Ag es 4 5 – 70
What goals would transform the quality of your life? It could be something big like changing careers, or something important like finding more balance in your life, or feeding your soul by doing something creative. It could be something that seems mundane, yet still important like cleaning out your closets or finishing that half-started knitting project. Do you find yourself thinking about it, getting distracted by the never-ending demands on your time, and putting it off? Six months later, do you find yourself in the same place? Achieving your goals requires that you take the Next Step that gets you one step closer to your goal. Once completed, you take another Next Step, then another. The cumulative effect of taking Next Steps is reaching your goal! Aimee Haire is originally from Louisiana, took up line dancing after moving to California 12 years ago. She loved the physical grace and improved sense of balance that she developed in the low stress setting. With the encouragement of her instructor, Aimee began teaching classes 4 years ago. Students comment that Aimee makes class fun with her patient approach and outgoing personality. Many students sign up for repeated sessions after discovering how much they enjoy the exercise and challenge of learning new dances. Aimee either finds or records videos of dance walkthroughs on Youtube (look for her channel “aimeeinelcerrito”) to help her students practice, and she also encourages students by keeping in touch via email during the week. She selects music for her class from many different genres including country, pop, rock, and Latin. Aimee is a business manager during the day and lives in El Cerrito with her partner Jesse, their dog Stella, and their cat Trolli.

Think of sculpture as a brain exercise. Papier-mache sculpture is a fun way to experiment with a people friendly art form. At the same time exercise and keep fit both sides of your brain, especially the right hemisphere, the creative and making-art side of the brain. Although not necessary, if you enjoy using your hands, like solving problems, puzzles and/ or play games, you are in the right place. Materials needed for papier-mache are cheap, some recycled and simple everyday tools which free you up to experiment and have fun without the cost factor. You can for instance, cut off pieces of your sculpture you don’t like, add something else and let your imagination soar. At the first class bring newspaper, scissors, a roll of one-inch masking tape (not glue) and pen/ pencil. You will receive instructions and tips on construction and walk out of the class with one of two learning pieces of sculpture. The two exercises provide you with the basics for you future creations, be they miniature or life size, realistic or abstract. A complete material list will be available at the first class. Come give it a try, make new friends, keep your whole brain mentally active and have fun.

Dorothy Parker was remarkable for the range of her fiction-from witty satires to compassionate and moving stories. We will read The Portable Dorothy Parker, published by Penguin Books with an introduction by Brendan Gill.
Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. We move at snail’s pace over puzzling and intriguing passages, emphasizing language, structure, method and implicit meanings. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say.

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. L a r ry Va n D e u s e n Th e Pa i n t i n g i s t h e Sto ry July 7–October 1 Albany Community Center Foyer I use the collage method for the compositions of my paintings. I look to many sources, new and old, to create a contemporary blend of images. I think of these layered paintings as a metaphor for the modern world, where at some level everything is connected to everything else. I have a degree in Sculpture from the State University of California, I have shown extensively in Art galleries in America, Europe and Japan, and my work can be found in many private and public collections. Shop local for all of your Dinner with Albany items! Solano Avenue is a local treasure with the charm of a small town and an unmatched array of restaurants and retail establishments – including professional and personal services. Where else can you find a larger collection of independently-owned “mom and pop” enterprises? Where else can you find such a dynamic range of services and get so many things done in one area? Where else can you find a more culturally rich group of businesses with owners from all over the map? Nowhere… It’s on Solano. Before you rush-off to the mall this holiday season, think of Solano first. We may not have the glitz of your local shopping center, but we have the lasting spirit of “small business” and that counts for double. Thank you for your continuing support of Solano Avenue!

The Friends of Albany Parks programprovides volunteer opportunities for community groups and citizens to contribute to the beautification and maintenance of Albany's parks. The program also promotes community partnerships with residents and/or Albany organizations that enhances civic pride and a sense of stewardship. The program is designed to be an informal approach to involve the community with minor maintenance and beautification projects as well as monitor parks for potential hazards and vandalism. Email the Recreation & Community Services Department at recinfo@albanyca.org, or visit the City’s website, www.albanyca.org/volunteer, for more information and an application.
Want to get your hands dirty while helping to keep the City beautiful? We are looking for individuals or groups interested in volunteering to weed and mulch specific areas of the City’s green spaces. Your commitment will be for one year and you will set your own work schedule. There will be an initial meeting with City Arborist, Tony Wolcott to review his vision for your specific area. You must provide your own tools and remove all plant debris from your area. Email the Recreation & Community Services Department @ recinfo@albanyca.org, or visit the City’s website, www.albanyca.org/volunteer, for more information and an application. Annual Coastal Clean UP
Join A lbany 's Gr een Team
Saturday, September 15, 2012 • 9 am–noon
The Volunteer Corps Green Team's mission is to assist City staff and other organizations in increasing wildlife habitat and Albany residents’ opportunities to find nature within city limits. Additional outcomes of its work are strengthened community relationships, fun activities for its members and a more beautiful city! The Green Team is self-led, meaning that its members themselves decide on activities for the group, thus allowing for different levels of leadership and participation. The City of Albany’s Environmental Resources Division and Recreation and Community Service Department support the Green Team with guidance, contacts, and tools and materials for certain projects. To join/apply for membership in the Green Team, simply check the interest box on Albany’s Volunteer Application. If you would like more information about joining the Green Team contact Nicole Almaguer, (510) 528-5760.
The Watershed Project and the City of Albany are partnering to host the California Coastal Clean up Day, an annual beach and inland waterway cleanup, is the state's largest volunteer event. Clean up Day is a great way for families, students, service groups and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun! Wear old clothes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring your own water bottle and gloves if you have them. Supplies and refreshments provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, contact The Watershed Project at (510) 6653430. RSVP for groups of 10 or more at volunteer@thewatershedproject.org.
Co m p le te Str e e ts Walk Aud its and Char r e t tes Dates TBA (November or December) The City has hired Nelson/Nygaard Consultants to draft a Complete Streets Design concept for Buchannan Street and San Pablo Avenue.
