PRESIDENT’S REPORT I hope that everyone is having a good start to spring; our bees are out of the building and our first round of pollen patties and strips is almost done. I feel cautiously optimistic with where our winter loss is at, and combined with a strengthened honey price this may be the bounce back year many of us needed.

The office will also be sending out posters about the APP that you can put up for your workers in your accommodations.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to participate in the recent online Integrated Pest Management Workshop that took place in March. We had a great range of speakers and despite the challenges of the online format, our office staff did a wonderful job. I would like to thank all the presenters for taking the time to share their research and expertise with our beekeepers. I really look forward to being able to meet in person at this year's AGM, convention and trade show event that is happening at the Fantasyland Hotel this November 24, 25, and 26, 2021.

2021 Virtual Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Workshop Recap By Jeff Kearns, Research Technician, ABC

hank you to all the beekeepers, bee enthusiasts, industry guests, and sponsors that made our first and hopefully last - entirely virtual IPM Workshop a success. With over 75 guests in attendance and participants joining us from across Alberta and as far away as Nova Scotia and California, the IPM provided a valuable learning opportunity for beekeepers, sharing the latest strategies on managing the health and sustainability of honey bee colonies.
Dr. Cook discussed the urgent need to develop additional commercially available miticides for use in the IPM of Varroa mites. Mainly due to the development of resistance, the currently available arsenal of synthetic chemical options for Varroa control is now dwindling.
This year’s program covered varroacide resistance, research on new acaracides, Nosema, honey bee microbiota, viruses, IPM, and more. Guests were able to engage with presenters and ask questions, network and socialise virtually, and bid on some great beekeeping items including queens, gift certificates to BeeMaid, household items, and more as part of our online charity auction, with all proceeds from the auction donated to the Alberta Technology Transfer Program. A huge thank-you goes out to all our presenters for taking time to share knowledge and improve our understanding of issues related to bee health. One of those compounds may move into field trials this year, however, there is no timeline on when or if this compound will be registered for use in bee colonies. The overview of Dr. Cook’s research into finding novel varroacides (synthetic, natural, or molecular modifiers) that target various Varroa life-stages with different methods of action also highlighted the rigorous and complex process involved in getting a product into the hands of beekeepers. The “pipeline” from discovery and development to registration and commercialization of an acaricide is a slow-moving, step-by-step undertaking which requires a great deal of work, dedication, and funding.

microbiota, and how the protective microbiomes existing within them define a new category of social immunity he has termed the hygienesphere.
“A New Acaricidal Compound Against Varroa” was the title of Dr. Pernal’s presentation detailing how a novel substance, discovered by chemist Dr. Erika Plettner (S.F.U.) while studying cabbage loopers, has moved into field trials (BC, Alberta, and Israel) for use as a Varroa mite control.
A few examples from Dr. Anderson’s ambitious five-year research plan include a project with Randy Oliver to test two commercial probiotic formulations (although he is sceptical that adding probiotics will be effective at colony level), and working with Marla Spivak to study how propolis interacts with the microbiome to produce increased resistance to disease. One project that may interest beekeepers is the creation of a database of larval disease microbiomes and corresponding high-resolution digital images of the diseases at various stages. The data and images will be used to train AI (artificial intelligence) to identify and predict larval disease states, and Dr. Anderson hopes that the project will result in the ability to diagnose early stages of brood disease using a photograph from a smartphone.

While 3c{3,6} may lack a catchy name, it has performed effectively against Varroa in the laboratory, and compared well with thymol in those studies. Having moved into early stages of field studies, the substance continues to show promise for its ability to cause significant mite drop and suppress mite population growth, while also being safe for bees and beekeepers. While the mode of action is not known, 3c{3,6} disrupts the host finding behaviour of the mites (their ability to locate food) and causes paralysis - in either case the mites are not feeding on bees and starve to death.
With thousands of queen bees expected to arrive in Alberta from around the globe in the coming weeks, Dr. McAfee’s presentation, “Queen Failure: Two Years of Surveying BC Queens and Potential Causal Factors”, was both timely and informative. Quality queen bees that have been well-mated can carry enough sperm to last for several years of laying eggs, however, the process of shipping queens may expose the queens to temperature swings that can have lasting negative effects on a queen’s performance.
Field trials are scheduled to continue over the next three years, with much work still to be done designing a release device, determining placement of the treatment, determining the release rate and total dosage requirements, and more. Stay tuned for updates from Dr. Pernal.
Dr. McAfee defines the “Goldilocks Zone” (the safe temperature zone for shipping queen bees) as 15°C to 38°C, outside of that safe zone temperature stress can kill honey bee sperm. Roughly 10% of the shipments Dr. McAfee studied experienced extreme temperature events, and she determined that sperm viability can be noticeably affected in queens after as little as 2 hours of exposure to extreme temperatures.

This suggests “that there’s a trade-off between the queens being able to fight off infections and being able to maintain their stored sperm”

Year of the Beekeeper
A: Glyn grew up breeding queen bees at his family's apiary in

New Zealand. His parents were commercial queen breeders and he and his 4 siblings started helping with beekeeping tasks at young ages. He went on to study biology and chemistry at the University of Canterbury, where he met Shevelle, a Canadian biologist studying abroad. After moving to Alberta, Glyn worked as an Inspector for Alberta Agriculture and quickly noticed a lack of local queen bees. With a strong background in queen production, Glyn and Shevelle founded Revival Queen Bees, an apiary dedicated to supplying locally produced queens to Alberta beekeepers. They also sell queen cells, virgins, and a small amount of honey and other merchandise.

Q: What’s a typical day like for you? A: We usually get started working the bees as soon
as it is warm enough in the morning. Most of our time is spent in the mating nucs picking queens and placing cells. We also graft and move cells from starters to finishing hives most days. We run a small number of hives for honey production, so harvest time is particularly busy for us.

A: Watching how industrious the bees can be. We also enjoy being able to work outdoors.

What Does the New U.S. Ruling on Oxalic Acid in Honey Mean?
It is important to understand the difference between the goals of the FDA and the EPA, and the difference between a tolerance level and a pesticide label. The role of the FDA is to protect human and animal health. One of the ways that they do this is through enforcing food tolerances. A tolerance is the maximum amount of a specific pesticide that is permitted to be on a certain food that will be marketed in the US. This tolerance level is set by the EPA (https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-tolerances/aboutpesticide-tolerances). The goal of a tolerance is to ensure that foods are safe for human and animal consumption. Set tolerance levels take into consideration all of the different foods a particular pesticide can be on. For example, if pesticide X is labeled to be used on both cherries and apples, the EPA would establish residue limits (tolerances) individually on both cherries and apples that are low enough to account for the fact that some people are going to be eating both types of fruit, ingesting pesticide X from multiple sources. These tolerances are regulated through targeted sampling. The USDA and FDA will analyze food samples, and if they are above tolerance levels, they may take regulatory action. Usually they will contact the state department of agriculture to conduct investigations, and foods with illegal residues are considered adulterated and typically seized. An exemption from the requirement of a tolerance means that the FDA will not measure a food product for that particular pesticide. So, this recent ruling for oxalic acid in honey means that the FDA and USDA will not test honey for the presence of oxalic acid, or if oxalic acid is found during the sampling of honey, it will not result in any regulatory action. While too much oxalic acid can be dangerous, it does show up naturally in a lot of foods,

On February 23, 2021, the FDA finalized a ruling that establishes an exemption from the requirement of a tolerance for residues of oxalic acid in honey and honeycomb. For many, this was no surprise, as it has been in the works (and open for public comment) for several months. However, the announcement created a stir among beekeeping forums and groups, resulting in a lot of attention, and unfortunately a lot of misinformation being shared. The purpose of this post is to explain this ruling and what it means for you and your bees. The short answer is that this ruling does not change the way you use oxalic acid (OA) in your hives—it does not mean you can use OA with honey supers on. The long answer that explains the reasoning is below. 10

so it makes a lot of sense for the FDA not to look for it specifically in honey. This is great! This means that if you are selling honey or beeswax, and someone tests it, you are not going to get all tied up with restrictions or regulations if oxalic acid were to show up in it. The FDA’s goal is to protect human health by limiting the amount of residues on certain foods through the use of tolerances. These tolerances are enforced by testing foods. An exemption from a tolerance means they will not be testing those food products for that particular pesticide. The EPA on the other hand, has broader interests than just human health. The EPA is also concerned about how pesticides are used (not just how much ends up on final food products), which is why they enforce pesticide label restrictions. A pesticide label describes many things such as what should be worn while applying the pesticide, if it should not be mixed with other pesticides, and how it should be applied. Pesticide labels are written by the manufacturer of the pesticide and approved by the EPA. Labels relate to tolerances in that if used according to the label, there should be no illegal residues. So tolerances are basically one tool to ensure pesticides are applied according to the label.
pests develop resistance. Use Oxalic acid as part of your Varroa mite management strategy not as your only mite management strategy. • Oxalic acid does not work through the cappings (Rademacher et al. 2006). During peak summer, when honey supers are on there is usually a lot of capped brood in the hive, and most of the Varroa will be in the capped brood. If you treat at this time, you will be missing most of the mites. Some beekeepers try to get past this by treating many times, but that can be damaging. Any time you treat it is disruptive and damaging to bees, so it is important to time treatments so you are maximizing damage to mites while minimizing damage to bees. Otherwise you will cause unnecessary harm to your colony. • When honey supers are on there are often a lot of open brood cells as well. Oxalic acid is known to cause damage to open brood (Terpin et al. 2019). Damaging brood during honey flow can weaken the colony later in the summer. • We already have treatments that are labeled for use when honey supers are on and that work through the cappings—Mite Away Quick Strips and Formic Pro. If you live in a place where mite levels get high during honey production, use these products instead.
The label for oxalic acid currently states “Do not use when honey supers are in place.” As long as this label is in place, it is the law, regardless of FDA tolerance rulings. However, that doesn’t mean that this label restriction is permanent. Manufacturers are constantly updating their pesticide labels as new research is done or as situations change. This means that it could be possible that the manufacturer may submit a new label to the EPA for approval in the future, especially if there is new research. But for now, that has not happened, so do not use OA while honey supers are on. If you want to make a change regarding pesticide use in honey bees, it is important to know who the manufacturer is of the labeled product, as they are the ones that will be changing the label. You can contact them, and you can also support the researchers who are working to study the effects of pesticides on honey bees and honey so that there is more scientific evidence to drive change.
Oxalic acid is still a useful tool for beekeepers to keep Varroa levels under control. OA is the best tool to use when colonies are broodless. For example, it can be applied to new packages, and it is often used with success to clean up mites in the fall after bees have stopped brood rearing. Some beekeepers have also used OA in conjunction with splits and queen cells when they are making increases, to reduce the mites in newly created hives.
The final important regulatory consideration is that pesticide use and registration is done at the state level. Your state may restrict OA use, or they may not enforce it in all situations. It is important to understand rulings in your state.

From the beekeepers’ perspective, however, these label limits are not that restricting, because Oxalic Acid is not that useful when colonies are in honey production (and there are other options for use at that time). Some points to consider if you were hoping to use OA during honey production: • It is important to use more than one treatment when managing mites. Using only multiple applications of a single pesticide like oxalic acid over and over is how

Old-Fashioned Ham With Brown Sugar Honey Mustard Glaze

1 Sunterra Market Gammon ham 1 cup unsweetened apple juice or apple cider 1/2 cup whole grain Dijon mustard 2/3 cup (packed) golden brown sugar 1/4 cup honey
Preparation Preheat oven to 325°F. Place ham in large roasting pan. Pour apple juice over ham. Cover ham and roasting pan completely with heavy-duty foil, sealing tightly at edges of pan. Bake ham until instant-read thermometer inserted into center of ham registers 145°F, about 3 hours. Remove foil and parchment from ham. Drain and discard liquids from roasting pan. Using long sharp knife, score fat in 1-inch-wide, 1/4-inch-deep diamond pattern. Spread mustard evenly over fat layer on ham. Pat brown sugar over mustard coating, pressing firmly to adhere. Drizzle honey evenly over. Bake until ham is well glazed, spooning any mustard and sugar glaze that slides into roasting pan back over ham, about 30 minutes. Transfer ham to serving platter; let cool at least 45 minutes. Slice ham and serve slightly warm or at room temperature.

Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions’ general manager, Tom Steve participated in the provincial agriculture and forestry sector table that contributed to the plan. To achieve growth in agriculture, the plan focuses on core areas including: attracting investment to expand and diversify valueadded processing, increasing access to key global markets and expanding infrastructure to increase primary production. • The Government of Alberta has set a goal to increase agrifood exports to $16.6 billion by 2022, a 43 per cent increase from 2018 that totaled $11.6 billion. In September 2020, it was announced that more agricultural representatives will be sent to the province’s trade offices in U.S., Europe, Mexico and Singapore to help meet this goal.
On November 26, 2020 the Government of Alberta announced two initiatives to help reduce the cost and time for Albertans to become Class 1 drivers. The Experience and Equivalency Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program will recognize the experience and knowledge that farm workers and workers in other industries gain through work experience. The program will recognize Class 3 drivers with a minimum two years of experience and allow them to take an abbreviated MELT program, requiring 40 hours of training compared to the 113 hours required for the full Class 1 drivers MELT program. Team Alberta and other industry partners have advocated for measures to streamline the process for farm workers to obtain their Class 1 MELT licences such as eliminating barriers to cost and time associated with Class 1 licencing.
• In October 2020, investments in irrigation infrastructure were announced between the Government of Alberta, the Infrastructure Bank of Canada and eight irrigation districts. These investments into new irrigation projects totaling $815 million will convert open canals into underground pipelines, modernize existing systems and open new reservoirs that will allow for expansion in farming areas. Additionally, $10 million has been invested in irrigation rehabilitation projects for maintenance and infrastructure improvement. • Invest Alberta has been created as Alberta’s first crown corporation dedicated to investment attraction. They have named agriculture a key sector supporting investments in valueadded processing.
A second program, Driving Back to Work will cover up to 90 per cent of the costs associated with obtaining a Class 1 commercial truck license for unemployed Albertans. This program aims to help Albertans pursue a career in the commercial trucking industry while also working to fill an expected shortage of 3,600 commercial truck drivers by 2023.
Bill 47, Ensuring Safety and Cutting Red Tape Act In November 2020, Alberta’s Minister of Labour and Immigration, Jason Copping tabled omnibus Bill 47, Ensuring Safety and Cutting Red Tape Act. The legislation will roll back changes made under the previous government to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the Workers Compensation Act.
