LEGO® Robotics Camp

Ages 5–10

Ages 8–13

Explore different forms of art making using clay, drawing, painting, and textile sculpture. We start with wet clay, which we sculpt, paint with glazes, and melt glass into unique art works to take home at the end of camp. While the clay dries, we'll make 'sock creatures' from our wild imaginations! Join the fun with our local Albany artist Paquerette! $10 material fee paid to instructor.

This basic introduction LEGO® Robotics Camp uses robot building and computer programming to teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts within a team problem/solution recreational setting. Through the use of the LEGO® Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit, NXT-G software, and laptop computers, the camp experience is designed to be hands-on and lab research activity based. All equipment and supplies are provided for use. Although some participants may have had experience with general LEGO® kits, simple robot building and simple programming assume no prior experience. After introductory training, students will be able to program autonomous robot STEM lab tasks (challenges) and games. Peter Margolis is a California credentialed middle and high school teacher. Academically, he holds three masters degrees in Recreation Administration, MBA, and Education. Currently, he is on the advisory board for the Richmond High School Engineering Academy.

Albany Police Activities League (APAL) The Albany Police Activities League (APAL) offers alternatives to crime and delinquency by engaging youth in wholesome and character building activities while establishing positive relationships between the police and youth. During the fall there will be separate wrestling programs for both elementary and middle school boys and girls. Participants in both wrestling programs are paired with other wrestlers of similar weight and age and learn basic wrestling skills. Every practice is supervised by coaches with wrestling experience and is lots of fun. The sport of wresting includes tumbling and stretching and improves coordination and agility. Socialization and team building skills also increase as wrestlers work together becoming one team. No previous experience is necessary to participate. For more information about the Albany Police Activities League, please see our web site, www. albanypal.net or contact us at apal@albanypal. net. You may also contact APAL through the Albany Police Department, 525-7300. Please also like the Albany Police Activities League on Facebook. Police & Youth Working Together for a Safer Community

Hanabi’s Beginning Judo Ages 6–12

Our active beginning judo class will have students rolling and wrestling as they develop discipline, coordination and confidence. We begin by learning how to fall safely and move on to grappling techniques, before learning simple throws. Japanese games, songs and language are an important part of our cultural education. Discipline and respect are emphasized along with (not in spite of) the fun. Judo, both a Martial Art and an International Sport, teaches controlling your opponent through throws and pins—there is no hitting or kicking. It is very safe and yet very effective. Hanabi Judo has been a part of the Albany community, developing national champions and confident children of character, since 1965. Note: Participants will be required to become members of USA Judo, which offers insurance and the privilege to take part in other Judo events. Annual membership fee is $35. ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

What goals would transform the quality of your life? It could be something big like changing careers, or something important like finding more balance in your life, or feeding your soul by doing something creative. It could be something that seems mundane, yet still important like cleaning out your closets or finishing that half-started knitting project. Do you find yourself thinking about it, getting distracted by the never-ending demands on your time, and putting it off? Six months later, do you find yourself in the same place? Achieving your goals requires that you take the Next Step that gets you one step closer to your goal. Once completed, you take another Next Step, then another. The cumulative effect of taking Next Steps is reaching your goal! Become inspired, get unstuck, generate energy and momentum, discover how setbacks help you move forward, and use the support of the group to reach your goal. Learn how to make any change with Next Steps and transform your life. In addition to the 5 class meetings, an optional one-onone coaching session with the instructor is offered to class participants. This class is an opportunity to try creative movement, rhythm practice and responding to music in your personal style. Join Impromptu No Tutu, the resident ensemble of the Albany Senior Center, for these lively and mindful movement sessions open to all; no dance experience needed. We warm up with easy elements of the Brain Dance* and T’ai Chi, and then move to diverse genres of music, voice or silence. Chairs and other props are used as inspirations for rhythm and expanding our range of motion, balance and expression. Inspired by the inclusive Orff Schulwerk music approach, this class is a safe place for play, exploration and interaction, and promotes both physical and mental agility. One Friday a month during the school year children from the Albany Preschool next door join us for half an hour. This class also occasionally tours to other senior centers to demonstrate healthy aging through movement. Call the Center before dropping in so you know where to find us. Memoir Writing

The Lives of Women

ages 50–older

Ages 50–older

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed.

The short essays in Maya Angelou’s Letter to My Daughter are candid and stimulating. The book’s title is not to be read literally; we’ll discuss this bold gesture.

Duarte’s Poinsettia Nursery & McHenry Mansion

Dickens Holiday Craft Fair & Luther Burbank Home and Gardens Tour

Holiday Lights

Ages 50–older

Ages 50–older

Are you getting ready for the holidays? Step one: Decorate your house with Poinsettias. At our first stop, we’ll visit Duarte Poinsettias, where the Poinsettias are “greenhouse fresh”. Duarte Poinsettias are grown on site, in the nursery’s state-of-the-art new modern greenhouses. Duarte Nursery grows over 60,000 Poinsettias, with over 30 varieties and colors. All sales are by cash only. Step Two: Get decoration ideas at the McHenry Mansion that will be decorated for the holidays. Our second stop is at the McHenry Mansion, Modesto's Treasure . It is the city's only original Victorian home and one of the few remaining reminders of the town's rich heritage. We’ll have time to stop by McHenry Museum as well. Oh right, in between we will stop at a local eating spot for a “Dutch treat” lunch. Trip includes transportation and admissions to Duarte and McHenry.

The Travel Troupe travels near and far to find the best destinations, events, and fairs. This time we’re heading north to Santa Rosa and the Dickens Holiday Craft Fair and Luther Burbank Home and Gardens Tour. Celebrate the season and find gifts for all of your loved ones with a festive shopping experience featuring over 70 local artists. Shop for quality, hand-crafted holiday décor, home goods, jewelry, bath and body products, edibles and more all sold by the artists! After the fair we’ll continue the season’s celebrations by visiting the historic Home and Gardens of Luther Burbank. Experience a charming reminder of bygone days when we tour the home decked out in Victorian holiday finery inside and out. You won’t want to miss this combined holiday treat! Trip includes transportation and admissions; lunch is on your own.

It looks like we’ve started another annual holiday tradition! We’ll rejoin Marilyn Straka from “On the Level Tours” for this Holiday Lights spectacular. See downtown San Francisco and all that glitters at the holiday season! This fun-filled tour provides insights into SF history as well as current city trivia. See the inside of six uniquely decorated and festive hotels as well as several office buildings. At Union Square, visit the St. Francis hotel followed by free time for shopping and exploring. As the lights come on, we’ll leave for dinner at Fuzio’s at Embarcadero 1. A walk along the lighted Embarcadero Center and fairyland at the Hyatt Regency complete our day in the City. Trip inludes transportation, professional tour guide and 3-couse dinner.

The natural and cultural history of this northern Napa Valley town adds another dimension to the wine country experience. Much of the region’s history is still alive in Calistoga, from authentic Victorian architecture to the city’s famous mineral hot springs. L e a h Vi r s i k R e m n a n ts o f Pa r i s October 3–December 29 • Opening Reception: October 5, 4–6 pm Albany Community Center Foyer I aim to elevate everyday material, to reinvent the lives of inanimate objects that have outlasted their initial use. Collecting paper along my travels is a favorite pastime of mine. Paris was no different. French ruled paper, stamps and vintage thread from Les Puces de Saint-Ouen Market spoke to me of pure potentiality and made their way effortlessly into my suitcase. Now out of context, these remnants, highlighted in individual chine-collé monotypes, evoke vivid personal memories of an epic trip as well as my summer before graduate school. We’ve been building community and to encouraging creative expression and conversation since 2011. Four years of innovative films and community engagement (free popcorn!) has set a level of quality we are proud of. We are especially proud of our expanding year-round program of special film presentations and workshops for all ages. Be part of this much-lauded national festival and cozy community event: Submit a Film: All ages, all genres. There is a category for your short (or really short) film. We take filmmakers seriously: Every submission is reviewed by at least two members of our selection team and finalists are sent to our judges. Are you from Albany and inspired by our town? Our special “My Own Private Albany” category needs you! Volunteer: It takes an urban village like Albany to put on a film festival. We need you. You will never work harder or have more fun than you will as a member of our crew. Be a Financial- or In-Kind Partner: We draw our audience from all over the Bay Area. The San Francisco Chronicle has featured us in its weekend events, and the East Bay Express has repeatedly included us in its list of “5 Best Things to Do This Weekend”. As part of every sponsor package your logo will be featured on all of our marketing materials and social media. Watch films! Come and enjoy the wide variety of films for all ages, the friendly ambience, and the free popcorn. ACF receives monetary donations on behalf of Albany FilmFest. Donations to the ACF are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

You can make it! And we want to see it! KALB and the Community Media Access Community Need Your Voice and Vision Community media gives you a voice in your community, a chance to share your personal vision. KALB and the Community Media Access Committee (CMAC) support community access television as a way for Albany citizens to share in the political and social life of their community and as a vehicle for self-expression and communication. Our mission is to provide a public forum for expression reflecting the diverse backgrounds, views, and interests of Albany citizens. KALB is Albany’s very own TV station, presenting a wide variety of public programming: local sports, music, health services, films, seasonal parades, talk shows, weird movies, poetry, public meetings, and Albany events. In conjunction with CMAC, KALB also presents community workshops, classes, author and artist talks, and the annual Albany FilmFest (albanyfilmfest.org) every March. Check our website (kalb33.org) for upcoming events. The City of Albany cablecasts KALB 24/7 on Comcast Ch. 33 (in Albany) and AT&T U-Verse ch. 99. No TV? Watch public meetings, videos, and other local shows in HD at Youtube.com/AlbanyKALB or streaming live at albanyca.org/KALB and kalb33.org. Be part of our KALB family. Make a show, film an event, or volunteer for our TV crew. Show us how Albany looks from your point of view. It can be as easy as making a cell phone video. If you don't know how but want to learn, our Make-aMovie workshops can teach you the basics. You could even enter your film in the Albany FilmFest! If you would like to learn how you can air a show on on our media outlets, volunteer for our crew, or just learn more about KALB and Albany media, please email KALB Manager Jeremy Allen at jeallen@albanyca.org or call 510-559-4272.

Shop local for all of your Dinner with Albany items! Solano Avenue is a local treasure with the charm of a small town and an unmatched array of restaurants and retail establishments – including professional and personal services. Where else can you find a larger collection of independently-owned “mom and pop” enterprises? Where else can you find such a dynamic range of services and get so many things done in one area? Where else can you find a more culturally rich group of businesses with owners from all over the map? Nowhere… It’s on Solano. Before you rush-off to the mall this holiday season, think of Solano first. We may not have the glitz of your local shopping center, but we have the lasting spirit of “small business” and that counts for double. Thank you for your continuing support of Solano Avenue!

Bike Bike Racks in Albany A few years ago, Albany Strollers & Rollers realized that a major reason people didn’t ride their bicycles was because they didn’t have a safe place to park in Albany. So AS&R found the “Bike Bike Racks”. They are attractive, functional, and enhance the streetscape. AS&R has since worked with local businesses to match funds, and with the City for rack installation. By the end of this summer there will be a total of 25 Bike Bike racks around town! Albany Strollers & Rollers is a volunteer organization founded in 2004 to make cycling, walking and other active transportation (wheelchair, skates, scooters, etc.) in Albany easier and safer.

For Albany Local Week: Check-in on Facebook during Albany Local Week (September 20–26) at as many of the local business that have sponsored a Bike Bike Rack and receive 100 points for each on your ALW Scorecard!

Ne w B ig B elly Trash /Co m post / Recycle Cans in Par ks The City is purchasing new BigBelly trash cans for Ocean View and Terrace Parks. There are currently thirteen similar cans along Solano and two in Memorial Park. City staff hopes these new cans will cut down on litter and pests in the parks while providing expanded recycling opportunities. The cans will each have 3 streams: trash, recycling, and organics. This will be the first opportunity for Albany park users to compost picnic items, including food, paper plates and pizza boxes. If the cans are a success, the City will consider purchasing these three-stream waste systems for other parks as well. Ocean Vie w Communit y Organic Gar d en weekly “O pen Gar d en” Sundays • 11 am–1 pm The Ocean View Community Organic Garden serves Albany citizens who live in apartments or condos with little space to grow food. We strive to foster a spirit of community, with gardeners growing and sharing organic fruit, produce, herbs, and flowers. The garden is located in Ocean View Park at 900 Buchanan Street behind the tennis courts. Join us during our weekly “Open Garden” on Sundays from 11 am–1 pm, whenever the garden gates are open. Pharmaceutical Collectio n B in Albany Senior Center Residents can now safely dispose of unwanted medications for free by bringing them to the Albany Senior Center. The medication disposal bin is located in the lobby and is accessible during their regular business hours. Disposing of your unwanted medicines at this site is free. The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) collects pollution prevention fees from wastewater customers to help fund this program.

The Friends of Albany Parks program encourages community members to get involved with the care, maintenance and beautification of their favorite neighborhood park. Park Gala events provide social gatherings geared toward developing ideas for park improvement and getting residents involved with park maintenance. They help foster a better sense of community and build social capital as neighbors meet and work together. The Galas also provide an opportunity to volunteer for specific park maintenance tasks. park

Friends of Albany Parks members will meet for a Clean-Up Day after the Gala. Each member who attends the Clean-Up Day will receive an official Friends of Albany Parks T-shirt. Additional events will be announced in the Winter/Spring 2015 Activity Guide. For more information contact Liam Kelly at lkelly@albanyca.org or visit www.albanyca.org/volunteer.
