how might albany create a stronger, safer, more vibrant community where democracy works at a local level?

Getting to know one’s neighbors is a start. When neighbors interact— whether through block parties, home-garden produce sharing, or book club meetings—connections are formed between people and trust is built. Such social capital can lead to a stronger, safer community, a community where its members have a greater sense of belonging.

Albany Police Activities League (APAL) APAL offers alternatives to crime and delinquency by engaging youth in wholesome and character building activities such as Crocodile wrestling (1st – 5th grades), Girls Rock! (middle school) and the Albany Police Youth Academy (high school), while establishing positive relationships between the police and youth. This summer APAL and Albany YMCA present Girls Rock! Camp for girls entering grades 6th–8th. This camp is designed specifically for middle school girls to foster self-esteem, help maintain connections with other girls and women in the community, counter trends toward self-doubt and allow for genuine self-expression through verbal sharing and creative activity. Be sure to check out the annual APAL Bicycle Rodeo on May 19 at Cornell School. The purpose of this fun event is to encourage riders to always wear a helmet, to give young cyclists basic skills for on-road riding and to teach them the rules of the road to help keep them safe. For more APAL information visit www. albanypal. net or contact Peggy McQuaid, APAL Program Coordinator, at apal@albanypal.net or call (510) 526-7855. Ureka! Science Camp Ages 8–1 1

Ureka! Science is back again this summer with exciting new topics! We are a unique camp that introduces young scientists to key concepts from biology, chemistry and physics. Each class starts with an entertaining demonstration. Participants are then let loose in the lab, working with nontoxic household items to explore these ideas through engaging experiments, recording what they see in their personal lab notebook. A group discussion at the end of each class allows lab partners to share their observations and foster the connection between ideas and experience. Topics covered include optics, sound, surface tension, capillary action, density, chromatography, microscopic pond life, study of cells and much more! The program uses exciting activities to teach concepts which are then applied to projects. We promote scientific literacy, critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving and an exchange of ideas. Activity sheets are provided daily so that our young scientists can share their experiences at home. A great opportunity for your child to learn directly from instructors that hold Ph.D.s in science. $15 material fee paid to instructor. You can for instance, cut off pieces of your sculpture you don’t like, add something else and let your imagination soar. At the first class bring newspaper, scissors, a roll of one-inch masking tape (not glue) and pen/ pencil. The Wife of Martin Guerre, by Janet Lewis (Swallow Paperback, 1941) has been called one of the most beautiful short novels ever written. Based on an unusual historical incident, this novel is lyrical in its evocation of experiences and sophisticated in its expression of ideas. DATE

Class reads great, enduring literature from around the world, especially the classics from America, England and Europe. Such fiction, long and short, all delve into universal human concerns such as love, religion and death, and confront persistent, unanswerable questions. We move at snail’s pace over puzzling and intriguing passages, emphasizing language, structure, method and implicit meanings. Issue of genre, technique, symbolism, and historic background are also considered. Students discuss, challenge, dispute, re-interpret and misquote what the old teacher is trying to say.

Memoir Writing a g e s 5 0 – ol d e r

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a low-pressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed. DATE

Arts Committee

Toby Bielawski was appointed the City of Albany’s second Poet Laureate in October 2011. An Albany resident, Toby has been teaching writing at Las Positas College in Livermore since 1999. In her application to the Arts Committee, Toby said, “My love of poetry has always been filtered through the lens of community: as a poet, poetry teacher, journal advisor, slam facilitator, workshop leader and participant, and open mike host, I thrive on watching poetry inspire others. The Albany Poet Laureate position offers an opportunity to focus my dedication to the community I call home.” To learn more about Toby and read recent poems, visit www.albanyca.org/arts.

Poet Laureate Launches Poetry Map Toby Bielawski has launched the “Albany Poetry Map.” The idea is to help document all the places where poetry is being written within the city. If you are struck by the muse during your day, write a poem and send it to Toby at albanypoetry@gmail.com. Be sure to include your name, and the “location of inspiration” (address, block, or GPS coordinates). You can view the Poetry Map at http://albanypoetry.tumblr.com/poetrymap. Be sure to add your contribution and become part of the poetry found in Albany!

ca ll fo r e ntr i es The Albany Arts Committee is sponsoring a program for the artistic decoration of a selected number of existing fire hydrants in the City. The Committee is seeking creative designs for painting on existing fire hydrants in a way that adds interest, but does not compromise functionality. Potential design themes could include: ■ Designs inspired by the work of famous artists ■ Designs with a whimsical, humorous or ironic twist that will make viewers smile ■ Context-sensitive designs that would uniquely connect a particular fire hydrant with its immediate surroundings ■ Colorful, abstract designs Selected artist will be expected to execute the work during the months of July and August 2012. B e tsy K e n da ll Lo c a l L a n d s c a p e April 7–July 2 Opening Reception: April 15, 4–6 pm Albany Community Center Foyer In my landscape paintings I aim to create physical memory of California landscapes. The gesture of the brush and feel of paint recreate the feeling of being in that place, on that day. The paintings shift between abstract and representational as a way of engaging one’s intuition in putting the picture together. Ideally, in the context of our indoor electronic lives, they serve to refresh and put ones psychic feet in the larger, natural world around us. L a r ry Va n D e u s e n Th e Pa i n t i n g i s t h e Sto ry July 7–October 1 Opening Reception: July 8, 4–6 pm Albany Community Center Foyer I use the collage method for the compositions of my paintings. I look to many sources, new and old, to create a contemporary blend of images. I think of these layered paintings as a metaphor for the modern world, where at some level everything is connected to everything else. I have a degree in Sculpture from the State University of California, I have shown extensively in Art galleries in America, Europe and Japan, and my work can be found in many private and public collections. Annual Coastal Clean UP

The Volunteer Corps Green Team's mission is to assist City staff and other organizations in increasing wildlife habitat and Albany residents’ opportunities to find nature within city limits. Additional outcomes of its work are strengthened community relationships, fun activities for its members and a more beautiful city! The Green Team is self-led, meaning that its members themselves decide on activities for the group, thus allowing for different levels of leadership and participation. The City of Albany’s Environmental Resources Division and Recreation and Community Service Department support the Green Team with guidance, contacts, and tools and materials for certain projects. To join/apply for membership in the Green Team, simply check the interest box on Albany’s Volunteer Application. If you would like more information about joining the Green Team contact Nicole Almaguer, (510) 528-5760.
