community-building albany-style

Backyard Chickens When was the last time you borrowed an egg from your neighbor? Do you know your neighbor? Did you know that the City of Albany allows you to keep up to six hens (no roosters) in your backyard?* Keeping a coop in your backyard oVers significant neighborly opportunities. Perhaps you and your neighbors can share a coop (and the eggs the hens produce). Or maybe you provide the coop, and a neighbor provides the range. Either way, six hens produce 28 eggs on average per week, and you form a closer bond with your neighbors. That’s good for community in Albany.

For more information: www.albanyca.org/community www.backyardchickens.com

how might albany create a stronger, safer, more vibrant community where democracy works at a local level?

Getting to know one’s neighbors is a start. When neighbors interact— whether through block parties, home-garden produce sharing, or book club meetings—connections are formed between people and trust is built. Such social capital can lead to a stronger, safer community, a community where its members have a greater sense of belonging. *Required permit can be obtained from the Community Development Department.

Kids’ Carpentry AGES 5–12

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. The kids are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety and craftsmanship. Projects include: super tops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird feeders, trucks, and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year-round with different projects offered each session. Visit the website to view an 8-minute documentary. Ureka! Science Class AGES 8–1 1

Ureka! Science is a unique class that introduces young scientists to key concepts from biology, chemistry, and physics. Each class starts with an entertaining demonstration. The participants are then let loose in the lab, working with nontoxic household items to explore these ideas through engaging experiments, recording what they see in their personal lab notebook. A group discussion at the end of each class allows lab partners to share their observations and foster the connection between ideas and experience. Topics covered include optics, density, and comparison of plant and animal cells under microscopes, pressure/vacuum, microscopic pond life, and much more! The program uses fun and exciting activities to promote scientific literacy, critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving and an exchange of ideas. Activity sheets are provided weekly so that our young scientists can share their experiences at home. A great opportunity for your child to learn directly from instructors that hold Ph Ds in science. $12 material fee paid to the instructor. ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

Play-Well: Bash Em’ Bots

We use LEGO® System and Technic products to teach engineering.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a massive motorized machine? Our Play-Well Engineering instructors guide students in this advanced Play-Well engineering camp, as they re-engineer standard vehicles into mechanized machines that can traverse challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots and take on Play Well Instructors ’ colossal creations.

Take a “crash course” in Demolition Derby, enter the Sumo Wrestling Competition, design a Mighty Metropolis, challenge the Battle Track, build and race a locomotive faster than a speeding Worm Drive. Use LEGO® building components to explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Children will be given instruction, design challenges, and competitions appropriate to their facility with LEGO® Technic and System components. Each session will include directed projects with instruction, performance-oriented projects with guidance, and free-building time to construct that “Really Great Project” with huge quantities of LEGO®. These are fun, challenging, hands-on, and minds-on camps suitable for LEGO® novices to “maniacs.” Returning students will work on new projects. For more information on Play-Well’s Camps, visit www.play-well.org.

Then the machine madness starts. Children will discover how many different machines, simple and complex, we use in our daily lives. Campers will design simple machines using pulleys, wedges, screws and levers and have fun learning how catapults work, then we move on to fun with the Mad Science robots! Each camper will build robots that you can keep, all the while learning the science of robotics. $30 lab fee paid to the instructor includes a take home robot.

Each day campers overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all–their minds. The camp involves a team-based approach to solving problems like, “If you were stranded on a desert island how would you survive?” Save your egg in the egg drop! Campers will build catapults, bottle launchers and even light sabers. Discover and create! $15 material fee paid to instructor.

Kids’ Carpentry Camp

AGES 5–7

AGES 5–12

An animation class designed for little ones. Using action figures and LEGOS® and creating their own cartoons, the kids will learn how to make a character come to life and move. Together they will create and shoot a short film with lots of action and plenty of giggles.

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. They are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety, and craftsmanship. Projects include supertops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird-feeders and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year round with different projects offered each session. Our motto is: “Building confidence and teaching with respect and humor in a safe and happy environment.”

Ansel Adams said, “The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it.” There are many choices a photographer can make that will give images more visual impact, and most of them have nothing to do with gear. In this class, we’ll look closely at elements of composition, including intention, point of view and what to include in the frame. We’ll also take a look at the exposure triangle to understand how shutter speed and aperture affect an image. If you want to make more than snapshots, this class is for you! Reading Novels

Novel for January–March: The Mayor of Casterbridge, by Thomas Hardy, is a fascinating character study. Its opening scene, in which an inebriated man sells his wife at a country fair, is considered one of the greatest opening scenes of a novel. The Penguin Books edition of The Mayor of Casterbridge is preferred but not required, and there’s no need to read the book before the term starts. Novel for April–June: Richard Price is considered by many to be the best writer of dialogue in contemporary American fiction. This skill is brilliantly displayed in Samaritan, which is a detective story, an incisive character study, and an exploration of the tangled roots of generosity. DAY

AGES 50–OLDER

The Granta Book of the American Short Story is a rich collection of short fiction written from the 1940’s through 1990; its editor is Richard Ford. We will read and discuss stories by authors as stylistically different from each other as Wallace Stegner and Lorrie Moore.

Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. We move at snail’s pace over puzzling and intriguing passages, emphasizing language, structure, method and implicit meanings. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say.

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome.
