to law school was my dad … I said, “Dad, this is great news! Albany Law School has accepted me. I’m going to law school.” My dad’s health was not great. And I could hear the fatigue in his voice. He said, “Well that’s great, I don’t know how we’ll do it, but we’ll find a way to pay for it.” The next day my dad had a massive heart attack and he died. … Albany Law School gave me the opportunity to ensure that when my dad left this world, he knew that his son was going to be a lawyer, and I will forever be grateful for that. In just a few minutes, someone from the Alumni Association is going to come up to this podium and he’s going to welcome you as members of the Alumni Association, and you are going to think about that, and… honestly, probably not think about it for very long. But you need to think about it – because this school gives people opportunity. So what you’re supposed to do, when you become a member of the Alumni Association, is you’re supposed to support the law school. So I’m leaving my support on the podium. ANNUAL FUND Give Day This year, we pushed the Annual Fund to new heights with our first Give Day 24-hour fundraising challenge, held on Law Day, May 1. Hosted primarily on social media via Facebook and Twitter, the campaign motivated more than 350 alumni, students, faculty and staff to give a total of $100,000 in only 24 hours. We proved once again that we are a community that can inspire when called upon. Thanks go to Bill Brewer ’77, for creating the matching challenge of $25,000.

HELEN WILKINSON MEMORIAL FUND

DALE VAN EPPS ’66 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Class of 1978 Reunion Class, led by John Conners, Dan Grossman and Dan Nolan, raised funds to establish the Helen Wilkinson Memorial Fund in honor of the beloved, longtime Albany Law School registrar. To remember her countless contributions to the Law School and to embody her spirit, the Wilkinson Fund will be used to grant emergency funds to students who experience difficulties because of health concerns or family emergencies, for example, or who need special assistance to pay for bar preparation courses, books, emergency living expenses, or other special needs.

Endowed by gifts from numerous friends and colleagues of the late Dale Van Epps ’66, and by a generous gift by his widow, Rillann Fuller Van Epps, this memorial scholarship recognizes Dale Van Epps’ lifelong relationship with Albany Law School and underscores his commitment to educational opportunities for future generations. It will provide scholarships to students who are residents of, or who attended schools, colleges or universities in the Finger Lakes and central New York state, where Mr. Van Epps lived and worked for many years as a pillar of its legal and real estate development communities. Additional gifts to the scholarship are welcome and most appreciated.

Often recalled as “the shadow dean,” Wilkinson was known to pull students aside to discuss their classes and teachers, grades, admission (in some cases, re-admission), financial aid and work study. She was also the one person at the law school many looked to for support in an emergency (usually money or family-related), who would help them through that crisis. The purpose of the Wilkinson Fund is to make an impact on today’s students in the way Helen Wilkinson did. The Class of 1978 goal was to raise $150,000 over a two-year period, and as they near their goal, additional gifts are welcome. THE STEVEN V. DEBRACCIO ’13 COMMENCEMENT PRIZE FOR AN OUTSTANDING TEACHING ASSISTANT

Established by Steven V. DeBraccio, co-salutatorian of the Class of 2013, a six-time Teaching Assistant, and Managing Editor of the Albany Law Review, this award honors the commitment of the graduating student who has served as the most outstanding teaching assistant throughout his or her law school career. Selected by members of the student body, the award is the first of its kind at Albany Law School to recognize the contribution teaching assistants play in the academic success of our students.

Bridging the Gap Mentoring Program Bridging the Gap Mentoring Program is an initiative of the National Alumni Association (NAA), Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) and the Office of Alumni Affairs. It assists third-year students by matching them one-on-one with alumni mentors who provide general advice on the post-graduation landscape covering everything from job search and interviewing tips to Bar exam prep, making introductions for graduates moving to a new location for work, and general advice for new attorneys. Once matched, mentors and students are free to communicate informally via e-mail, telephone, and/or in person.
