Fun Learning Mandarin

AGES 8–12

AGES 1–8

For the reluctant writer to the enthusiastic, this intensive writing program is designed to strengthen students' abilities to express themselves through the written word with special emphasis on skill-building (mechanics, editing, spelling). Small, cooperative, fun classes will focus on various writing strategies from pre-writing and organizing ideas to drafting, revising and publishing a class magazine. The series is cumulative and will build on previous lessons.

Through stories, music, movement, games, art and hands-on activities you will find that Mandarin is such an easy language to learn. Children are immersed in a relaxed and fun atmosphere with our native Mandarin teacher in a small group and learn Mandarin naturally through play. No prior Mandarin experience is necessary for either children or adults. Kids ages 3–8 attend drop-off "Kids Only" classes and must be potty trained. Class curriculum designed by Po-Wen Chen and taught by New Sprouts instructor. $30 material fee paid to the instructor.

World Literature

The Lives of American Women Writers

AGES 50–OLDER

AGES 50–OLDER

Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. We move at snail’s pace over puzzling and intriguing passages, emphasizing language, structure, method and implicit meanings. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say.

Elaine Showalter’s A Jury of Her Peers illuminates the lives of American women writers, from the first woman novelist to produce a bestseller here (1794) to Annie Proulx. Our in-class readings and candid discussions are enriching and enjoyable.

AGES 50–OLDER

This lyrical novel takes place in Tokyo and Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. The Painting dramatizes the hard choices facing its four main characters and evokes the profound call to create art. Class members will read chapters at home and discuss them together. DATE

Memoir Writing Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed.

Greacian Goeke is a certified Orff-Schulwerk movement and music instructor who has worked as a teaching artist with all ages since 1989. She also directs a storytelling program at Stagebridge Senior Theatre Company in Oakland. “I believe everyone's creative spark deserves a place to unfold, and movement is such a powerful tool for expression and health,” Greacian states. In her Friday morning class, Freeing the Dancer Within, participants enjoy simple patterns such as the Brain Dance and invent free movement to world and classical music. “All you need is a desire to move,” Greacian says, “No special ability. Dance as you are is our motto.” Class members are delighted to discover their dancing selves: “I am dancing around the house to music, after years of sitting!” "This class is an antidote to depression.” “It’s a place of total acceptance and freedom.” Greacian warmly invites you to join this spirited community of movement adventurers.

k a n n a ao k i i llu m i n at i n g t h e m u n da n e July 9–October 3 Albany Community Center Foyer Both the rural and urban landscape reveal remnants of the past and ironies of the present, providing a framework for exploring feelings of nostalgia, solitude, tragedy and grace. I am often awestruck by the the quality of light, color, and compositional structure in a moment of everyday life. These are the moments I wish to capture in my work. With camera in hand, I take snapshots of fleeting pieces of time and space, and return to the studio to paint. I start with a warm colored ground so that even cool paintings of oceans or highways retain a sense of warmth. Working in oil, I paint ‘wet on wet’, allowing colors to merge and commingle while preserving the spontaneity of brushstrokes. A sense of presence in daily life combined with a passion for color and light, I paint to convey a mood, engender a quiet energy, to illuminate the mundane.

His camera goes everywhere he does, whether it’s to Japan or for a walk along the East Bay shoreline. He creates images that highlight contrasts in ordinary surroundings, and uses photo techniques which expose infrared light to enhance those differences. Jim says, “I like how a little infrared light helps me see with new eyes.” Loose Banner, black & white infrared photo

Bring one bag or more of your washed, gently worn items (men's, women's, maternity, plus size and children's clothing) and be admitted to our fabulous swap room where clothing will be set out by type (pants, skirts, shirts, blouses, etc.). Choose items and take them home. There won't be a dressing room or mirrors, but you can try things on over your clothes and meet your neighbors and ask them for fashion advice! All sizes welcome.

Dinner Swap & Social August 8, September 19, October 10 6:30 pm Albany Community Center Busy schedules can make cooking a wholesome nightly dinner for your family difficult, if not impossible. Join together with your neighbors to swap meals and feed the whole family for three nights! Here's how it works: you bring three family-sized portions of one homemade main course in containers, and three copies of your recipe with instructions for freezing/reheating. (You should make enough of your recipe to feed three families of four people, or 12 total portions.) Meals should be freezable, reheatable, or able to last four days in the refrigerator. We’ll provide snacks and a wine tasting. Socialize with your neighbors, snack, and have a glass of wine. Fill your three empty containers with three different meals, then forget about cooking for a few days! RSVP: Robin Mariona (510) 524-9283, rmariona@albanyca.org
