ART INSPIRES AND CHALLENGES
Thought-provoking art was at the forefront this spring as patrons came out to take in exhibitions of sculpture by Glenn Dasher, kinetic art by Justin Hodges and images of Inspired Albany by local photographers. A panel discussion also provided audience members with a chance to participate in the exploration of the age-old question of What Is Art?

Reflecting on the unique urban and rural communities of the Southland and the personalities who inhabit our landscape, these painters capture stories, moments and local cultural histories. ART ROSENBAUM Art Rosenbaum is a painter, muralist and illustrator, as well as a collector and performer of traditional American folk music. He earned his AB in Art History and his MFA in Painting at Columbia University. The octogenarian has worked in France on a Fulbright in Painting. MICHELLE FONTAINE Michelle Fontaine explores paint as a language to communicate themes of public gathering spaces. Playing with the look of mid-century American popular culture, lush with patterns and perspective, she investigates places and people as they share the painted landscape. Large-scale, expressive and colorful, her collage narrative storylines are layered to build dynamic compositions. After attending schools in Chicago, Atlanta and New York City, Michelle has completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Concentration in Painting at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia. She has shown around the state of Georgia in a variety of venues. Michelle Fontaine, Fantasmic, 2015, Oil on wood pane, 35.5” x 30”
Terry Rowlett, The Pilgrim’s Progress, 2011, oil on canvas, 37" x 54"
TERRY ROWLETT Terry Rowlett uses magical realism to create scenes of ordinary people and places that seem extraordinary. Contemporary subjects combined with mythological narratives and compositions create otherworldly feelings. Rowlett received his MFA from the UGA and is involved in the art, music and writing scenes that spring from Athens.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS GLENN DASHER: IN RETROSPECTION MONUMENTS TO HUMAN IMPERFECTION Haley Gallery | Through June 16 Glenn Dasher’s unique interpretation of the changing meaning of monuments that people create to immortalize an individual or event continues through mid-June. Dasher’s thought-provoking work is described by the artist, a former dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Alabama in Hunstville, as surreal, playful and iconoclastic monuments that present pseudohistorical statuary fragments within an altered and improbable conceptual context.
JUSTIN HODGES: TIME TIME AND A HALF East Gallery | Through July 14 In his installation, Georgia artist Justin Hodges, a lecturer at Georgia Southwestern State University, reimagines through kinetic sculpture, stone and digital photography, The Stonebreakers, a 19th century painting by Gustauve Courbet. Hodges’ installation projects Courbet’s work into today’s world, investigating the value of labor and provoking reconsideration of the bottom line.

LOVING VINCENT OUTDOOR SHOWING SET FOR AMA
The Night Café scene in Loving Vincent features Robin Hodges as Arles Lt Milliet and Douglas Booth as Armand Roulin. (Photo courtesy of Loving Vincent)
While films have long been regarded as art, Loving Vincent, a movie being presented Friday, June 8 at the Albany Museum of Art, takes the art of movie-making to an entirely new level. The Oscar-nominated film, brought to the AMA by the Albany Recreation & Parks Department through its summer film series, comprises 65,000 frames individually painted in oils—a cinematic first. Loving Vincent, which brings the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh to life, will be shown outdoors, projected onto the wall of the AMA. Set to start at sunset, the film is rated PG-13. There’s no admission charge and you’re invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and tables. Food trucks and a cash beer and wine bar will be available, so no coolers will be permitted. The AMA and its current exhibitions, Glenn Dasher: In Retrospection; Monuments to Human Imperfection and Justin Hodges’ Time Time and a Half, will reopen at 7:30 pm. Officials with the film note that 125 professional artists from across the globe traveled to the Loving Vincent studios in Greece and Poland to be part of the production about the life of one of the world’s most famous and enigmatic artists. His passionate, ill-fated life and mysterious death are as remarkable as his brilliant paintings. Van Gogh’s life has become a thing of legend as he has
been described as everything from a layabout and a madman to a martyr and a genius. His own view, as he attested in his final letter, was, “We cannot speak other than by our paintings. ” The creators of Loving Vincent took the tragic artist at his word, bringing him to life by enabling his artwork to tell his story on screen. Loving Vincent was first shot as a live-action film with actors. It was then hand-painted over in oils, frame by frame. The result is a unique interaction of live performers and painting animators. Loving Vincent was produced by BreakThru Films and Trademark Films. Run time for Loving Vincent, which opened in the United States in September 2017, is 94 minutes. The film received an Oscar nomination earlier this year for Best Animated Feature Film. We give special thanks to the city of Albany for bringing this beautiful film to the AMA.

SUPPER SERIES TAKES SEASONAL APPROACH Diners at Starry Starry Night on May 5, 2018 featuring cuisine by Albany Chef John Gargano at a poolside setting at the home of Amy Jones, celebrate the evening.
The Albany Museum of Art’s popular Art of Fine Dining Culinary Series will open its fourth season in November, with emphasis on farm to table. The dinners will take place in each of the four seasons, with menus that are inspired by local produce and food that are fresh and vibrant in that season. The first will be on Nov. 3, 2018 taking full advantage of the autumn harvest before the heavy holiday period begins. The second dinner is scheduled for New Year’s Eve, bringing 2018 to an end on a delicious note. Spring 2019 will be in full bloom when it is complemented by a rejuvenating April 6, 2019 dinner. And shortly after the nation celebrates its 243rd birthday with fireworks, diners will celebrate with equally sparkling summer fare on July 18, 2019. Planning is continuing for the dinners that will be prepared by celebrity chefs, but Staci Willson, co-chair of the AMA’s Supper Series
Committee, says the dates will allow the chefs to take advantage of local food that is in season. “We’re making it more about the local food movement,” Willson said. “We’re moving toward finding local seasonal produce and food that are fresh and vibrant. Tomatoes are so beautiful in the summer. Root vegetables are wonderful in the winter. We can use the spring bounty and the (fall) harvest.”
Chef John Gargano and Jerry Perez prepare filet mignon for guests at Starry Starry Night on May 5 at the home of Amy Jones.
These days, Willson noted, people want to know where their food originates. The AMA committee wanted to incorporate that trend into the dinner series. “It’s all part of moving back toward nature. It’s just so cool,” Willson said. “When you focus on it (the season), it’s so beautiful what you can do.” Season tickets and tickets for individual dinners will be on sale in time for the AMA’s first Chalk Fest, set for September 22 on the 100 block of Pine Avenue.
Diners enjoy the Jet Setter dinner on March 10 under cafe lights in the private jet hangar at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport.

ARTIST DATEBOOK As we work toward relocating the Albany Museum of Art downtown, we’re also eagerly anticipating the return of the AMA’s permanent collection, which has been in conservation and storage since the devastating storm of January 2, 2017. This summer, two artists whose works are included in the AMA permanent collection—and the subject of one of those artists—have birth or death anniversaries.
Andy Warhol, Condensed Tomato Soup, serigraph on shopping bag, 86.008.023, gift of Marilyn and Ivan C. Karp
Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) Andy Warhol, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native was a leading figure in the pop art movement as he explored the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertising. His best-known works include two produced in 1962—Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Diptych. His New York studio, dubbed The Factory, was a gathering place for a wide mix from intellectuals and playwrights to Bohemian street folk and Hollywood celebrities. Warhol also was a director and producer. His dozen works in the AMA collection include a group of hand-colored flowers, Condensed Tomato Soup and Miss Lillian. Reginald Marsh, Street Girl (c. 1953), oil, 99.005.001, gift of Retired Albany Physicians
Lillian Carter (August 15, 1898 – October 30, 1983)
Reginald Marsh (March 14, 1898 - July 3, 1954) A native of Paris known for his depictions of New York in the Roaring ‘20s and Depression era ‘30s, Reginald Marsh captured scenes of social realism such as Coney Island beaches, vaudeville and burlesque shows, and jobless men on the Bowery in egg tempra, oils, watercolor, ink and ink washes, and prints. His notable works include Breadline, Girl on Merry Go Round, Pip and Flip and Striptease at New Gotham. His oil painting Street Girl (c. 1953) was given to the AMA by the Retired Physicians of Albany.
Andy Warhol, Miss Lillian, (c. 1977), serigraph on paper, 89.006.001, gift of Tom Beard
Andy Warhol is known for his images of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger, but in 1977 he created a silkscreen print of a wellknown Southwest Georgian—Lillian Carter, mother of former President Jimmy Carter. Warhol produced the print of Miss Lillian to raise money for Carter’s presidential campaign. Lillian Carter was politically active before, during, and after her son’s presidency.
