Getting to know Hugh Want to get to know your neighbors a bit better? Why not organize a neighborhood event or activity? Hosting a block party is a sure-fire way to get people together and build community on your block. Block oV the street,* have a potluck and enjoy Albany’s weather while you finally meet the family across the street. Looking for a diVerent way to build community on your block? Albany folks have hosted New Years walks to Albany Hill, signed up for the Recreation Department’s Block Movie Night program, hosted luminary-making parties during the holidays, and hosted a street dance party.

how might albany create a stronger, safer, more vibrant community where democracy works at a local level?
Getting to know one’s neighbors is a start. When neighbors interact— whether through block parties, home-garden produce sharing, or book club meetings—connections are formed between people and trust is built. Such social capital can lead to a stronger, safer community, a community where its members have a greater sense of belonging. *Get permit from Recreation & Community Services Dept., Albany Community Center.

Make-It Ages 6–10
Hey, let’s make things! What kind of things? Let's make our own board game, a pop-up book, some hand puppets, and a diorama. We don’t have to use only one kind of material, you can use lots of different materials. Why are we making things? To help tell stories, four stories of four heroes: Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa (first session); Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Jones (second session). In Make-It, we begin with a story about one of our heroes and then, we make a craft, construction, art or science project that comes out of the story. There are new projects each session and more challenging projects for older students. $12 material fee paid to the instructor. ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

Henri Ducharme is intensely creative. He worked as a carpenter for several years, designing and building soundproof rooms for musicians. He recently drew plans and renovated his Victorian home, and researched and designed its landscaping. Over the years he’s designed everything from a wooden contraption to help beginning music theory students, an algorithm to speed up computer calculations with large matrixes, and many jigs for unusual construction techniques. But his greatest passion is teaching. Henri has taught children for fifteen years. He manages a team of middle school students in an annual engineering competition, he has created a Build the World class combining handwork and creation stories, an Architecture for Kindergarteners class, and several other innovative building classes.

Architectural Design Ages 10–14
This class is a child-sized version of a standard “Introduction to Design” class that you find in college Architecture and Design schools. We learn to visualize in three dimensions using drawing materials and cameras. We play around with many different ways of joining materials-rivets, stitching and weaving, hardware fasteners, glues, press-fit, etc. We solve simple design problems. In teams, students then work on more elaborate projects, such as designing a board game or a model of an architectural space. We learn the language of critique and the art of helping each other do the best work we can do. $12 material fee payable to the instructor. ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. The kids are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety and craftsmanship. Projects include: super tops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird feeders, trucks, and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year-round with different projects offered each session. Visit the website to view an 8-minute documentary. Our motto is: “Building confidence and teaching with respect in a safe and happy environment.” ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

Albany String Academy Looking for something challenging, fun, creative and beautiful for kids to do next summer? Want your child to acquire a skill that improves analytical, critical thinking, fine motor, organizational and artistic abilities, something they can take with them and make friends for life along the way? Then come on board with the Albany String Academy. Founded by professional violinist, string teacher and director Dennie Mehocich, classes at the Academy are for those who want to get the best start in string playing through a classroom ensemble format, learning from an experienced string professional, building a solid foundation in the fundamentals of good string playing. Classes meet daily, M–F for four weeks, ending with a public performance. Ms. Mehocich is a 30+ year Marin Symphony violinist and veteran of the Best of Broadway series in San Francisco, including the five-year run of The Phantom of the Opera. She maintains private teaching studios in both San Rafael and the Albany area. She is owner and manager of the Marin String Quartet & Ensembles, a musical entertainment business. Students must provide their own or rental instrument. You must speak with the instructor before you procure an instrument for your string-playing child. There will be a meeting on the first day of camp for parents and children.

Albany Chamber Orchestra A d u lt
The Albany Chamber Orchestra is a 35-piece orchestra composed of string, wind, brass and percussion instruments. It was formerly known as the Albany Community Orchestra, the Albany Adult School Orchestra and most recently the Albany Chamber Strings. The orchestra was organized by Ernest Douglas in 1975 as a class in the Albany Adult School. In the past 38 years, it has given hundreds of amateur adult musicians the opportunity to study and perform over 300 selections from the orchestral repertoire. No auditions are necessary, but players should be of an intermediate level or above. New string players are welcome; winds and brass must have the permission of the conductor. The Orchestra presents three free public concerts each year and an occasional Young People’s Concert. Participants are expected to participate in a concert on Sundays, March 30 and June 8. Albany Big Band Jazz Ensemble The Albany Jazz Band has been playing big band music for more than 15 years. It is part of the City of Albany’s Recreation and Community Services Activities program. The band plays classic to modern instrumental and vocal jazz, swing, latin and other genres arranged for traditional 18-20 piece jazz big band, ordinarily saxophones, trumpets, trombones, guitar, piano, bass and percussion. Our band offers an opportunity to learn, play, and perform tightly arranged jazz, and to explore the vibrant experience of soloing and singing with a big band. Playing and singing level is intermediate and above; experience with jazz and swing idiom is recommended. Participation in the band requires a commitment to attend regular rehearsals, and to participate in occasional public performances. Due to limited space, enrollment is by permission of instructor only. For information about how to join or other questions about enrollment, contact instructor. Performances may be scheduled outside regular rehearsal dates and times. $20 material fee paid to instructor. DATE

Bulgari has become synonymous with innovation and luxury in jewelry design. This exhibition focuses on the decades of the 1950s through the 1980s; in the period after World War II Bulgari began to create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th-century Roman school of goldsmiths. By the 1970’s, Bulgari’s bold and innovative style had gained success with celebrities and the jet set. The exhibition includes several striking pieces from the Elizabeth Taylor collection. The venue is Davies Symphony Hall and our seating is the best in the house…orchestra, main level! We’ll start off with a champagne kickoff reception at the Senior Center. Trip is all inclusive: Transportation, champagne reception, tickets.

Memoir Writing a g e s 5 0 – ol d e r
Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. ALBANY MEETS RESIDENT

The Magic of Mindfulness (Drop-in) A g e s 5 0 – ol d e r
Mindfulness is paying attention to what is happening right now. This simple kind of attention nurtures a greater awareness, clarity, and peacefulness, as well as helps uncover our innate loving kindness, compassion and wisdom. We will learn many different types of mindfulness/meditation techniques and practices. We will draw from some of the great spiritual traditions but also from poetry, Chi Gung, The Alexander Technique, the stories of great teachers and the stories of our lives. Beginning and advanced meditators are welcome. This is a drop in class or you can register for the entire session. Mitch Durell has 43 years of mediation practice and 25 years teaching in Senior Centers, health clubs, San Quentin, and retreats and workshops in Europe. Contact instructor for more information. DATE

2014 Albany Civics Academy Get a behind-the-scenes look at city government! Thursday Evenings, 6:45–9 pm April 17–May 29, 2014 (7 sessions) Albany City Hall 1000 San Pablo Avenue, Albany The final session will be a graduation ceremony at the City of Albany council meeting held on Monday, June 2, 2014. City government touches so many facets of our everyday lives—from the streets we drive on to the parks we play in. We know that City Council meets twice a month, and that in an emergency help is only minutes away. But exactly how does your city operate? And how can residents contribute more to its success? The Albany Civics Academy will provide an interesting perspective into the workings of the city and engage participants in a hands-on overview of city government. Over the course of the program, participants will learn about how decisions are made, where funds are allocated and gain an enhanced understanding of the organizational structure and operations of the various city departments that impact the quality of life in Albany. The City of Albany believes that when residents are better informed about how their city operates, how decisions are made and how funds are allocated they will make better decisions about the future of their city. Therefore
City of Albany
the objectives of the Albany Civics Academy are: 1. To involve and engage residents in learning about and understanding the operation of city government, and to improve communication between the city and those who live and work here. 2. To provide insight into how decisions are made, how city funds are allocated, and how city departments operate. 3. To empower and encourage a larger number of residents to become more civically engaged in the future decisions effecting Albany’s quality of life. Who can apply? Residents who are interested in applying for the Albany Civics Academy need to complete the online application by April 10, 2014. The fee for the program is $10. Priority will be given to Albany residents 17 years or older. Albany business owners will be accepted, space permitting. The ACA will be limited to 22 participants.

Tat i a n a Sa lvato r P o stc a r d s f r o m B ra z i l January 2–April 1, 2014 Opening Reception Sunday, January 5, 4–6 pm Albany Community Center Foyer This show captures glimpses of my memories of growing up in Brazil. The people. The colors. The spirit. Brazilian culture is at once crazy and wonderful, frenetic and contemplative, and as diverse as the country is big. When Brazilians send postcards to one another, they'll often end them with a single word: Saudades (pronounced "sowDAHJ-es"). It translates loosely as "I miss you," but it refers to a longing for someone or someplace where you feel sad because you miss it, but feel happy to love someone or someplace that much to feel this way. These "postcards" from my Brazil are my way of saying "saudades" to my homeland while bringing these impressions to life. Detail, Postcards from Brazil, 2011 acrylic and mixed media, 36 × 54"

The photos in this show depict, among other places, a desert in eastern Oregon, an island off the coast of Maine, and a garden in Berkeley. They were taken over a 20-year time span, mostly with special panorama cameras that utilize a moving lens to sweep across the scene. Spertus, has long been enamored with the “wide open spaces” of the Western landscape. While searching for ways to convey the vastness and grandeur of the mountains and deserts that he was exploring he came upon these pan cameras and it was love at first sight. Spertus subsequently discovered that they also “see” small intimate spaces in fresh and interesting ways. Artists interested in being considered for a show can visit www.albanyca.org/arts for more information.

Albany has taken its own course on how to boost the awareness and appreciation of our Urban Forest. The challenge is to fill every available space with a street tree, add to the trees on the Ohlone Trail, the various medians, and wherever it makes sense to set roots down. The effort also involves watering and caring for the young trees. This is a community based program. We have organizations like Albany Community Foundation, Transition Albany, Solano Stroll, Chamber of Commerce, the various schools, among other groups, so you see the all out community involvement, similar to the all out benefits we receive from trees like clean air and better business areas and storm water retention not to discount the beauty of healthy trees.
