Flowing Museum

A concept of continuous exhibition space applied to museums

CONCEPT In most museums, exhibits are displayed in separate rooms in different stories, and the structure of museum buildings usually fit in the category of cuboid. To provide a new visiting experience, I create a continuous space considering “attention”, “rest”, and “emotion”.

· ATTENTION When visitors appreciating art in traditional museums, their attentions as well as a perception of coherence can be disturbed as they walk between different stories. To prevent this disturbance and better preserve the coherence within exhibits, stories should be cancelled and a continuous space should be developed instead. High

FOCUS

Low

· REST Rests are needed during a visit and people take it randomly. Along a linear continuous space, much rest spaces are needed in order to satisfy this requirement, yet causing a redundancy. To better integrate rest spaces while maintaining the continuity, a bending continuous space, inspired from protein structures, is applied. In this way, visitors can go back to any portion of the exhibition at any time and retrospect or resume right from where they take rest.

Inspiration from protein Linear amino acid can fold into 3D structural protein and form a binding locus at the center. This allows amino acids from different portion on the chain to be connected to the locus directly. Inspired by this, previous linear continuous space is bent similarly to an amino acid chain, making direct connection of different portion of the continuous space and creating one common rest space at the center like a locus.

3D structure of a myoglobin. Linear amino acid chain folds and forms a binding locus at the center.

¡ EMOTION Unlike identical space, which can cause visual and emotional fatigue due to its monotony, variable space can lead to different visiting experience. By constantly changing spacing arrangement, visitors can receive diverse impressions walking along the continuous space previously created.

Triple Yard

A reconstruction of Siheyuan, retrieving courtyard life in old days

Brief History of Siheyuan courtyard - Layout and Communication Function The vicissitude of the courtyard reflects not only changes in living pattern but also those in communication. Initially, single courtyard provided housing for family only and allowed them to have intimate conversation. Later, it became a place for acquainted neighbors to share and exchange information amiably. Finally, habitants became people without any relationship and only sporadic chitchat happened or even no communication in the courtyard.

People flood into cities after 1949. Owners of Siheyuan started to lease rooms for extra money and government collected and assigned rooms for different families. The Siheyuans were reconstructed to accomodate more people and the courtyard became a space for neighbors.

After experiencing baby boom and Cultural Revolution, population in the city increased tremendously, yet housing was wanting. This led to a huge size of family living in a small spaced room. As a result, people started to occupy public places in the courtyard to expand their living space.

Some habitants began to move into buildings and house were sold or rent to immigrants. Some habitants split house into smaller parts and passed it to children. The government's policy on housing compensation triggered habitants to build more houses. Different people live in the same courtyard.

15

Analysis of Current Problems The living condition is inconvenient in current courtyard. Habitants usually suffer from congestion due to historically occupied illegal and temporary constructions and lacking sufficient living facilities. The only public space is the narrow path, making daily movement as well as evacuation under emergency difficult. Sporadic

Storage - fire source and block evacuation route

Dwelling - low quality consturction

A common way of transform is to completely remove households, demolish extra construction, and rebuild Siheyuan into its traditional form. However, there are some problems within this method. 1. Compensation to households is expensive 2. Moving to suburb area against households’ willingness 3. Recovered Siheyuan will be unaffordable for working class The reconstruction aims to solve these problems in situ and improve living condition by introducing facilities such as bathroom and kitchen into every household and bring back communication in the courtyard.

16

Kitchen - cooking fumes pollution

17

Triple Yard In Triple Yard, each household contains three yards and each yard corresponds to a communication function. Sporadic yard located in the middle of the whole courtyard, an Intimate yard is beside the house, and an Acquainted yard, a balcony, on the second floor of the loft. The area of each Triple Yard is tantamount to that of the former household, including both legal and illegal rooms. This is achieved by inserting a loft into former house, which reduces ground area occupied and thus allows more public area. Through the construction of Triple Yard, historic wooden structure, brick wall, and decorations are well reserved as well as the texture of the city.

From Chaos to Order

A Study of Noodle

Inspiration from noodles

In China, people eat noodle with chopsticks. When noodle is in the plate, every piece of noodle tangles in chaos. When it's picked up by chopsticks, upper part of noodle hangs and become straight line which is in order, lower part remain in the plate. Before put it into the mouth, noodle on the chopsticks turn into ordered line.

The process of picking up is the most amazing part. Chaos is at the bottom; order is at the top. Imagining stay within noodle and look around, like a diced meat of sauce. There will be a view of transition from chaos to order.

28

Three lines are tangled at bottom and pulled by six stretched sur faces randomly, forming three primary spaces and three subordinate spaces which chaotically cross. Then, three stretched surfaces pull lines with counterforce at the top, creating an ordered and geometrical space, tabling the whole structure.

Magic Mushroom

An imaginary ecological reconstruction of future business area

Site Introduction Jianwai SOHO and Yintai Center are located in the south of Beijing Central Business District (CBD), which are on the site of 0.2 square kilometers. This area is one of the busiest urban centers integrating residential areas, offices, recreational facilities, and retail outlets.

Prospection of Future Business Area In the future, this area can satisfy the demands of both living and working, yet each building contains different specific functions. Thus, making connection between buildings and creating convenience for inter-region traffic become crucial. In addition, air pollution has become a serious problem in Beijing. Although regulation and policies such as restricting fossil fuel vehicles and moving polluted factories have been applied, there is still a long way to go to completely solve the problem. Moreover, with increasing attention on health, a better outdoors place for exercising will be desired. Finally, despite the convenience created by Internet for communication, people are actually more isolated and lonely, thus a place that can provide daily faceto-face communication will be necessary to bring back people together.

Under unfavorable weather condition for the diffusion of pollution, smog will be remained static to the ground’s surface, causing harm to people outdoors and indoors.

Upper air flows faster than air near the surface, leading to pressure difference. Air near the surface can be pumped up through hollow columns. Also, water can spray on the surface to absorb and purify air.
