MEET THE 2024 ABC TECH TRANSFER TEAM
The Alberta Beekeepers Commission (ABC) Tech Transfer Program (TTP) is a unique initiative that offers Alberta beekeepers support, colony health diagnostic services, and science backed education and training. The TTP aims to empower beekeepers to make informed management decisions that optimize the health of their bees and improve their overall beekeeping operation.
The TTP was created by the ABC in 2019 following a request from Alberta eligible producers to fill a critical gap in services that support the health and sustainability of the commercial beekeeping industry in Alberta.
The ABC is proud to introduce the 2024 TTP Team who will be out in the field this beekeeping season.
Each member will be in the field working hard to sample colonies for all those who have registered to participate in the Colony Health Monitoring (CHM) program. Give us a wave if you see any of our TTP team members in the field!
Learn more about our new Summer Techs!
SEANNA WENGRYN - Hello beekeepers! My name is Seanna, and I am a recent graduate of the University of Alberta with a BSc in Animal Health and a Major in Companion and Performance Animals. I have the privilege of spending this upcoming summer as a technician with the ABC TTP, with the hopes of attending the University of Calgary’s Veterinary Medicine program this upcoming fall as part of the Class of 2028. Throughout my time in university, I grew a strong passion for agriculture and working with production animals, particularly cattle and horses. What surprised and encouraged me to pursue a summer position working with bees was learning that bees are considered ‘large’ production animals too, as they produce that sweet food product we all love! Bees
The TTP has evolved over the last four years and continues to develop to ensure it delivers value to beekeepers and responds to the changing needs of the industry.
If you are looking to improve the health of your colonies and take advantage of the valuable services the TTP offers, please check out all the details on our website, or reach out to us at ttp@albertabeekeepers.ca to learn more!

are often regarded as a grey area in animal health, which has fascinated and helped me expand my horizons on the typical understanding of husbandry and welfare. Through this summer position, I hope to bring a strong voice to the beekeeping world and encourage more interaction between beekeepers and veterinarians.
MAREN VICKERS - Hi, my name is Maren, and I am one of the new TTP summer technicians working with the bees this summer. I am currently going into my final year of a Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree with a major in biological sciences. While I have taken many entomology and integrated pest management classes through the University of Alberta, I am excited to further this knowledge in the field to see what it’s really all about! Bees have always been an interest of mine so getting to work with these amazing organisms will cross a dream off my bucket list. I stumbled across the TTP while looking for a research related summer position and applied right away; in the past I was involved in research surrounding mites of a variety of species, and since the TTP had ongoing Varroa projects I knew this was the job for me. Maybe this will be the inspiration for a Masters project? All in all, I can’t wait to see what’s out there and keep learning along the way!
The Bee Louse
by Jeff Kearns, University of LethbridgeBraula coeca, also known as the bee louse or the Braula fly, is a small, wingless fly that was first identified in Germany in 1818, by Christian Ludwig Nitzsch, a professor of zoology at the University of Halle. Bee lice, which are not actually lice, can be found in much of the world and are not generally considered to be an economic threat to beekeeping operations.
Often mistaken for varroa mites due to their similar size and reddishbrown colour, adult bee lice are roughly 1.5mm long and 0.75mm wide, and covered in hair. An insect, Braula coeca have six legs and a different body shape when compared with the eight-legged varroa.
Like varroa mites, Braula can be found residing on worker bees, drones and queen bees (several may be on a queen). While varroa and Braula both maintain symbiotic relationships with honey bees, the bee louse is more of a commensal (think of the remora fish that attach themselves to sharks) than a parasite. The bee louse simply clings to the head of a bee and steals a little food when needed, it has even developed a method to get the bees to supply food on demand:
“When the louse wishes to feed it goes to the bee's mouth, where the motions of its feet, armed with bent claws, produces a tickling sensation, perhaps disagreeable to its host, but at least provoking some movement of the buccal organs, which slightly open and release a small drop of honey which the louse at once licks up.” (Perez, 1882)
Braula eggs are very small (less than 1mm long) and must be laid on capped honey comb in order to hatch successfully. Tiny hatched larvae will tunnel under the cappings, giving the comb the appearance of having narrow fracture lines beneath the surface. These intersecting tunnel lines are, along with simply observing bee lice on a bee, one of the main ways of detecting the presence of Braula in a colony.
For an observant beekeeper, noticing this unwelcome insect in a colony is a fairly straightforward process. But it may not be so easy for the bees. The bee louse “has adapted to inhabit honeybee colonies without being detected. This study found that Braula has a cuticular hydrocarbon profile that mirrors that of their host
honeybees. This very close match allows them to blend into the colony and so avoid detection by the attending workers.” (Martin and Bayfield, 2014). This helps explain why the bees may not be doing a better job of grooming each other to remove the bee lice.
The presence of Braula coeca has been reported in all continents except for Antarctica. In Australia, where it is called a Braula fly, it is established in Tasmania, but not on the mainland where it is a reportable pest in all states and territories. “As adult Braula flies are wingless and so cannot survive independently of the honeybee colony, they are always in direct contact with the honeybees”, which distribute them by providing free flights and snacks as they go about their daily business with the Braula as passengers. Beekeepers bring this insect to various regions of the world through movement of colonies and the shipment of queens and packaged bees.
The Bee Health App available from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry currently states that management and control measures are not needed for the bee louse. Conveniently, beekeepers are already doing other tasks that help keep this insect under control, “Braula is rarely seen in colonies because of the regular use of miticides for varroa control. Furthermore, most beekeepers practice mechanical control unknowingly when they remove cappings before honey extraction, thus eliminating braula larvae.”
(Coffey, 2007)
Of course, as beekeeping practices evolve over time, the presence of bee lice may also change, as it has in Libya. “The regular usage of miticides by beekeepers, especially Apistan (fluvalinate) to control varroa mites at the end of every season, resulted in the decrease and disappearance of the population of Braula coeca approximately in 1990. At the turn of the century, beekeepers gradually reduced the usage of miticides against varroa mites, and by managing it without chemicals occasionally, Braula coeca
reappeared in 2009”. (Alfallah and Mirwan, 2018).
Aside from beekeeping responsibly, no additional action is needed on the part of Alberta beekeepers in managing bee lice at this time, however, it is always a good idea to be aware of its presence and to be ready to act when and if circumstances change.

Honey Bee Warranties and getting to the bottom of the “Million Hive Bee Boom” with Blake Shook
By Project Apis m. https://www.projectapism.org/pam-blog/a-warranty-for-honey-beesAre there really a million more honey bee colonies in the U.S.?
Project Apis m. Executive Director, Danielle Downey, sat down with the owner of The Bee Supply and Desert Creek Honey, Blake Shook, to discuss the 2022 Census of Agriculture in which a significant increase in colonies in the U.S. was reported.
It will take time to completely understand what is behind the reported increase, but it does seem possible that more beekeepers are being counted than in the past. Some are using bees to take advantage of agricultural tax exemptions, and inflation stemming from the pandemic could have bumped others over the $1000 income threshold to qualify for the Census.
“I feel like we are relatively steady, but we are shifting away from hobby beekeepers into to ag-exempt beekeepers that are getting picked up by the census, and sometimes there could be double counting because people are moving their bees around”
— Blake ShookWhy does this matter? Understanding how many colonies are in the U.S. helps inform what resources are needed to support healthy bees and bee businesses. In this interview, Blake also shares his observations about how newer or small-scale beekeepers explore many different types of beekeeping businesses.
“Years ago the model was if you were going to make a living you became a migratory beekeeper. I don’t see as much of that anymore, but I see so many smallscale beekeepers becoming full-time beekeepers in very unique ways. Beekeeping services, selling honey, selling nucs, teaching classes. There is so much diversity and it’s becoming really competitive!”
— Blake ShookTo help support this community, Blake’s company has created a honey bee warranty. This a unique model that, combined with extensive educational support, is creating a recipe for success and sustainable beekeeping for beginner beekeepers.
Why does this matter? Because beekeeping is hard! New beekeepers get easily burned by the steep learning curve, health challenges, and high costs of beekeeping. This emphasis on education is significant because it will foster greater success within the beekeeping community as a whole. As Blake sees it, all beekeepers are peers on a shared journey.

We are Putting the Spotlight on Alberta Honey – Literally!
The ABC is conducting a photo shoot of Alberta honey to help visually capture the unique and diverse range of pure honey produced in Alberta. These images will be used to build a photo library of honey images to support the Commissions honey marketing and promotion activities.
We are kindly requesting Alberta beekeepers to send in a jar or two of their honey that we can use in the photo shoot to help to visually showcase the diversity of Alberta honey throughout the season.
The photography will only include honey at this stage, and no branding of the honey will be included – just the good stuff from inside the jar. Any additional info on the honey (month or seasonal timing, main floral source etc.) would be helpful to include if available.
Please send all honey jars to:
Attention: Jules Ham Alberta Beekeepers Commission 11434 – 168 Street, #102 Edmonton, AB T8N 4L7.
Please note the honey will not be returned.
The International Market for Canadian Honey Could be Very Sweet
By Nedal Ismail, Professor and Program Coordinator, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced LearningWith honey being the third-most counterfeited food product globally, many international markets are implementing a requirement for full traceability as a condition of importing many products, including honey. Without a traceability system, Canadian honey producers may be prevented from exporting or even having their products used as inputs in food manufacturing destined for export markets –making this an urgent need for producers over the coming years.
A pilot study is currently underway by the researchers at the Longo Faculty of Business at Humber College1 in collaboration with InCube Mobility Solutions2 is looking to pave the way for a proposed traceability system. This study, which involved a local Niagara honey producer, developed and implemented the traceability processes and trained the various levels of the value chain. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)3 and the Office of Research and Innovation at Humber College generously supported the study.
This pilot project, using GS14 traceability standards, examined the feasibility of implementing a traceability system for a honey producer in Ontario, tracking every step in the production, collection, filtering, packaging, and distribution of honey and is traceable via an individualized serial number on each container of honey for retail sale. The traceability system, as tested, did not require an upfront investment – rather, it added a fee to each jar exported.
Critically, the end consumer [purchasers] will be able to see every step in the value chain of the jar of honey they have purchased via a QR code scanned by a smartphone. Each jar’s single-use serial number will ensure that there is no doubt about the authenticity of the product and its origins.
This pilot study had several objectives:
• Can a traceability system be implemented? Knowing that most honey producers are small- to medium -sized operators.

2. InCube Mobility Solutions is a global provider of high-end supply chain management solutions. Headquartered in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), it has offices in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, South Africa, and Canada.
• If a traceability system is implemented, is this honey “exportable” for retail sale?
• Will the export market provide a premium price for “genuine” Canadian honey and ensure the honey produced in Canada will be accepted in international markets?
Initial results of the study are very exciting: the traceability process was accepted by the Dubai government, and in March, an order for a pallet of 500 jars of Niagara honey was made at double the current price – and are waiting for the order to be fulfilled. The importer is confident that if his retail clients are happy with the quality of the honey, they will commit to purchasing 1,000 kg per month [to start].
While a pilot study – which had a very small sample size – is by no means a “proof of concept” for the export of Canadian honey to international markets, it is very positive. It opens the door for the next stage: increasing the number of producers looking to export.
With over 40% of honey production, the international market for Alberta honey could be extremely lucrative and possibly achieve sales prices of double or triple current prices. And, if investment were made into branding, the retail price increase could be even higher. The researchers would like to work with a number of Alberta honey producers to attempt to replicate these results.

Bereavement Notice
Tadeusz Pala
, known as Ted to most, passed away on March 26, 2024.
Ted developed a love for bees and a passion for beekeeping early on in life. Although he pursued other avenues during his years in Poland, beekeeping remained his passion. In 1986 Ted immigrated to Canada with his family following in 1988. They ended up in Fairview, Alberta where Ted worked for Dave Tegart and Tegart Apiaries until 1994. In 1994, Ted along with his wife Jadwiga(Yola) and his son Daniel bought 300 of their own beehives and started their operation in Eaglesham, Alberta. Thus was born, Pala’s Vitamin Honey Farm.
Ted worked hard on self-sustainability, focusing on queen rearing and nuc production to help with winter loss and building his hive counts. In 2000, they moved the operation to the old school in Wanham, Alberta where they had more space to run the business.
Ted and Yola retired in 2010 and moved back to Poland in 2011, where Ted continued to keep bees up until his death.
Ted’s passion for bees, his wisdom about all things bees, his enthusiasm, kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. He was a generous man who shared his knowledge and experience about beekeeping with anyone who asked. Ted trained and helped countless people over the years with the basics of beekeeping. Numerous people both in Canada and Poland reached out after his death to say that it was Ted who got them into beekeeping. Ted was a well known and well respected beekeeper in Poland and received numerous beekeeping awards and recognitions over the years.
Ted leaves his sons Daniel and Artur to carry on his passion and his legacy.
