Let’s Pool Our Tools

Has the native flora in your backyard grown waist-high, but you really don’t want to own a weed wacker? Have turkeys permanently defaced your power drill? Are you circular-saw impaired?

For more information: www.albanyca.org/toolpool

The City of Albany Recreation & Community Services Department is starting a tool lending library—Albany Tool Pool—so that we can all share those tools we only need every once in a while. Tool lending libraries work like regular libraries, except you don’t read the tools, you use them instead. Tool lending libraries give the community access to needed tools, without people having to purchase and store such things. Albany Tool Pool will provide low-cost access to tools, foster sustainability, and build community through sharing. All good, right? Donations are now being accepted. Drop off your extra hand tools, gardening tools, working power tools or anything your neighbors might need for do-it-yourself home improvement projects. Donations are accepted at the Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Avenue, Albany. The Albany Tool Pool opens in August.

Founded by professional violinist, string teacher and director Dennie Mehocich, classes at the Academy are for those who want to get the best start in string playing through a classroom ensemble format, learning from an experienced string professional, building a solid foundation in the fundamentals of good string playing. Classes meet daily, M–F for four weeks, ending with a public performance. Ms. Mehocich is a 30+ year Marin Symphony violinist and veteran of the Best of Broadway series in San Francisco, including the five-year run of The Phantom of the Opera. She maintains private teaching studios in both San Rafael and the Albany area. She is owner and manager of the Marin String Quartet & Ensembles, a musical entertainment business. Students must provide their own or rental instrument. You must speak with the instructor before you procure an instrument for your string-playing child. There will be a meeting on the first day of camp for parents and children.

A repertoire class for the advanced string player looking for a fun and challenging ensemble experience, learning the finer points of string and ensemble technique. DATE

We introduce an effective and result-oriented program that play-base, project-based and story-based learning approaches are purposely implemented into a Mandarin curriculum which language skills and fluency is focused. This camp enables students to create a mini project, e.g., Pop-up Card, Origami, Paper Cutting or Crafting, and invites young learners to accomplish a number of game-tasks to complete a story sequence. Each task aims at enhancing the learner’s Mandarin functional skills, e.g., listening, recognition and speaking (basic skills), or inquiry, confirmation, and making deals (advanced skills). Topics of shopping, dining, and greeting spread throughout the course. Each cycle is driven forward by a mix of Scavenger and Treasure Hunt. Tasks of varying requirements are in sync with the story to maximize the overall learning result-all instructed and finalized in Mandarin. Each child will also learn to present their projects to peers and parents, using vocabularies to express color, shapes, how-to, personal preferences and cause-effects.

Engineering FUNdamentals Camps with Play-Well TEKnologies

LEGO® Robotics Camp

We use LEGO® System and Technic products to teach engineering.

This basic introduction LEGO® Robotics Camp uses robot building and computer programming to teach science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts within a team problem/solution recreational setting. Through the use of the LEGO® Mindstorms NXT 2.0 kit, NXT-G software, and laptop computers, the camp experience is designed to be hands-on and lab research activity based. All equipment and supplies are provided for use. Although some participants may have had experience with general LEGO® kits, simple robot building and simple programming assume no prior experience. After introductory training, students will be able to program autonomous robot STEM lab tasks (challenges) and games. Peter Margolis is a California credentialed middle and high school teacher. Academically, he holds three masters degrees in Recreation Administration, MBA, and Education. Currently, he is on the advisory board for the Richmond High School Engineering Academy.

ENGINEERING CAMPS:

Take a “crash course” in Demolition Derby, enter the Sumo Wrestling Competition, design a Mighty Metropolis, challenge the Battle Track, build and race a locomotive faster than a speeding Worm Drive. Use LEGO® building components to explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Children will be given instruction, design challenges, and competitions appropriate to their facility with LEGO® Technic and System components. Each session will include directed projects with instruction, performance-oriented projects with guidance, and free-building time to construct that “Really Great Project” with huge quantities of LEGO®. These are fun, challenging, hands-on, and minds-on camps suitable for LEGO® novices to “maniacs.” Returning students will work on new projects. Faith Cornwall is a guide who teaches her students how to communicate with the greatest yoga teacher they will ever have: their own bodies. Her class, Yoga for Women with Chronic Illness, has three main goals: 1.) Teach students how to feel their bodies. 2.) Teach students how to feel good, how to create those states, and how to enjoy and value them. 3.) Teach students how to feel pain and discomfort without attaching greater meaning to the experience. Having lived with multiple chronic illnesses for over ten years, Faith can personally attest to the effectiveness of this method. She believes that if we choose, our chronic illnesses can teach us not only what our bodies need, but what our whole lives need in order for us to feel great. Faith looks forward to meeting you and helping you on your way back to a better normal.

In depicting the likeness of a character it's all about the nuances of the face and the attitude of the body. This class will teach you to see these nuances and also to understand the "form over form" relationships that create the structure of faces, and to a degree bodies. We will cover perspective in an organic way. We'll start with the photo that you bring when you come to your first class.

Students will learn how to handle acrylic paint including how to mix colors, use of mediums, texture and washes, how to see values and build compositions. Beginning students will initially do exercises; then can choose to paint abstracts, landscapes, botanical studies, still-life or other subjects of their choosing. Continuing or advanced students can start on individual paintings in acrylics or their choice of media at the first class, with instructor working with them individually. Students supply their own paints, brushes, paper and canvas. Bring whatever supplies you already have to first class, where materials will be discussed and list handed out. $4 material fee paid to instructor. DATE

Marilyn Straka for “On the Level” tours will lead our tour to Mission Dolores, the oldest intact Mission in California. Via bus, we enjoy a leisurely drive through the Mission’s distinctive Victorian neighborhoods, parks and shopping districts. The tour will also include photo stops at the Women’s Building & Bethany Center, the largest and most spectacular of the Mission’s 100 murals. Our tour continues with a short walk down 24th Street, the heart of the Latino barrio, where we will enjoy a sample of traditional Mexican agua dulce (tropical fruit juice) and a Mexican pastry. We will then stroll down Balmy Alley, a block-long outdoor museum of public art. Inspired by Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera and Orozco, mural artists have covered the walls of this tiny alley with murals reflecting the needs, hopes and dreams of the immigrant community. After our tour, we will eat lunch at an authentic family-owned Mexican restaurant, San Jalisco. Trip includes transportation and professional tour guide. Lunch is on your own. DAY

Memoir Writing

Age s 5 0 – olde r

a ge s 5 0 – olde r

No More Masks: An Anthology of 20th Century American Women Poets is a glorious gathering of poems. This HarperPerennial book, published in 1993, was edited by Florence Howe.

Students read their own writings to the class for its criticism and evaluation. The teacher adds another voice, pointing out basic principles and approaches to effective non-fiction prose. The idea is to make our memoir writing as vivid and effective as it can be so that it will not be filed somewhere in the dark, but will be read and re-read with enjoyment by children, grandchildren, and even by strangers yet unborn. No one is required to read out loud, or to withhold other kinds of writing, which are welcome. We try for a lowpressure, respectful atmosphere in which embarrassing events and deep emotions may be safely exposed.

R o b e rt S p e rt u s S pac es April 4–July 1 • Opening Reception: April 6, 4–6 pm • Albany Community Center Foyer The photos in this show depict, among other places, a desert in eastern Oregon, an island off the coast of Maine, and a garden in Berkeley. They were taken over a 20-year time span, mostly with special panorama cameras that utilize a moving lens to sweep across the scene. Spertus, has long been enamored with the “wide open spaces” of the Western landscape. While searching for ways to convey the vastness and grandeur of the mountains and deserts that he was exploring he came upon these pan cameras and it was love at first sight. Spertus subsequently discovered that they also “see” small intimate spaces in fresh and interesting ways.

H e r k S c h u st e f f Th e Myst e ry o f Vi s i o n July 3–Sept. 3, 2014 • Opening Reception: July 7, 4–6 pm • Albany Community Center Foyer Father sky and mother earth, art and nature, the abundant beauty of our precious–biospherelandscape teaches grounded balance and proportional interrelatedness. The courteous care of discerning culture once guided mainstream society–Picasso, Segovia, O'Keefe, Diebenkorn. Is there a cultural pathway back to the garden of reverent kinship and empathy with all life? How do we “invite and animate the desirable story” (using Caroline Casey's words)? Perhaps by “becoming agents of beauty and ingenuity”(her words, again). A flourishing world of art could somehow prevail again. The wider role of the artist is to model an esthetic reality which creates an upward attraction on society. 38

Friday, July 25 • 6:30–8:00 pm • $10

Friday, Aug. 29 • 6:15–8:00 pm • $12

Nine banjos, no waiting in this special family friendly concert event with Bill Evans. Tracing the banjo from its West African roots to the New World, Bill performs musical examples from the 1700’s to the present day on a variety of vintage instruments, ranging from an African ekonting to a mid-19th century minstrel banjo, a modern bluegrass banjo and even an electric banjo. From an 18th century African dance tune to the music of the Civil War, and from early 20th century ragtime to folk and bluegrass banjo styles to Bill’s own incredible original music, Bill’s performances illuminate as well as entertain, exposing audiences to over 250 years of American music. In the last two years, Bill has performed all across North America, Canada, England and Germany, appearing with the San Francisco Symphony and on A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor!

Have fun learning a few basic steps to two classic big band dances: the lively swing and the elegant foxtrot! Dance to tunes by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Connick Jr. and local favorite Lavay Smith. This lesson is for beginners and for those who want to brush up on their steps. Instructor: Charlene Gullette Van Ness, who has taught social dance to thousands of bay area people over the past 30 years.
