’Bye weeds,‘Hi’seeds! Have a green thumb but no place to show it off? Does your neighbor have an overgrown backyard? Why not get together and start a Yard Share? What is a Yard Share? People with yards get together with people who love to garden, and share the harvest. Curious? Check out Transition Albany’s map of gardens at transitionalbany.org/garden-sharing-in-albany or consider starting your own Yard Share map at hyperlocavore.com. Need help getting things to grow? Sign up for our new Urban Food Gardener Series (see page 24). Share and exchange your extra fruits and veggies with neighbors or at Albany’s Local Garden Swap on Tuesday evenings starting May 31 (see page 46).

how might albany create a stronger, safer, more vibrant community where democracy works at a local level?

Getting to know one’s neighbors is a start. When neighbors interact— whether through block parties, home-garden produce sharing, or book club meetings—connections are formed between people and trust is built. Such social capital can lead to a stronger, safer community, a community where its members have a greater sense of belonging.

Chess Camp for Youth

Kids’ Carpentry Camp

Ages 8–12

Ages 6–12

Ages 5–12

Kids work on a crew to create an animated film. With the guidance of professional filmmakers young students decide how they will create their characters (construction paper cut outs, Lego® figures, action Figures, etc.) and imagine, plan, shoot and edit their own films.

The Torres Chess and Music Academy, a 501c (3) nonprofit organization, is pleased to be running a very special chess camp designed by Chris Torres, instructor of the 2009 national championship team. This camp will feature instructors with decades of chess teaching experience in a format that is fun, competitive and educational. Students with no experience and all levels are welcome. Note: One week pre-registration prior to camp start date required.

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. They are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety, and craftsmanship. Projects include supertops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird-feeders and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year round with different projects offered each session. Our motto is: “Building confidence and teaching with respect and humor in a safe and happy environment.”

Learning to See: How to Take Better Photographs With Any Camera A d u lt

Are you disappointed with the snapshots you take? Do you keep your camera on “P” or “auto” because you’re intimidated by the creative settings on your digital camera? This class will explore fundamental principals of photography that will help you see and take better images. We’ll demystify ISO, aperture, shutter speed and the histogram so you can get the shots you want! Please note: This class will not address the buttons and dials on your specific camera-that’s right, you still need to read the manual. DATE

Dorothy Brown has lived in Albany for over twenty years. She can often be seen around town with her camera. She worked with the Historical Society and the Library on the Albany at 100 Project for the city’s centennial and is currently a regular contributor of photo essays to Albany Patch. Dorothy is also a portrait photographer.. In this class, Dorothy will show that there are lots of ways to improve your photography that don’t involve buying expensive equipment. The most important elements of good photography are learning how to see light and background and what makes a good composition. Students will learn to venture into the creative zones of their cameras with a better understanding of exposure and how to read a histogram. Whether you are interested in travel photography or taking better pictures of your children, this class will help you see in a new way.

Memoir Writing A & B ages 50–older

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. Memoir Writing A ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

ages 50–older

ages 50–older

ages 50–older

Learn the basics of ethnic handwork (embroidery, appliqué, reverse appliqué, piecing, etc.) and then turn this knowledge into wearable art or something unique for your home. Recycle a jean jacket or pants and by adding embroidery and/or appliqué you have a “hot” looking casual garment. Make one-of-a-kind pillows, tote or hand bag, wall hanging, kimono, etc. Visit the first class wherein you may start, for process, a small project and bring along at least 5 coordinating pieces of plain and print fabric, dressmaker pins, a yard of unbleached muslin and sharp scissors. Beginning and advanced students welcome.

A basic class wherein you can work in any media you choose, be it oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, collage, wood/linoleum block and/or any combination thereof. Emphasis is on design, composition, texture and style (abstract, folk, realistic). Tools and equipment will be discussed during the first class including what and where to buy brushes, paint, support, etc. Bring to first class those art supplies you may have on hand as well as a drawing pad and a drawing tool of your choice (pencil, charcoal, pen, crayons, etc.). No art or drawing experience can be an asset.

Sculpture made simple! No kiln, chisels, marble, welding required! Using the ages old process of papier-mâché, create almost anything from beads and bracelets to full-size figures from recycled newspaper, cardboard, paste, paint and a little ingenuity. Come to the first class and start, for process, a small project to see if this is right for you. Bring along newspaper, cardboard, scissors, wire all the way around coat hanger and 1” wide masking tape. Beginning and advanced students welcome.

Len Blau began developing his passion for photography in 1979, while teaching psychology at Chabot College in Hayward. He became an active member of the Berkeley Camera Club, and his photographs won many Camera Club awards. In 1984, he began to show his work in venues outside of Berkeley, including Point Reyes Station, San Luis Obispo, and New York. One of his photographs was part of a two-year traveling exhibit through the Mesa Art Center, in Mesa, Arizona. His most recent accolade, besides being selected to have a solo show at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library, has been that one his photographs was selected from a pool of 1800 photographs from 23 countries to be part of a show in Half Moon Bay this past April. Len lives in Berkeley with his wife Diane, and the family dog, Mango. He has two grown children and a son in college. Blau says, “To me, photography is like visual travel. New and changing perceptions are very exciting. Light is the crucial element that makes a photograph work. I find the interaction of forms, shapes and light to be particularly interesting. By reversing highlight and shadow, forms and shapes emerge and become very graphic and abstract. Light is projected, not reflected. Structures appear to be lit from within.” upcoming show K anna Aoki I llu m i n at i n g t h e M u n da n e

Clean out your closets and bring your wearable-but-unwanted clothing to the Community Center where you can rummage through everyone else's wearable-but-unwanted items and find a fabulous new-to-you winter wardrobe! Bring one bag or more of your washed, gently worn items (men's, women's, maternity, plus size and children's clothing) and be admitted to our fabulous swap room where clothing will be set out by type (pants, skirts, shirts, blouses, etc.). Choose items and take them home. There won't be a dressing room or mirrors, but you can try things on over your clothes and meet your neighbors and ask them for fashion advice! All sizes welcome.

Dinner Swap & Social Monday, April 25, 7 pm (RSVP by April 18, 2011) Beginning in June Dinner Swap will take place on the 2nd Monday of each Month! (June 13, July 11, August 8) Albany Community Center, Hall & Kitchen Busy schedules can make cooking a wholesome nightly dinner for your family difficult, if not impossible. Join together with your neighbors to swap meals and feed the whole family for three nights! Here's how it works: you bring three family-sized portions of one homemade main course, three empty containers, and three copies of your recipe with instructions for freezing/reheating. (You should make enough of your recipe to feed three families of four people, or 12 total portions.) Meals should be freezable, reheatable, or able to last four days in the refrigerator. We’ll provide snacks and a wine tasting. Socialize with your neighbors, snack, and have a glass of wine. Fill your three empty containers with three different meals, then forget about cooking for a few days! RSVP: Robin Mariona (510) 524-9283, rmariona@albanyca.org

Sudde n Oak Death S ur vey

Upco m ing P l anting Events

Saturday, April 30 & Sunday, May 1

9 am–1 pm Saturday, April 9: Albany Senior Center Saturday, April 30: Sudden Oak Death Survey Sunday, May 1: Sudden Oak Death Survey Saturday, May 7: Memorial Park Saturday, May 14: Ocean View Park

Sudden Oak Death, a fungus-like mold that is ravaging coastal California's beautiful live oaks, is now fairly widespread in regional parks from El Sobrante to Oakland. The disease is carried on many host plants, spread is fitful but inexorable, and there is no cure. However, some things can be done to slow the spread and protect high-value or high-risk trees, for example in parks or near homes. Working with UC Berkeley's Dr. Matteo Garbelotto and the California Oak Mortality Task Force, community organizations including Berkeley Partners for Parks, Friends of Five Creeks, and Garber Park Stewards are seeking volunteers for a "blitz" survey of infected host plants - mainly California bay laurels. Volunteers can sign up at http://sodblitz.eventzilla.net. For more information about the survey, or if your group is interested in surveying a specific park or neighborhood, please contact f5creeks@aol.com or (510) 848-8358. If you think you have an infected oak on your property, check out the Garbelotto lab's free treatment-training sessions (http://www. cnr.berkeley.edu/garbelotto/english/index.php). If the April 30-May 1 blitz doesn't work for you, but you have an iphone and want to help add to knowledge of this plague, check out www.oakmapper.org. Cit y w i d e Garag e Sale Saturday, May 14 • 9 am–3 pm Too much old stuff? Need space in your garage? Host a garage sale! Registration fee is $10 due by noon on Friday, April 29. Participants will be included in promotional event map. For more information contact Environmental Resources at (510) 528-5760 or by email greenalbany@albanyca.org.

The garden consists of 20 plots: 16 community plots, 2 ADA plots, 1 Ocean View School plot and 1 Friendship Club plot. We have one ADA vacancy at this time. The yearly non-refundable fee is $60.00 per year. At present, there is a waiting list of several would be gardeners. The Ocean View Community Organic Garden Steering Committee consists of Jackie Hermes-Fletcher, Judith Heller, Sandra Beckely and Will Moore. The committee oversees garden needs, treasury, interests of the plot holders, guideline enforcement, meeting agendas, an ongoing mural project, work parties and promotion of garden community events. Look on the bulletin boards at the Community Center or outside the Garden for upcoming events.
