ARCHITECTURE INTERIORS & DESIGN
Albert Angel cultivates the architecture of well-being; and with his cross-disciplinary team develops a global design approach which put geometry, symmetry, light and organic energy at the heart of every project. The journey of Albert Angel, architect and nomadic designer, is influenced by the Congo where he was born, Belgium and South Africa where he studied architecture at the University of Cape Town, before moving to New York. After working for ten years for some of New York’s renowned architecture and design firms, he founded his own studio in 2005. Currently, Albert Angel is building projects ranging from retail, residential to hotels and spas in New York, Miami, Kenya, Mauritius and Indonesia.
YEAR 2012
PROJECT Baystone Boutique Hotel & Spa LOCATION Grand Baie, Mauritius TYPE Boutique Hotel & Spa, Restaurant & Lounge
SCOPE Architecture, Interiors and Lighting, Furniture Design
PROGRAM 16 en-suite rooms, 3 suites, Spa, Restaurant & Lounge, Pool deck & private beach FLOOR AREA 4,000 m2
The 13-suite boutique-hotel and spa is a contemporary reflection of its astounding natural surroundings. Unlike most tropical hotel resorts, this project draws inspiration from the pristine waters and beach directly facing the property, and turns the existing architectural shell into a flowing, peaceful and immersive hotel experience, an extension of the beach it sits upon. The interiors are a poetic and metaphorical journey inspired by the sea: wave-shaped walls, organic forms, wind-shaped sofas and floating LED chandeliers evoke an underwater wonderland. On the exterior, the decorative wave cladding tumbles away from the volcanic rock facade toward the sea.

YEAR 2014 PROJECT Six Senses Retreat & Spa LOCATION Doha, Qatar SCOPE Master Plan, Architecture, Engineering and Interiors PROGRAM 80 Guest Suites, Spa Pavilion, 3 restaurants, Private coves featuring private beaches, 3 common swimming pools FLOOR AREA 56,000 m2 SITE AREA 4 ha.
The Six Senses Retreat & Spa in Doha turns its site - a barren reclaimed island - into an other-worldly luxury retreat by drawing inspiration from the desert landscapes of Qatar. This series of twelve pavilions which accommodate guest suites, spa facilities, restaurant and other amenities emerge as a constructed desert landscape; at the center of each pavilion is a lush garden oasis. Each oasis creates a terrarium-like temperate habitat, and offers guests intimacy with private coves and secluded beaches. Guests navigate between the oases for different hotel experiences: each journey is designed as a meditative path, carefully sculpted within the landscape and offering select views of the city and beyond. The island itself becomes an oasis in the city, an escape from the surrounding towering developments.

YEAR 2010 PROJECT Konoba Restaurant Bar & Lounge LOCATION Mahe Seychelles TYPE Restaurant, Bar & Lounge SCOPE Architecture, Interiors and Lighting, Furniture Design
PROGRAM Restaurant, Bar, Cigar Lounge, Dance floor, Wine Cellar, Outdoor dining FLOOR AREA 550 m2 SITE AREA 1,200 m2
Inspired by the client’s love for boats and our fascination for the underwater life of the Seychelles, Konoba is an extension of the marina where it is located. This versatile lounge, bar and restaurant interior is sculpted by hull-like shapes and geometric wooden patterns, evoking maritime signal shapes and celebrating the art of boat-building. A sculptural shoal of 8,000 stainless steel pieces leads from the entrance to the main space where it culminates in a massive swirling element hanging from the coral-inspired decorative beams above the bar. Anchored in the casual local island lifestyle, the space flows easily from indoors to outdoors, while detailed lighting designs and elements take on dramatically different characteristics from day to night.

YEAR 2009 PROJECT Bar Artisanal Restaurant & Bar LOCATION New York City U.S.A. TYPE Restaurant & Bar SCOPE Architecture, Interiors and Lighting, Furniture Design FLOOR AREA 300 m2
Located on the main floor of a newly constructed Hilton Hotel, Bar Artisanal exhibits a sense of timelessness and connotes the grandeur of public spaces of prewar New York. While the dramatic aesthetic of checkered ceramic tiles underfoot and elegant iron latticework overhead transports the patron thru time, the use of different tile sizes, oversized chandeliers, and mirrors on ceilings create false perspectives thru space. These simple moves are part of a broader exploration of material and effect to create intimate spaces within the desired open floor plan of this 300 square meter space. These effects further create vignettes around unique program elements within the overall space: the bar at the front of the space is framed with an iron curtain, a pizza counter lends closer interaction with the kitchen, and a small retail outpost. These smaller vignettes then amount to a larger sense of hub, and fulfill the sense of a grand central food station. copyright albert angel llc

YEAR 2005 PROJECT 24 Prince LOCATION New York City U.S.A. TYPE Restaurant & Bar FLOOR AREA 140 m2
This small New York restaurant is a home away from home, meant to feel like a comfortable apartment interior. The design draws on references to conventional home styling: the cushioned banquettes are the room’s sofas, the imprinted logo as wood inlays are tablecloths, and a ‘ladder to the attic’ adds whimsical structure to the space, separating front from back. The back bar’s cupboards evoke medicinal cabinets, which close during the day to keep the alcohol from site. The custom wall-paper and glow of the stripped custom lights above the bar add warmth to the space, as does the color palette of pistachio green, azure blue and white oak.

YEAR 2012 PROJECT Tha’lion Beauty & Spa LOCATION Grand Baie Mauritius TYPE Commercial SCOPE Interiors and Lighting, Furniture Design
PROGRAM 4 therapy rooms, 1 couples’ room, 1 beauty room, 1 floatation tank by OceanFloat©, 1 hammam
FLOOR AREA 200 m2
If the rough facade of the Baystone Hotel is reminiscent of an oyster shell, the Thal’ion Spa at the Baystone Hotel is the pearl. Created around the concept of total immersion and as an extension of the underwater other-worldliness of the hotel, the spa becomes an experience unto itself. Guests navigate through intimate LED-lit spaces defined only by curving walls, almost swimming between the hammam, floatation tank, therapy room and massage room. Soft lighting and a variety of soft textures compliment the sounds of waterfall to further cocoon the guest in this hidden gem of sensory delight.

YEAR 2014 PROJECT One General Mathenge Condominium LOCATION Nairobi Kenya TYPE Luxury Condominium SCOPE Master Plan, Architecture, Interiors and Lighting PROGRAM 44 apartments FLOOR AREA 21,350 m2 SITE AREA 5.2 ha. FLOORS 8 Stories
The immensely beautiful green valley site, is not only the inspiration for this 44 unit condominium project, it - is - the project. The series of 7-story terraced buildings step forward and backward at each level, reshaping the valley’s contours. While offering greater privacy for each unit, these shifts also allow a generous garden terrace overlooking the valley and create a new type of urban dwelling: garden villa condominiums. These lush garden terraces become a reconstructed face of the valley, cascading to the river which flows at the site’s boundary. The unique V-shaped footprint of each building allows for a new type of open plan configuration, featuring two wings and private lightwells as well as largely unobstructed views to the valley. As the units move forward and backward, they meet and separate across the project’s entire elevation creating views through the site and through the building. The common areas at the lowest level with pools, decks and other recreational spaces become a further meshing of buildings and valley. copyright albert angel llc
