THE REPORT OF GIFTS ACKNOWLEDGES THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF CONTRIBUTORS TO ALBANY LAW SCHOOL DURING JULY 1, 2011–JUNE 30, 2012. EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO ENSURE ACCURACY OF OUR DONOR LISTINGS. WE REGRET ANY ERROR OR OMISSION. FOR QUESTIONS, CONTACT KAREN WEATHERWAX, COORDINATOR OF DONOR STEWARDSHIP, AT 518-445-3275.

It is my pleasure to share with you the 2011-12 Albany Law School Annual Report of Gifts. Reviewing these pages reinforces my decision to come to Albany Law School as your new President and Dean. The strength of this law school’s alumni network is a tangible expression of pride in the institution. During these challenging times in legal education, it is the support of alumni, community members, corporations, foundations, and friends that makes this a special place and one that will have the resources to meet these challenges. Although my time at Albany Law has been short, just over three months, I see the impact of your financial support every day as I walk the halls. We have beautiful facilities that provide state-of-the-art space for our law students to be inspired and challenged. Our moot court rooms, law review offices, technology-enhanced classrooms, nationally ranked library, and Law Clinic & Justice Center provide our students the best tools for the rigors of law school, ensuring they develop the skills needed to excel in the legal profession today. Our students are at the heart of everything we do. We make every effort to attract the best and brightest students to Albany Law School, and that is only possible with your support. An ever-growing endowment – standing at approximately $40 million – provides a foundation upon which we can offer competitive scholarships. In addition, Albany Law School’s Annual Fund, which reached over $1 million for the third year in a row, augments that support ensuring that the class we admit not only benefits from the legal education we provide, but also enhances our academic community. This year, we decided that your investment in the law school would be better served by offering you this electronic version of the Report of Gifts rather than a bound paper copy that costs more than $20,000 to produce. Those savings will be added to our financial aid budget this year, bringing our total scholarship support for our students to $5.2 million. If you would prefer to receive a print out of the digital report, please let us know.

ALBANY LAW IN NEW YORK’S CAPITAL. KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Thank you for all you do: for your financial investment in Albany Law School, for your mentoring and hiring of our graduates, for your involvement in our classrooms as adjunct professors and as guest lecturers, for your service in our moot court and pro bono programs, and for your referrals of potential students. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you as we host alumni receptions and bring you back to campus. With gratitude,

PENELOPE (PENNY) ANDREWS | PRESIDENT & DEAN

GIVING LEVELS

THE BARRISTER SOCIETY The Barrister Society recognizes leadership gifts to Albany Law School. These gifts make the greatest impact on the legal education we provide to our students. The Barrister Society levels are named for prominent members of the Albany Law School family whose history, service and philanthropy have shaped the institution Albany Law is today. The Barrister Society consists of six giving levels designed to recognize leadership gifts in a single fiscal year. The top four levels include donors of $1,000 or more. Recent graduates of the last 10 years, as well as current students, have the opportunity to join the Barrister Society at a reduced giving rate. THE DEAN’S CABINET $10,000 AND ABOVE

Just as the position of dean is premier at Albany Law School, members of the Dean’s Cabinet are the premier donors to the institution in a given year. To honor their philanthropy, Dean’s Cabinet members are listed on a special plaque in the Board of Trustees conference room in the 2000 Building. The Dean’s Cabinet is subdivided into three giving levels: DEAN’S CABINET PLATINUM CIRCLE | $50,000 AND ABOVE DEAN’S CABINET GOLD CIRCLE | $25,000 - $49,999 DEAN’S CABINET SILVER CIRCLE | $10,000 - $24,999

THE JUSTICE ROBERT H. JACKSON 1912 SOCIETY $5,000 - $9,999

Widely considered one of the greatest Supreme Court Justices in history, Justice Jackson also served as U.S. Attorney General and chief prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremburg World War II trials. Donors who give to Albany Law School at this level recognize the need to perpetuate Justice Jackson’s legacy ensuring that today’s law students receive the best education possible. THE JUSTICE DAVID J. BREWER 1858 SOCIETY $2,500 - $4,999

Just three years after graduating from Albany Law School, Justice Brewer began his distinguished career in public service. During his 20-year service as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, his cases illustrated a strong commitment to the protection of individual liberties as well as international peace. Donors at the Brewer level also show their commitment to supporting Albany Law School students in their legal endeavors. THE KATE STONEMAN 1898 SOCIETY $1,000 - $2,499

Katherine “Kate” Stoneman was the first female graduate of Albany Law School in 1898 and the first female to be admitted into the New York State Bar. She was also a lifetime educator and renowned women’s rights suffragist. Donors to the Kate Stoneman Society idealize the values of Kate Stoneman as a pioneer in the field of law and help provide students with the resources to do the same.

As they strive to distinguish themselves in the legal community, young alumni continue to distinguish themselves through their giving to Albany Law School. Within the first 10 years after graduation, our young alumni may join the Kate Stoneman Society at a reduced rate. CLASSES OF 2002-2006: $500+ CLASSES OF 2007-2011: $250+

STUDENT BARRISTER SOCIETY

Although busy preparing to become the lawyers of the future, Albany Law School students recognize the need to invest in the law school’s future. The Student Legacy Fund Program offers a vehicle for their philanthropic endeavors. Students in the classes of 2012, 2013 and 2014 who made a gift of $100 or more became members of the Student Barrister Society.

THE FOUNDERS CLUBS The Founders Clubs recognize alumni and friends who make gifts to Albany Law School between $100 and $999. Founders Clubs are named in memory of Amos Dean, Ira Harris and Amasa Parker, the three individuals who established the law school in 1851. These founding fathers understood the need to provide a place in the Albany area to formally study law. THE AMOS DEAN CLUB $500-$999

Ira Harris was a graduate of Union College and a founding father of the law school. In addition, he was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and a United States Senator. Harris spent the last eight years of his life as a professor at Albany Law School lecturing on equity jurisprudence.

DEAN’S COUNCIL OF FIRMS

The Dean’s Council of Firms is comprised of law firms with three or more Albany Law School alumni who support Albany Law School through the Law Firm Giving Program. Members promote continued excellence in legal education through financial support. Gifts of every size are welcome and come directly from the alumni employed by the firm, not the firm itself. Members of the Dean’s Council of Firms provide key support for faculty, students and programs, strengthen alumni ties within the firm, and raise the alumni giving participation rate. Special thanks to Trustee Jim Hacker, Chair of the Firm Giving Program, for his support. OVERALL WINNERS

STUDENT LEGACY PROGRAM

The Student Legacy Program, which was initiated in 2008 at the suggestion of members of the Class of 2010, provides students with a vehicle for fundraising for their class gift beginning in their first year at the law school. Our students have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of financial support for the continued success of Albany Law School and its programs. The following are students who participated in the Student Legacy Fund with their financial support as well as those who gave generously of their time serving as Legacy Fund Trustees. CLASS OF 2012

NEW ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Endowed gifts provide funding in perpetuity for crucial needs such as scholarships, professorships, fellowships, prizes and special programs. In 2011-2012, the following new endowed funds were established: THE JUSTICE ANTHONY V. CARDONA ’70 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Albany Law School Board of Trustees established the scholarship to honor the legacy of Justice Cardona. In addition to gifts from members of the Board of Trustees, many donations were received from the judge’s family, friends and colleagues. In keeping with the spirit of Justice Cardona’s life, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who displays a strong sense of citizenship, spirit and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the legal profession and to society. THE EQUALITY & JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

2011 + 2012 REPORT OF GIFTS

44

Established by Mark Siemens ’91 in memory of his husband and best friend, Matthew J. Crawford, the Equality & Justice Scholarship, the first of its kind at the law school, will be awarded to a student who has shown academic success and a commitment to equal rights and justice for the LGBTQ community, and who has demonstrated an intent to promote the rights of the LGBTQ community in the practice of law. PATRICIA E. SALKIN, ESQ. ’88 GOVERNMENT LAW CENTER PRIZE

After serving as director of the Government Law Center for nearly 20 years, Patricia Salkin left Albany Law School to assume the position of dean at Touro Law School on Long Island. To honor her and to celebrate her legacy, the Government Law Center Prize has been renamed the Patricia E. Salkin, Esq. ’88 Government Law Center Prize. This award is presented to graduates who have

participated in the Government Law Center and demonstrated a commitment to law and public policy with a potential for distinction in those areas. STONE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

Christine G. Stone ’81, a member of the Albany Law School Board of Trustees, and her husband, David Stone, established the Stone Family Scholarship in 2011, the year their son, Jason, graduated from the law school. Recognizing Albany Law’s 160-year tradition of honoring students and their family members who are also alumni, the Stone family generously endowed this scholarship which will be awarded annually to legacy students. THE WANN FAMILY PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS LAW AND LITIGATION

In 2012, the Wann Family Foundation established a commencement prize which will be awarded annually. In even-numbered years, the prize will be given to the student with the highest grade point average in the business law concentration and, in odd-numbered years, to the graduate with the highest grade point average in litigation. THE WINIFRED R. WIDMER ’54 SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by a gift from Winifred R. Widmer ’54 who supports the vision of Albany Law School to provide financial assistance to the most capable students pursuing the study of law. It will be awarded annually to a student in good academic standing, with preference given to a female.

SCHOLARSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS

In the 2011-2012 academic year, Albany Law School made $6 million in scholarship awards. This support is funded by alumni, friends and other sources. The Board of Trustees established awards for entering students honoring Justice Kenneth S. MacAffer, former chairman of the Board; former deans Andrew V. Clements, Harold D. Alexander, J. Newton Fiero and Samuel M. Hesson; and Justice Isadore Bookstein, lecturer and former trustee. Dean’s scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic promise as demonstrated by an applicant’s undergraduate grade point average and score on the LSAT. Diversity scholarships support students with unusual backgrounds including those who have been historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Additional endowed, named scholarships are awarded according to provisions established in agreement between the donor and the law school. Fellowships and assistantships are also available for eligible students.
