Play-Well: Bash Em’ Bots

We use LEGO® System and Technic products to teach engineering.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a massive motorized machine? Our Play-Well Engineering instructors guide students in this advanced Play-Well engineering camp, as they re-engineer standard vehicles into mechanized machines that can traverse challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots and take on Play Well Instructors ’ colossal creations.

Take a “crash course” in Demolition Derby, enter the Sumo Wrestling Competition, design a Mighty Metropolis, challenge the Battle Track, build and race a locomotive faster than a speeding Worm Drive. Use LEGO® building components to explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Children will be given instruction, design challenges, and competitions appropriate to their facility with LEGO® Technic and System components. Each session will include directed projects with instruction, performance-oriented projects with guidance, and free-building time to construct that “Really Great Project” with huge quantities of LEGO®. These are fun, challenging, hands-on, and minds-on camps suitable for LEGO® novices to “maniacs.” Returning students will work on new projects. For more information on Play-Well’s Camps, visit www.play-well.org.

Then the machine madness starts. Children will discover how many different machines, simple and complex, we use in our daily lives. Campers will design simple machines using pulleys, wedges, screws and levers and have fun learning how catapults work, then we move on to fun with the Mad Science robots! Each camper will build robots that you can keep, all the while learning the science of robotics. $30 lab fee paid to the instructor includes a take home robot.

Each day campers overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all–their minds. The camp involves a team-based approach to solving problems like, “If you were stranded on a desert island how would you survive?” Save your egg in the egg drop! Campers will build catapults, bottle launchers and even light sabers. Discover and create! $15 material fee paid to instructor.

Founded by professional violinist, string teacher and director Dennie Mehocich, classes at the Academy are for those who want to get the best start in string playing through a classroom ensemble format, learning from an experienced string professional, building a solid foundation in the fundamentals of good string playing. Classes meet daily, M–F for four weeks, ending with a public performance. Ms. Mehocich is a 30+ year Marin Symphony violinist and veteran of the Best of Broadway series in San Francisco, including the five-year run of The Phantom of the Opera. She maintains private teaching studios in both San Rafael and the Albany area. She is owner and manager of the Marin String Quartet & Ensembles, a musical entertainment business.

Kids’ Carpentry Camp

AGES 5–7

AGES 5–12

An animation class designed for little ones. Using action figures and LEGOS® and creating their own cartoons, the kids will learn how to make a character come to life and move. Together they will create and shoot a short film with lots of action and plenty of giggles.

Kids have enjoyed working with wood and learning how to use hand tools in Kids’ Carpentry since 1982. Boys and girls are encouraged to develop problemsolving skills while building their own cool projects using applied math and fractions. They are also introduced to a wide range of woodworking hand tools, safety, and craftsmanship. Projects include supertops, boats, clocks, games, doll furniture, bird-feeders and many other projects to choose from. Our goal is to empower the students to become independent thinkers! This program may be taken year round with different projects offered each session. Our motto is: “Building confidence and teaching with respect and humor in a safe and happy environment.”

Albany Middle School English teacher Abby Skrivan, MA, offers week-long, intensive creative writing workshops for kids. These small classes offer a fun, supportive learning environment for writing, reading and learning from each other. The participants will have the opportunity to form an intimate, student-directed writing community as they develop and deepen their mastery of the writing process. Students will take part in a wide range of writing exercises, including cooperative games, observational writing, poetry, story writing and peer-editing. This unforgettable week will culminate in the writing and production of a bound “literary journal” of their favorite work. Note: Students who attended in the summer of 2011 are encouraged to attend! Second and thirdyear students will deepen the progress made and take their writing to a new level! Attending multiple sessions is also encouraged. Each week will focus on different skills and writing strategies. DATE
