This basic introduction Lego Robotics Camp uses robot building and computer programming to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts within a team problem/solution recreational setting. Through the use of the LEGO® Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit, NXT-G software and laptop computers, the camp experience is designed to be hands-on and lab research activity based. Although some participants may have had experience with general LEGO® kits, simple robot building and simple programming assume no prior experience. After introductory training, students will be able to program autonomous robot STEM lab tasks and games. Peter Margolis is a California credentialed middle and high school teacher. Academically, he holds three masters degrees in Recreation Administration, MBA and Education. All equipment and supplies are provided for use.

Special Interest

Kids’ Carpentry Ages 5–12

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. The kids are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety and craftsmanship. Projects include: super tops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird feeders, trucks, and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year-round with different projects offered each session. Visit the website to view an 8-minute documentary. Our motto is: “Building confidence and teaching with respect in a safe and happy environment.” DATE

For the reluctant writer to the enthusiastic, this intensive writing program is designed to strengthen students' abilities to express themselves through the written word with special emphasis on skill-building (mechanics, editing, spelling). Small, cooperative, fun classes will focus on various writing strategies from pre-writing and organizing ideas to drafting, revising and publishing a class magazine. The series is cumulative and will build on previous lessons, including those taught in the Creative Writing Summer Lab!

You’ve studied hard for your grades and test scores. Now, how will you stand out from the sea of applicants who share your academic profile? You have to tell your personal story in a creative, compelling style. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn about the principles of excellent storytelling, start potential essays, and encourage each other along the way. Bring a pen and paper to class. Alice Chen (BA Stanford, MSJ Northwestern) is a professional journalist, tutor and former center director of a college counseling firm in Palo Alto. Note: This class is designed for High School Seniors.

An introduction to the Chinese Five Elements as they relate to career, relationships, wealth, fun and rest. This class will help you to analyze life balance, design a holistic plan and learn tools to bring life back into balance. $5 material fee (for books) paid to the instructor.

This course focuses on techniques for learning and retaining new vocabulary, and on improving English grammar, syntax and pronunciation. In the first hour the class reads and discusses fascinating stories. While students analyze the stories in pairs, the instructor, a seasoned ESL professional, listens to each student and pinpoints areas that need improvement. The instructor then provides individuals with exercises to help them correct their most common errors in language. Through lessons from the Princeton Review text Wordsmart (approx. $11), students learn the sophisticated vocabulary they need for standardized tests and to incorporate it in professional and social conversation. During the term, students prepare and deliver oral presentations about their particular interests, utilizing new vocabulary. To see photos of past student presentations, please visit website.

No auditions are necessary, but players should be of an intermediate level or above. New string players are welcome; winds and brass must have the permission of the conductor. Memoir Writing ages 50–older

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. DATE

Come celebrate the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s powerful “The Rite of Spring”. We will explore the reasons why Stravinsky gained early fame with his three ballets–The Firebird, Petrushka and especially The Rite of Spring. He who was declared the greatest, most influential composer of the 20th century continued to compose for another 60 years, but few are familiar with his other works. Through recordings, musical performances, guest speakers and discussions, we will familiarize ourselves with all of his ballets and judge for ourselves whether his works deserve recognition or justifiable dismissal. Email Richard at the Recreation & Community Services Department at raustin-castillo@albanyca.org, or visit the City’s website, www.albanyca.org/volunteer, for more information and an application.

Albany has taken its own course on how to boost the awareness and appreciation of our Urban Forest. First, we are looking to challenge all Albany residents and businesses–plant 1000 trees before the year is out. To help along with this ambitious goal we have organized and planned for several events to get some tree magic going. On September 28th there will be a one day event with tree planting, entertainment, food and drink with the Albany folks (see Albany Green Corridor Tree Planting Event on leftside of this page).

A lbany Gr e e n Co r r i d o r Tr e e P l anti n g Event Saturday, September 28 • 9 am–2 pm Join your neighbors to create Albany’s first Green Corridor by planting trees. Let’s create a thriving tree-filled neighborhood with song birds, higher property values, lower energy costs and a flourishing business district. The event will be held on Saturday, September 28, 9 am–2 pm at the 500 block of Adams Street where Adams dead ends into the California Center for the Blind. Bring work gloves, hat, sunscreen and wear close-toed shoes. No experience is necessary and instruction, demonstration and tools will be provided. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for your very own free street tree and to ask questions to a certified arborist! There will even be a visit by Smokey Bear. Bring your whole family for a tree-mendous morning of fun and community spirit! Cali fo r n ia Coastal Clean u p Day Saturday, September 21 • 9 am–noon The Watershed Project and the City of Albany are partnering to host this annual clean-up event at Albany Beach. This is the state's largest volunteer event and is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them and to have fun! Wear old clothes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring your own water bottle and gloves if you have them. Supplies and refreshments provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, contact The Watershed Project at (510) 665-3430. RSVP for groups of 10 or more at volunteer@thewatershedproject.org. Please consider riding a bike or walking to the event! activity guide Fall 2013

Although this is one day, the challenge to plant 1000 trees is ongoing every day. We can fill every available space for a street tree, add to the trees on the Ohlone Trail, the various medians, and wherever it makes sense to set roots down. The effort also involves watering and caring for the young trees. This is a community based program. We have organizations like Albany Community Foundation, Transition Albany, Solano Stroll, Chamber of Commerce, the various schools, among other groups, so you see the all out community involvement, similar to the all out benefits we receive from trees like clean air and better business areas and storm water retention not to discount the beauty of healthy trees. For more information contact Tony Wolcott, City of Albany's Urban Forester at (510) 559-4275. Ocean Vie w Communit y Organic Garden weekly “O pen Gar d en” Sundays • 11 am–1 pm The Ocean View Community Organic Garden serves Albany citizens who live in apartments or condos with little space to grow food. We strive to foster a spirit of community, with gardeners growing and sharing organic fruit, produce, herbs, and flowers. The garden is located in Ocean View Park at 900 Buchanan Street behind the tennis courts. Join us during our weekly “Open Garden” on Sundays from 11 am–1 pm, whenever the garden gates are open. Far m er ' s M ar ket Wednesdays • 3–7 pm The City works with the Berkeley Ecology Center to host this weekly community market with a focus on local, organic produce and goods. Check out the Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays from 3–7pm on Solano Avenue between San Pablo Avenue and Adams Street. The market will be open until December this year.
