GRAPHIC DESIGN

Final Major Project Branding and identity design for an arts and crafts product creator named Rosie Agar.

Rosie Agar - Branding And Identity Rosie Agar is a friend of mine who makes arts and crafts related products. She likes to sell them using stalls but has never had a personal brand to really make her work stand out. I decided she would be an interesting base for a branding project because she has a very distinctive style and is a good personality to design with. I designed a bold vintage logo design using her own name ‘Rosie Agar’ as the brand name. The name is very stylish and pretty so I kept it simple by making a rose petal with a pencil inside it to represent arts and crafts. The text is a modern vintage font that really has a powerful punch and is easy to read. The overall logo feels floral because of her name ‘rose’ and the colour stands out like someone who is proud of what they do. I applied the logo design to various packaging, tags and envelopes. It works really nicely because of its strong visual and colour mixed in with the lighter, paper backgrounds of the tags and envelopes. The stickers work well as a sealer for packaging giving the products a nice handmade and personal touch.

The Gift A selection of personally illustrated animated gifs based on a beautiful children’s book about a girl’s journey through life.

The Gift - In Animated Gifs As a creative and different type of design project for me to do, I decided to try out animated gifs. I took my favourite children’s storybook and designed my own animated gifs for each scene of the book. I love illustration and I also have developed a growing interest in moving imagery such as gifs, animation and films, so I wanted to put those interests into practice. I really enjoyed this project because it allowed me to develop my illustration and gif making skills. I wanted to tell the story in a beautiful and different way that would be more than just a flat set of drawings. I then put my final set of gifs into a short promotional film for the book itself. I thought this would be a way of showing off the final gifs and also showing how they might be used in a graphic design solution. Overall this project was one of my most successful and enjoyable. It has made me think about illustration and moving imagery more as something I could look into in the future. The story has a very personal theme and it has a strong emotional connection with me so it was very fun to make.

Moo Competition Brief Advert based on the tagline ‘Design Works Wonders’ using various iconic imagery in a sequence.

Moo Competition Brief Moo’s brief was all about thinking of a way to promote and advertise the company with their new tagline ‘Design Works Wonders’. The brief was very open and I could do this in any way I wanted so I decided to do something challenging and interesting. Moo has a very modern and well-designed style and branding so I wanted to keep that in mind for this project. I put my illustration skills to good use and came up with an idea to create an advert using various iconic imagery. I decided a fast paced montage of iconic imagery, stylised to match the laid back mood of Moo, would be a really visually attractive and stimulating advert. The creative part of the advert was the way that each image would somehow fit into the logo so that the logo could stay centred and on screen throughout the advert with only the images changing behind it to the beat of some catchy music. The folding back of the pages between each image gives a small reference to the printing side of the Moo business, and the logo, new tagline and website are clearly displayed at the end of the advert.

Flying Colours York College 2015 Degree Show Promotional Material Poster design to help promote the York College Degree show..

Flying Colours Degree Show 2015 The York College Degree Show needs promoting with some posters and invitations. This project involved coming up with a theme and promoting the degree show. I decided to use the phrase ‘to pass with flying colours’ and named the show ‘Flying Colours’ because I thought it was a very catchy title and also represented the whole show, the college and its students. I had many different ideas for the show to begin with, all of which would have worked well, but in the end I decided the Flying Colours idea was the more interesting solution. I designed many variations of posters based on that theme that were mostly successful and clearly showed the right information and visual communication I intended. The basic idea was to have three separate colourful feathers or whole birds that would represent each area of the show. This would then provide a key for the event with colour coded signage and nametags and so on. All of the poster designs were made with my own illustrations.

Pantone Project ‘Knaresborough In Colour’ This design brief by Pantone was to represent my hometown though the use of Pantone colours.

Pantone Project ‘Knaresborough In Colour’ Leaflet Design This brief was chosen from a mixture of different briefs. I chose the ‘Pantone’ brief because it gave me a chance to do something unique and interesting and relating to my hometown. The aim of the project was to represent my hometown in any way I wanted using Pantone colours. My hometown of Knaresborough provided a great setting for this project and I created an information leaflet with my own illustrations using various colour schemes taken from the wide range of Pantone colours. I named the leaflet ‘K in colour’ and worked out a simple folded leaflet layout that also had a map on the back directing people to each important Knaresborough attraction. The illustrations bring Knaresborough to life while also keeping true to the historical side of Knaresborough. The colours stand out and make the potentially dull leaflet become much more interesting and more of a keepsake.

2015 Calendar Design Brief A lighthearted calendar design for Domino’s Pizza, handmade and designed with matching seasonal toppings and vouchers.

Domino’s Pizza Calendar For this project I decided to make an unusual type of calendar based on Domino’s Pizza. I wanted to take the concept of a normal flat boring calendar and flip it on its head by making a light-hearted 3D calendar that looked visually fun and different. The idea came to me when I was eating my favourite food for lunch one afternoon and thought to myself: this would be a really cool looking calendar. I designed the calendar to be multifunctional. It has a notepad on the inside of each slice that also acts as the main calendar with the dates on each page. The pizza is split up into 4 sections like a 4 seasons pizza with Dominos toppings on them. Information about the toppings is displayed on the side of each slice. Each slice also contains a special Dominos Voucher at the bottom ready to use for the next month. The whole calendar was hand made and took a long time to figure out, but was worth the effort.

Animalisms Project Brief ‘Talking With Animals’ Editorial design brief to create a book or magazine based of popular animal related sayings and phrases.

Magazine Illustrations

The Final Magazine

The final design for this magazine was a mini game where the viewer could find the odd one out in each illustration. The interactive version would allow you to click on it to turn to the next page. Each saying has information about it and what the saying means.

Cragside Branding Brief A brand and identity for the imaginary log cabin holiday destination Cragside, with suitable applications of the logo such as leaflets and merchandise.

Branding And Identity Brief ‘Crystal Clear’ I chose to re-brand Whitby Glass by giving it a fresh new look and name to promote its popular glass animal products.

Cragside Branding Project Cragside is a made up holiday place providing log cabins and the promise of outdoor adventure. The project was to create a brand identity for Cragside. Keeping the outdoors, nature, wildlife, walking, adventure, fun and family in mind I came up with a logo that tried to get that message across. The logo is two footprints side by side overlapping each other to form a loose heart shape. The logo is bold, bright and fun with a friendly look and style. It has a muddy texture over it that brings it to life and the strong colour scheme of orange, red and yellow make it eye-catching the adventurous. It reminds you of the holidays and the summer when family’s would most likely be going to Cragside.

Crystal Clear Branding Project My pride and joy is my collection of glass animals that I have collected for many years. My collection currently stands at 105 animals, the majority from my favourite gift shop in Whitby named ‘Whitby Glass’. As a branding idea for a project I chose this small gift shop to rename and give it a new identity. I decided to focus on the glass animals mostly even though the gift shop sells other items, because the glass animals are what the shop is well known for. The name I gave it was ‘Crystal Clear’ because it tells you that the shop is most likely going to sell things that are delicate. It also is a reference to the sea and water being crystal clear, and also the phrase crystal clear meaning ‘very easy to understand’. The logo is made from three glass fish representing the sea and glass. The logo is clear, simple, and elegant and also has a splash of colour similar to that on the more modern glass animals.

Advertising Lucky Voice Brief Promoting and raising awareness of the karaoke party venue company Lucky Voice and its app.

Lucky Voice Viral Advert Lucky Voice needed to become more noticed by a more youthful, modern audience. My idea was to create an advert that would show a fun, humours and friendly style. The series of adverts would show a very stereotypically boring place suddenly becoming a karaoke party with random strangers getting together to perform a flash mob style sing along. The songs used in the performance would still be very classic karaoke tracks but would be sang and enjoyed by both young and older people. The surprise and the shock from people not involved in the performance would provide its own hilarity and possible make the advert become more viral and passed around. The Lucky Voice’s bright pink colour scheme would be shown in the adverts by people wearing t-shirts and using microphones in that colour. The words ‘press, play, sing’ would show at the end of each advert encouraging people to purchase the app as well as use the venue. The company logo and website would also be shown at the end of each sequence.

DON’T TAKE IT TO HEART #Wear The Trousers

Mini ‘One Day’ Design Projects A selection of mini advertising tasks done over the course of one day each. Encouraging quick-fire thinking and solutions.

The Royal Albert Hall Poster Design This task involved creating a small poster campaign about the Royal Albert Hall. The idea behind these posters is that the people using it are the most important feature. Without people supporting and using the hall, there would be no reason for it and the public are the ones who give it life and status. When researching the hall I noticed the seating plan looked like it might make a visually interesting design for a poster. I played around with the shape and chose a royal red colour scheme to show off its importance. I ended up with these very simplistic posters ideas showing the hall, its seating plan and the tagline ‘here because of you’. The idea is simple, to the point and has a modern style that interests the viewer.

Oasis Signage Design This task was to design some signage for Oasis giving it a modern and youthful style. My idea was to add the hashtag ‘wear the trousers’ and to give the designs a colourful and bold look that catches your eye and draws attention.

Pot Hole Campaign Posters Potholes are one of the most annoying things on the road, yet many people just avoid them and never report them. Reporting them could really help with the problem and make roads a lot easier and safer to drive on. This task was based on this idea and how we could create a campaign to persuade people to report potholes when they see them. My idea for this task was to produce some poster designs that could be placed on billboards that would raise awareness of the issue. Potholes are ugly things that can spoil the roads so I used this in my designs by ruining the beautiful backgrounds on each poster. The idea is that people will then understand how frustrating they are and become more visually aware of the roads. I used a quick and catchy phrase of ‘stop, think, report it’ and included a link to a website where you can report the potholes. Traffic Warden Poster Design This task was light-hearted design project to try and promote a positive reaction about traffic wardens. Traffic Wardens are normally seen as the bad guys and people generally dislike them because of the harsh nature of their jobs. I wanted to show the exact opposite of this by portraying them as the heroes I’m a big film fan so when I think of heroes I think of the important figures from movies that give out help and guidance and are strong and powerful. So with a little Photoshop editing I placed these big film icons in traffic warden outfits. The strong presence of these characters makes even a normal Traffic Warden seem epic and heroic. The bold background makes you think of roads and also catches your eye making the subject matter much more fun and interesting. The overall humor of the idea makes Traffic Wardens appear more like your friends instead of your enemy.
