PRESIDENT’S REPORT I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas and holiday break. We now begin to make plans for what will no doubt be another challenging season. I recently made the trip to Las Vegas for the American Beekeepers Federation meeting, and while it was good to meet some new beekeepers and talk to many familiar faces in the tradeshow, COVID once again put a big damper on an otherwise excellent convention. Many speakers were forced to cancel or send in pre-recorded talks, and many booths sat empty or were backfilled with unrelated suppliers and sales people.
We are in discussions with Dr. Rassol Bahreini to continue some of the work the Commission supported between 2013 – 2018 looking at orphan compounds. Dr. Bahreini and Dr. Olav Rueppel at the University of Alberta have submitted a research proposal to the Commission. Dr. Medhat Nasr is also continuing this work in Saskatchewan. The Commission had an opportunity to meet with Ministers Horner and Orr to present the irradiation project. The presentation was well received. Two industry partners have expressed interest in partnering with beekeepers which will increase the viability of this project. Edmonton International Airport business development group has expressed interest as the site where an irradiation facility would be established once all the financing is in place. There will be a presentation on this project at the upcoming Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Workshop that is taking place February 10 and 11. Another side project we have been working on is looking at recycling of plastics as we cull our frames.
Some of the highlights included a keynote speaker who presented on a major environmental incident where an ethanol plant was being utilized to process all unused treated seed from across North America. The spent product was then being sold to farmers as fertilizer without proper testing on the pesticide residues still found within it. You can find out more at the Project Apis m. blog page https://www.projectapism.org/project-
apis-m-blog.
We hope you can join us at the upcoming IPM Workshop this month that is being hosted as a hybrid meeting by our Tech Transfer Program (TTP) team. The TTP will also be hosting a Queen Breeders Day on Saturday, February 12, following the IPM. CHC will also be hosting their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on February 9, 2022.
Another keynote speaker was Dr. David Tarpy who spoke about the relationship between the queen and the environment she lives in. One of his experiments took good queens and swapped them out into the hives of poor queens and vice versa. The results were that the qood queen did poorly and the “poor” queen did better. It was a good reminder that blaming the queen, or the queen producer is not always the answer. We hope to get Dr. Tarpy at the 2022 Convention.
A reminder that there will be a Special Commission Meeting at the IPM to discuss a possible hive levy increase and how this increase will be utilised and I encourage everyone to make an effort to make it out for this meeting either in person or virtually and voice your opinion.
To that point the board has been working hard at several projects aimed at improving the hive environment. Top of the list is and will continue to be funding research to kill mites.

BIOSECURITY – BOXES AND FRAMES By Dr. Renata Borba, Tech Transfer Program Lead, Alberta Beekeepers Commission
One of the key factors affecting colony loss is the presence of multiple pathogen and parasite loads, as well as the background levels of their infective agents within hive substrates, such as: wax, pollen, honey. Many pathogens can survive in hive substrate for multiple years, so beekeepers must adopt management practices that minimize disease spread. In this article we will list key management practices that will help you prevent a disease outbreak in your operation and keep your queen breeders strong and healthy.
from an apiary and isolate/quarantine all infected colonies in a common apiary, a hospital apiary. Hospital apiaries should be established at least 2-3 km from other apiaries. This practice will not only reduce the spread of the disease to healthy colonies in its original apiary, but also facilitate disease monitoring and treatment since beekeepers will no longer need to drive throughout their operation to inspect and treat infected colonies. • Before reusing or storing equipment, make to clean and disinfect them properly. Equipment should be cleaned from any wax and, if needed, rinsed with warm water. But if you are looking for a deep clean option, equipment can also be sanitized using a 9:1 bleach solution.
‘Purchasing bees and used equipment’ • Buy bees and used equipment only from reputable sources and inspect equipment before purchase. • Check with your provincial authority if you can obtain a sale inspection report to confirm that bees and/or equipment are disease free. • Contaminated equipment and pollen purchased from commercial sources should be irradiated to ensure bacterial spores are rendered non-viable. • If importing from out of province, follow provincial and federal regulations. You must obtain a permit from the Provincial Apiculturist in order to move equipment and/or bees from one province to another. • And don’t forget to register with your local provincial authority. Owning equipment, even without bees, requires registration.
‘Storage’ • Store used bee equipment in a close off area, inaccessible to bees and pests. • Remove all unused be equipment from bee yards ASAP. • If equipment must remain in the open for a short period, close of the top and bottom of boxes with lids or bottom boards. • And store empty honey supers and brood honey in an enclosed cool area with good air flow.
‘Maintenance of beekeeping equipment’ • Replace broken frames or boxes as needed. Always carry extra boxes and frames with you when visiting the apiary in case you need it. • Regularly inspect colonies to identify diseases, pests, and equipment in need of repair. • Scrape off burr comb and dispose of in a sealed garbage. • Spread of disease can also occur by splitting strong infected colonies. When splitting colonies, inspect all frames and only use colonies that are healthy. • Infected colonies are often weak and when food is scarce these colonies are robbed by nearby strong colonies. American and European foulbrood can be easily spread through robbing, as bees robbing weak infected colonies can carry the pathogen back to their healthy colonies. • Beekeepers must monitor for signs of disease and remove all contaminated equipment from colonies. A disease can also be spread within an apiary through drifting of bees. It is a good management practice to remove sick/infected colonies 5

bleach. Smoker surfaces should also sanitized. To sterilize hive tools, scrape any wax, propolis, and honey off using another hive tool and dispose in the garbage. Scorch both ends of the hive tool with a blow torch or place it in a welllit smoker.
‘Disposal’ • Diseased frames can be removed from colonies as a form of disease management, without destroying colonies if infection is low. • Old or infected frames should be disinfected or destroyed properly. º Infected frames can be irradiated and reused, or burnt. º If choosing to burn equipment, contact county for incineration of plastic frames and foundation. • Boxes can be scorched and reused, or burnt
Smokers can be disinfected by scorching the wooden surface of the bellow and wiping the surface with bleach water. BIOSECURITY – HONEY EXTRACTION FACILITY AND STORAGE Honey extraction and wax rendering facilities need to follow strict biosecurity protocols to ensure that the food processed in it is safe for human consumption. This article should not be used as a stand-alone guide of food safety, and proper handling and storage of feed supplement, chemicals, and medications. For a complete manual of good production practices, please visit the Canadian Honey Council website, www.honeycouncil.ca and download a free copy of the Canadian Beekeepers’ Practical Handbook to Bee Biosecurity and Food Safety.
‘Record keeping’ • Keep track of where and when equipment was purchased. • Record age of equipment and replace 20% of your oldest frames each year. BIOSECURITY – TOOLS AND BEE SUIT Several bee pathogens and pests can survive on surfaces and spread via personal protective equipment and beekeeping equipment. Implementing the following biosecurity practices into your operation will help prevent this and keep your bees healthy.
Now let’s go over a few simple tips to maintain a clean facility and the basics of chemical storage.
Before going to the apiary, ensure you have a garbage bin or bag with you, a torch and fuel, and extra hive tools, bee suit, and gloves.
‘Honey Extracting Facility’ Where there is honey there will be bees. Remove unused equipment from in and around the facilities to avoid robbing. Bees will be attracted to the honey house and may be exposed to pathogens present in other bees or on equipment. Regularly cleaning of extraction building and honey spills will help you keeping the number of bees, and wasps, in the honey extraction facility low. Personal hygiene and the facility hygiene are very important in honey processing areas. All staff should follow basic personal hygiene practices and the layout of the facility should have a distinct separation from the processing area to areas that may introduce contaminants, such as washrooms, loading area and chemical storage. Ensure the facility has adequate supply of potable water for personal and facility cleaning purposes.
‘Biosecurity in between colonies’ If a disease is present in a colony, switch gloves and sterilize hive tools before moving on to the next colony. And if the contaminated equipment was in contact if you bee suit, replace your bee suit as well. American and European Foulbrood are highly contagious brood diseases and can easily spread throughout a yard via hive tools, gloves and bee suit. ‘In between yards’ Even if disease symptoms are not seen in a yard, it is a good idea to get in the habit of following biosecurity protocols. Gloves should be switched, and hive tools sterilized before going to the next yard.
If multiple operations are using the extraction facilities, disinfect equipment between uses to prevent the spread of pathogens. All equipment should be accessible for cleaning, sanitizing, maintenance and inspection. Stainless steel or plastic equipment must be food grade and lead free. All equipment
If American or European Foulbrood is present, switch for a clean bee suit as well. Place dirty suits in a plastic bag and wash with 6

must be intact and not include signs of degradation that could negatively impact the food safety of honey products.
When incorrect dose of treatments are applied to the colony, pathogen resistance may occur. Additionally, some treatments may become toxic to bees if not stored properly.
Avoid extracting honey from brood chambers as those have a higher chance of containing bee diseases.
‘Storage’
‘Record keeping’
Storage areas should be monitored regularly to ensure inputs are stored correctly and its integrity. Frequent inspection, followed by appropriate pest control, will also reduce pest build-up and decrease risk of contamination. Different item categories, such as raw honey, feed supplements, medication and packaging materials, should be stored separately to reduce contamination of honey products.
• Keep an inventory of treatments and use first in first out system. • Record the treatment type and application date for each hive/yard to ensure treatment types are rotated and removed at the correct time. • And, Record the lot number and supplier for treatment products.
All inputs should be stored under correct conditions to prevent contaminations. Chemicals and medications should be stored according to manufacture label directions to prevent degradation, which may result in reduced efficacy.
The Tech Transfer Program is funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
CELEBRATE CANADA’S AGRICULTURE DAY
Pests will also be attracted to the honey house. Buildings need to be design and maintained to prevent the entry of pests, and a pest management and control should be in place.
Dispose of used or expired chemicals and medications according to package directions. Do not leave treatments (used or unused) in bee yard and ensure treatments are removed at the proper time. Leaving treatments in for too short or too long may result in resistance development.

Spending More Time Indoors Is What’s In Store For U.S. Honey Bee Colonies
By Jeri Parrent, Bee Informed Partnership (BIP), https://beeinformed.org/2022/01/11/spending-more-time-indoors-iswhats-in-store-for-u-s-honey-bee-colonies/ In the dim, red glow of the immense warehouse’s lights, tall stacks of wooden boxes are lined up in seemingly endless rows, where they will stand for the next couple of months until spring returns to California. But this is not just a warehouse full of surplus beekeeping equipment, it is an indoor storage facility – and the boxes aren’t empty, but filled with live, honey bee colonies, waiting out the winter weather in this chilly, climate-controlled facility. Storing bees indoors over the winter months is not new in North America; for many years, some beekeepers in Canada and the northern US have kept colonies inside over the winter to reduce their prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions in a wide variety of structures, from cellars, to converted potato and onion sheds, to buildings designed and built specifically for honey bee storage, equipped with the latest climate control and air exchange systems to maintain optimal temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentrations and air exchange conditions. Over the last several years, indoor storage has been rapidly gaining greater popularity among US commercial beekeepers and an increasing number of colonies are spending time indoors. This recent increase in interest to temporarily house honey bees indoors is born not only out of the desire to reduce winter losses by providing protection from winter weather, but also because of additional benefits to honey bee health and the bottom line that the timely use of indoor storage may offer some commercial beekeeping operations. To avoid harsh winter conditions, US commercial beekeepers often move colonies to holding yards in California or other states where the weather is much milder. However, colonies wintering in warmer environments will continue to remain active, rearing brood, and consuming greater resources than they would at cooler temperatures. This results in costs incurred for the labor, travel and supplies needed to feed and manage these colonies during this period that would otherwise be unnecessary when wintering colonies indoors.

storage facilities that are kept sufficiently cool and dark so that the bees remain within their hives and do not fly.
Holding yards can also have extremely high colony densities, with hundreds of colonies (or more), often from multiple beekeeping operations, kept in close contact until they can be moved into almond orchards. This can result in enhanced bee drift, which increases the transmission risk of harmful pests and diseases among neighboring colonies, compared to indoor
It is possible to successfully overwinter strong, healthy colonies outside in cold climates, provided they have been adequately insulated and provisioned, therefore avoiding the problems associated with moving colonies to warmer temperatures. But because they are subjected to external environmental

conditions, bees will still break cluster and fly on nice days if it is warm enough. This can reduce colony size over time since a portion of the bees who leave the colonies will not return and will not be replaced until the queen begins laying again the following spring. This leaves fewer bees inside the hive to help regulate internal colony conditions. Since bees will also consume greater resources when the weather warms, periodic temperature spikes can increase the risk of starvation for colonies wintered outdoors if colonies do not have sufficient reserves. Colonies kept in the cool, dark environment of indoor storage facilities will stop producing brood until returned to warmer, brighter conditions. This creates the opportunity for beekeepers to perform any management actions that are best accomplished under broodless conditions just as colonies are brought out of storage. This includes treating for Varroa, the ectoparasitic mite that feeds on developing and adult bees and transmits several harmful honey bee viruses. Varroa can only reproduce inside the capped cells containing developing honey bee brood. Therefore, when colonies stored indoors experience a broodless period, or “brood break”, Varroa are also no longer able to reproduce for the duration of time that the colonies remain broodless.
Brood breaks do not affect the adult Varroa population that already exists within the colonies, but the lack of capped brood cells, where as many as 80% of a colony’s Varroa population regularly resides, creates conditions that make Varroa chemical control treatments much more effective than when applied while brood is present. And because the colonies are all in a single location, Varroa treatment application, and any other management actions taken can be accomplished quickly and efficiently. Although this approach may not be fitting for all operations, some beekeepers are now using indoor storage facilities to induce periodic brood breaks outside of wintertime as part of a comprehensive Varroa management plan. While there are benefits to keeping colonies in cold storage, there are also a number of costs that may make it impractical for some beekeeping operations to use indoor facilities. This includes the initial cost to build a new structure or retrofit an existing building to make it appropriate for bee storage, as well as the cost of the land on which it is built, and the energy required to run it. Though it may not be possible for a beekeeper to build their own facility, some larger operations will rent excess storage space to other beekeepers, making it a realistic management option for smaller-scale beekeeping operations.

Successfully storing colonies indoors for weeks to months at a time also requires a significant amount of planning throughout the rest of the year to ensure that they have been adequately prepared. Unlike colonies kept outdoors, bees that go into storage are intended to remain undisturbed for the duration of their stay. This means that all management actions, such as feeding, culling or combining weak colonies and treating for Varroa and other diseases must be completed before going into storage, so that beekeepers are only paying to store strong, healthy, disease-free colonies. As beekeepers like to say, “indoor storage is a hotel not a hospital” – the condition of the colonies going into storage will dictate their condition when they emerge. Given the potential benefits that indoor storage may offer to some commercial beekeeping operations, it is not surprising that there has been a recent rise in beekeeper interest in using them. However, additional research is needed to investigate the benefits and disadvantages of indoor storage for colony health and survival rates and to explore ways in which the benefits of indoor storage may be extended beyond its current benefits. Dr. Brandon Hopkins, Assistant Research Professor and Apiary Manager at Washington State University and Dr. Kelly Kulhanek, Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Hopkins Lab, have been a critical part of the research community effort to further study the application for indoor storage in commercial beekeeping operations, and have been integral in developing an indoor storage guide specific for US commercial beekeepers, which is now available at no cost
on the Project Apis m. website (https://www.projectapism. org/indoor-storage-of-honey-bees.html). The Bee Informed Partnership’s Technical Transfer Team has also been working with the Hopkins lab, providing field support for their ongoing research with indoor storage, and will continue to do so in the upcoming field seasons. Building cold storage facilities in California would be welcomed by beekeepers and almond growers for the benefits that would come with keeping bees in close proximity to almond orchards in the lead up to pollination. Unfortunately, California’s extremely high property and energy costs, combined with the higher energy demands required to keep indoor storage facilities cool when located in warmer climates such as that found in the California Central Valley’s almond growing region, currently make it much more financially attractive to build and maintain facilities outside the state. The greater number of warm, late autumn days and freezethaw cycles during the winter months that colonies wintered in the northern US are now experiencing makes the prospect of storing bees in facilities with controlled, consistent climate conditions more appealing than having to deal with the challenges created by increasingly unpredictable outdoor winter conditions. And whether bees are wintering in Idaho storage sheds or catching a late-spring brood break in a facility further south, it is clear spending more time indoors is what’s in store for many US honey bee colonies.
