Let’s Pool Our Tools
Has the native flora in your backyard grown waist-high, but you really don’t want to own a weed wacker? Have turkeys permanently defaced your power drill? Are you circular-saw impaired?
For more information: www.albanyca.org/toolpool
The City of Albany Recreation & Community Services Department is starting a tool lending library—Albany Tool Pool—so that we can all share those tools we only need every once in a while. Tool lending libraries work like regular libraries, except you don’t read the tools, you use them instead. Tool lending libraries give the community access to needed tools, without people having to purchase and store such things. Albany Tool Pool will provide low-cost access to tools, foster sustainability, and build community through sharing. All good, right? Donations are now being accepted. Drop off your extra hand tools, gardening tools, working power tools or anything your neighbors might need for do-it-yourself home improvement projects. Donations will be accepted Sundays between 10 am and 1 pm at the Albany Senior Center, 846 Masonic Avenue, beginning April 14. Stay tuned for when Albany Tool Pool opens.

We use martial techniques, meditation and breathing exercises to help develop the power of mind and body. Founded by Master Koichi Tohei, who was responsible for bringing the martial art of Aikido to the world in 1953. Taught and overseen by Maida Sensei, direct student and representative of Tohei Sensei. Maida Sensei holds the rank of 7th Dan Shihan (Master Instructor) and has taught professionally since 1976. This class is suitable for Adults of any level or physical ability, and for children ages 7 and older with some experience in Aikido. Younger children and children new to Aikido are welcome if accompanied onto the mat by a parent or guardian. The first hour of class is recommended for all beginners. Pascale Roger-McKeever is originally from France, grew up in Australia, studied acting in London and moved to New York City for the American dream! In New York, she graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University and pursued an acting and writing career. She so enjoyed expressing herself through poetry that she created a three women performance piece of her poems. Last August Pascale moved to Albany from Halifax, Nova Scotia where she taught drama and poetry performance to adults and children, (K-8th). Pascale’s workshops focuses on fun physical and vocal exercises executed in groups, pairs or alone. No workshop is ever the same; the content is developed according to what happens spontaneously in the group. Pascale is a devoted teacher interested in supporting and nurturing an authentic expression of each participant’s individual qualities while also stretching them beyond what they already know about themselves or others.

Albany Middle School English teacher Abby Skrivan, MA, offers week-long, intensive creative writing workshops for kids. These small classes offer a fun, supportive learning environment for writing, reading and learning from each other. The participants will have the opportunity to form an intimate, student-directed writing community as they develop and deepen their mastery of the writing process. Students will take part in a wide range of writing exercises, including cooperative games, observational writing, poetry, story writing and peer-editing. This unforgettable week will culminate in the writing and production of a bound “literary journal” of their favorite work. Note: Students who attended in the summer of 2012 are encouraged to attend! Second and thirdyear students will deepen the progress made and take their writing to a new level! Attending multiple sessions is also encouraged. Each week will focus on different skills and writing strategies.
How exciting would it be to design and build a skyscraper of your very own? This class introduces students to explore architectural concepts through visuals, sketching and model building with materials such as wood, cardboard, clay and toothpicks. In this camp series we will explore structural basics such as columns, pyramids, bridges and skyscrapers. Maria Denney is a licensed architect in the State of California and a member of the American Institute of Architects. Her passion is introducing architecture concepts to children and relating them to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). $30 material fee paid to the instructor.

Maria Denney is a licensed architect in the State of California and a member of the American Institute of Architects. She has more than 12 years of experience in design and construction of public buildings including schools and libraries in the Bay Area. Maria is teaching Architecture with Kids this session. Each class begins with visuals of the class topic which the students sketch. The visuals begin with concepts which are familiar to students such as the tree being nature's first column. The discussion is continued by exploring architecture from around the world and how it has developed from ancient history to modern times. Next is a hands-on building they create themselves to take home. Maria enjoys encouraging each child to try something new. Many children do not know what architecture is when they come to class, and are engaged in the hands-on projects. Architecture is a wonderful handson way to engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Classical Guitar Technique
A g e s 1 3 – A d u lt
A d u lt
Recorder music from VERY beginning! Learn the basics of music making through learning to play the recorder. Students will learn basic fingering, blowing and music reading. Student will study either soprano or alto recorder, learning fingerings for an octave and a half, hand position, blowing, breathing and tonguing; basic music reading skills. Beginner bass recorder may join class, but must play alto recorder already.
The band has been playing and performing in and around Albany for more than 15 years under the umbrella of the former Albany Adult School, and now becomes part of the City of Albany’s Recreation and Community Services Activities program. We play classic to modern instrumental and vocal jazz, swing, latin and other genres arranged for traditional 18-20 piece jazz big band, ordinarily saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, piano, bass and percussion. Our band offers an opportunity to learn, play, and perform tightly arranged jazz, and to explore the vibrant experience of soloing and singing with a big band. Playing and singing level is intermediate and above; experience with jazz and swing idiom is recommended. Participation in the band requires a commitment to attend regular rehearsals, and to participate in occasional public performances. Due to limited space, enrollment is by permission of instructor only. For information about how to join or other questions about enrollment, contact instructor. Performances may be scheduled outside regular rehearsal dates and times. $20 material fee paid to instructor.

Beginning Chinese A d u lt
A d u lt
This course focuses on techniques for learning and retaining new vocabulary, and on improving English grammar, syntax and pronunciation. In the first hour the class reads and discusses fascinating stories. While students analyze the stories in pairs, the instructor, a seasoned ESL professional, listens to each student and pinpoints areas that need improvement. The instructor then provides individuals with exercises to help them correct their most common errors in language. Through lessons from the Princeton Review text Wordsmart (approx. $11), students learn the sophisticated vocabulary they need for standardized tests and to incorporate it in professional and social conversation. During the term, students prepare and deliver oral presentations about their particular interests, utilizing new vocabulary. Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. DAY

Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. We move at snail’s pace over puzzling and intriguing passages, emphasizing language, structure, method and implicit meanings. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say.

Bill's new CD, “In Good Company,” was one of the most critically acclaimed acoustic CDs of 2012, and the band's monthly Kensington Circus Pub performances are legendary, attracting fans from all over the Bay Area. www. billevansbanjo.com.
Berlin Style Ping Pong Friday, April 26 • 6:45–8:30 pm • Free Berlin Style Ping Pong is a great way to meet people and be social. A group of people surround a table, whoever is in the server spot serves the first ball to the person directly across from them, and then moves out of the way, to the right. The person to the server’s left takes their place and the rest of the circle moves counterclockwise. If someone messes up they are out. When there are two players left, they play until someone scores three points and wins. Bring paddles. 38
Often found hip-deep in Madagascar mud, Dr. Brian Fisher is a modern-day explorer who has devoted his life to the study and conservation of ants and biodiversity around the world. His research sends him through the last remote rainforests and deserts of Madagascar and Africa in search of ants. Although his subjects may be small in stature, they make a huge impact on their ecosystems. And what they lack in size, they more than make up for in numbers. By documenting the species diversity and distribution of this “invisible majority,” Dr. Fisher has appeared in a number of BBC, Discover Channel, and National Geographic films and has been profiled in Newsweek and Discover magazine. Dr. Fisher is currently Associate Curator of Entomology at the California Academy of Sciences and adjunct professor of biology at both the University of California at Berkeley and San Francisco State University.
