Special thanks to BeeMaid who supplied the BEE AWARE OF WHAT YOU'RE BUYING graphics that accompany the campaign. The concern, however, is much broader than this. The CFIA currently supports the integrity of Canadian honey industry by testing samples of imported honey for adulteration. Using the most advanced technology and traditional C-4 testing, Canada has a very good reputation for preventing the importation of adulterated honey despite the fact that honey is recognized as one of the most fraudulently produced food products. However, Canada must remain vigilant with the emergence of the new aforementioned products, with this new gap in the market now threatening the integrity of the Canadian honey industry. The

fter a promising start to the growing season across Alberta, Mother Nature has decided to put agriculture to the test across the province.

The impacts of well below average precipitation and high temperatures can be seen across the province. While crop insurance will be the primary risk management tool for grain and oilseed farmers, livestock producers are facing immediate feed and water shortages that are impacting animal health. The Alberta Government has been actively working with the Federal Government to provide emergency relief through the AgriRecovery program to Alberta producers/ranchers affected by the drought. In a statement on July 15, Alberta Minister of Agriculture, Devin Dreeshen said the province has “received verbal commitment from Ottawa that a joint AgriRecovery program will be initiated to support Prairie producers affected by drought conditions prior to (a federal) election.” (Source:

Guide to Varroa Mite Controls for Commercial Beekeeping Operations

GUIDE TO VARROA MITE CONTROLS FOR COMMERCIAL BEEKEEPING OPERATIONS

By The Honey Bee Health Coalition (HBHC) The Honey Bee Health Coalition has published a guide detailing how commercial beekeepers are finding success treating Varroa without relying exclusively on off-label chemical treatments. The guide is pivotal to the industry as Varroa mites are already showing signs of widespread resistance to off-label varroacides.

The Honey Bee Health Coalition offers this Guide free of charge, and permits others to duplicate and distribute it. You may not use the material for commercial purposes. If you distribute the Guide, please give appropriate credit to the Coalition as its author. We encourage readers to distribute it to beekeepers and anyone else who can benefit from it.

Guide to Varroa Mite Controls for Commercial Beekeeping Operations lays out a vision that addresses the risks of resistance created by off-label use. Widespread resistance to products like amitraz poses a serious threat to the long-term financial health of every commercial beekeeping business. Continuous use of off-label amitraz, with increasing dosages (as it becomes less effective), is likely to cause amitraz to lose its effectiveness, just as other products like coumaphos and tau-fluvalinate have become largely ineffective for controlling Varroa mites.

HOW HIATT MANAGES VARROA In recent years, Chris has used a combination of methods to manage Varroa: • Monitoring • Brood breaks • A variety of chemical treatments This combination has generally helped the operation meet its goal going into almond pollination of no higher than 35% colony loss, which is better than the national average. Chris noted that a 15% annual loss was the norm 15 years ago, and it was 10% before that. MONITORING

This guide aims to help commercial beekeepers evaluate a variety of Varroa control methods that can be integrated into a management plan to protect their bees and their business. It highlights the experiences of beekeepers who are having success as they explore alternative strategies to limit their reliance on off-label amitraz and avoid using unregistered products.

Chris Hiatt, Hiatt Honey Company, Madera, California Hiatt Honey Company was started 52 years ago in Washington by Chris Hiatt’s father, a schoolteacher, who had spent a couple summers working for an Oregon beekeeper. Chris said that, after running hives in Alberta, Canada, his dad decided to summer bees in North Dakota in the 1970s. With five brothers involved, the company is now based in Madera, California, in the Central Valley, as well as in Ephrata, Washington, and Bowman, North Dakota. Business revenue comes primarily from honey production, and the portion derived from pollination services has grown over the years to about 40% of revenue. The company’s bees pollinate almonds, blueberries, plums, cherries, and kiwis in the Central Valley as well as apples in Washington. The operation’s 20,000 colonies spend all summer in North Dakota, and then most overwinter outdoors in California while a few truckloads winter indoors in Idaho. Chris is vice president of the American Honey Producers Association and has served on the steering committee of the Honey Bee Health Coalition.

In addition to documenting six case studies examining various approaches to Varroa treatment, the guide also reviews the causes and impacts of Varroa mite resistance to varroacides. It also highlights control methods that can be used in an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy or a highly specific, knowledge-driven approach, referred to as precision apiculture. The company monitors for mites in the spring and fall, and sampling is done in select yards on 10 to 15 hives per yard. Chris said he expects to have high mite loads after pulling honey, and monitoring is a focus after that. “You have to follow up and monitor, especially in the fall and the spring when you do mite treatments. You have to go back and check and see if it worked to reduce mites below threshold,” he said. “If you let the mites get too high, the viruses are already in there, and they’re ticking time bombs.” ROTATING WITH THYMOL Chris’s operation uses the thymol product Apiguard® the most in its chemical treatment rotation. The business applies Apiguard® in the spring, between almonds and oranges, and again in May before the colonies go to North Dakota. In July, the company uses oxalic acid in between the first and second honey pull. Then in late August and early September, Chris said he uses amitraz in the form of Apivar® strips. Once the colonies are back in California, the business applies Apiguard® again in October and November. “After we had done an Apivar® treatment, coming in with an Apiguard® after that, it really cleaned them up,” he said. The hives that indoor winter in Idaho also receive an oxalic treatment. In total, it adds up to five or six treatments per year.

Hive-side FAQ: Nosemosis By Emily Olson, Apiculture Technician, ABC Tech Transfer Program

W

ith arrival of spring, honey bees can safely emerge from their insulated hives to meet the warming sun. Colonies are vulnerable and need plenty of resources to recoup the losses incurred over the winter months. Spring is an important time and high pathogen levels can hinder the progress of the colony. Specifically, Nosema disease is one to consider during this season. Nosema levels are typically highest during the spring and controlling this pathogen is critical to ensuring your colony thrives. WHAT IS NOSEMA? Nosemosis or Nosema disease is caused by a single celled fungi belonging to the phylum Microsporidia. Nosema reproduce by forming spores which can persist in the environment for many years. There are 2 species of Nosema that infect honey bees: Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae. Recently, these 2 species were reclassified to the genus Varimorpha but are still commonly referred to as Nosema. Originally, Nosema apis was a pest of the European honey bee (EHB) and Nosema ceranae, the Asian honey bee (AHB). However, N. ceranae crossed over to the EHB a few years ago and has become the dominant Nosema species found in our bees. Both species can be found within a single bee but it has been documented that N. ceranae is more detrimental to colonies. HOW DOES A COLONY BECOME INFECTED WITH NOSEMA? Queens, workers, and drones can become infected with Nosema spores by consuming contaminated food and water, during trophallaxis from an infected to a healthy bee, and by cleaning or robbing contaminated hives. After ingesting a Nosema spore, the fungus will germinate and multiply within the midgut cell, producing more spores and eventually rupturing the cell wall. The spores are released into the midgut and either infect other cells or are excreted. The fecal matter can then contaminate hive substrates (e.g., wax/comb) and infect other bees. HOW DOES NOSEMA AFFECT HONEY BEES? Nosema infection can cause long lasting digestion issues and lead to a reduced adult bee lifespan. Studies have shown that high number of Nosema spores are associated with malformation of brood-food glands and elevated levels of juvenile hormone. As a result, infected bees often don’t produce brood food and initiate foraging activities prematurely. Younger

• Count the spores on 5 squares of the hemocytometer.

bees switch to foraging earlier in life and are therefore less efficient at gathering resources, and less successful at returning to the colony from foraging trips. This results in a shortage of food in the colony, which affects brood rearing and the overall productivity of the hive. Infected colonies are also more susceptible to secondary infections, such as chalkbrood, due to lower brood nest temperatures (a result from the reduced population size) and the damaged midgut cells.

• Calculate the number of spores per bee by multiplying the number of spores counted by 50,000. If there are 1 million spores per bee or more, treatment is recommended. HOW IS NOSEMA CONTROLLED? Once a Nosema infection above the recommended threshold of 1 million spores per bee is identified, colonies can be treated with Fumagillin-B. Fumagillin is an anti-fungal compound and is the only registered chemical treatment for honey bee colonies with Nosema in Canada. It is important to follow the label instructions to ensure the treatment is safe and effective.

Drones and queens are also susceptible to Nosema disease. Infected drones may have a decreased body mass and sperm viability, reducing the success of mating. Queens with high Nosema spore loads are poor egg layers and there is evidence that oocytes (immature eggs) degrade as a result. Additionally, infected queens are more likely to be superseded, contributing to the poor productivity of the colony.

Fumagillin suppresses the actively growing stages of Nosema spp. but it has no effect on spores, which can remain dormant on equipment for many years. Fumigation with acetic acid has proven to be effective at killing spores and disinfecting contaminated equipment (for more details, see https:// honeybee.uoguelph.ca/resources-for-beekeepers/aceticacid-fumigation/). Frames can also be sent for irradiation, but this can be time consuming and costly as the closest facility is in Port Coquitlam, BC.

HOW IS NOSEMA DETECTED? Unfortunately, visual detection is unreliable in diagnosing Nosema disease, as symptoms will often look similar to problems caused by other pathogens or poor environmental conditions. However, closely monitoring your colony is an important step in detecting when something is wrong and should be followed with other diagnoses tools. Greasy looking bees with swollen abdomens and wings held at odd angles can be a sign of Nosema apis infection. If the colony is weak, unproductive, and a reduced population size is noticed, Nosema may be the cause. Dysentery (fecal matter on the outside of the colony) is often associated with Nosema apis but not necessarily the cause. High Nosema infections occur in the spring which coincides with bees leaving the hive after the long winter. Bees do not defecate inside the hive so once the warm spring weather arrives they are free to answer nature’s call.

Prevention is always preferable and easier than treating a disease once it takes hold. Ensuring colonies are strong and well fed in the fall will help stave off diseases throughout the winter. Eliminating co-stressors such as other diseases or lack of food/water, reducing weak colonies to a nuc or single box, placing in a warm sunny location, and limiting the amount you go into the hive in the winter/spring will help prevent Nosema disease. The Tech Transfer Program is funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

A reliable and accurate method to diagnose Nosema disease is by microscopy. Many beekeepers do this on their own, but samples can also be sent to a lab for testing. • Collect a sample of forager bees from a honey frame (30-60 bees). • Separate the abdomens, crushed them thoroughly and combine with water (1 mL water per 1 bee abdomen). • Place a drop of the prepared sample onto a hemocytometer and analyze it under a microscope. 7

Detecting Wax Moth Larvae In Frames Of Sealed Brood By Rob Snyder, Bee Informed Partnership https://beeinformed.org/2021/07/02/detecting-wax-moth-larvae-in-frames-of-sealed-brood/

Another visual identifier of developing wax moths in colonies is when the capping is chewed down, appearing like the bee was trying to chew out of the cell (Image 2). This is actually caused by adult bees removing the wax layer on top of the capping containing the cocoon, as the bees have most likely detected the dead pupa below under the capping and are working on removing it. You often find these signs in older dark comb. (See images 1-4).

As a honeybee health field specialist, when I am assessing a colony’s health I look for irregularities in the sealed or open brood (Image 1 & 2). These irregularities may indicate the presence of diseases or pests. One common pest that can cause brood irregularities is the wax moth. Wax moth larvae develop underneath the honey bee colony’s brood cappings. The wax moth larvae often bind a honey bee pupa’s feet to the midline of the of frame, resulting in pupae that are not able to molt properly and therefore die in the capped cell before emergence. When identifying and locating wax moth larvae in a brood frame, the first thing I look for are honey bee pupae that have been uncapped in a straight line. Usually, those pupae have developed heads and are in the purple eyed stage (Image 1). This symptom is coined bald brood. The pupa is often uncapped in a straight line with the next few cells being noticeably light as if the bees were slowly chewing the cappings (see Image 2). In contrast, I have also seen these lines of capped brood with the capping becoming dark brown.

Image 2: Capped brood with irregularities. Notice the light colored, thin cappings in the center of the image; this is usually a sign of damage caused by wax moth larval tunneling. This image was taken before I dug out the wax moth larva.Photo Credit: Robert Snyder, CA Field Specialist

Image 3: After I dug the wax moth larvae out, notice how the uncapped brood is not in a line. Photo Credit: Robert Snyder, CA Field Specialist

We see these same chewing behaviors on the 2nd day of hygienic testing where they often puncture the capping as opposed to just making it thinner. I would say having a hygienic queen is an advantage for combating wax moth and other diseases by removing them quickly. You can read more about bald brood and see additional images in one of my past blogs HERE.

Below is a video of me digging out a wax moth larvae. You will notice in the video that I have modified my hive tool so it is easier to use to uncap brood and dig out pollen, brood or wax moth larvae. For more information on how I modified my hive tool read MY BLOG HERE.

Once you’ve located the wax moth larva, the final step is digging it out with the sharp end of the hive tool. If you do a good job, you can get the larva out on the first try, but it does take some practice (shown in Image 3 & 4). I can usually dig out the wax moth larva from beneath the cappings on my first try, but sometimes it takes some more digging to find it.

You may see more damage from the moths during the spring. If you only find one wax moth in a frame, do not be alarmed: just remove the larva and consider yourself lucky that it isn’t worse. This was most likely one wax moth larva that survived underneath the colony’s cappings. If you have a large area of silk built across the surface of the frames from thriving moth larvae, make sure you remove the older wax moth cocoons and any netting or tunneling removed from frames. Healthy strong colonies and even smaller colonies can usually keep the wax moth at bay. Wax moths can be a problem for small colonies in the winter who cannot cover all of the comb. Wax moths usually prefer dead out equipment, so to prevent infestations in unused comb it is best to either store comb with fumigants, leave a light on 24 hours a day with comb exposed to the light and/or keep comb in a cold room or freezer.

Can the Ag Sector Achieve Zero Plastic Waste on the Farm? July, 2020

and more, they look to the manufacturers of these products and packaging to offer solutions to the mounting volume of plastics used to deliver crop input products or to store and preserve harvested crop and livestock fodder.

Modern farming utilizes technologies and innovative products that can help farmers operate efficiently with a goal of higher productivity yields in both crops and livestock. Some of these tools are well known in today’s farming operations and include items made of plastic, such as grain bags and baler twine, as well as plastic containers – jugs, drums and totes – that are used to deliver products such as pesticides and fertilizers. While these are convenient and sometimes essential tools around farms, they can be difficult to manage when they are empty. However, innovative ideas from industry and farmers can lead to better outcomes for managing these materials.

Attitudes about managing these used materials are shifting not only on the farm, but within ag industry circles, as well. Many manufacturers of ag products using plastics fund recycling programs available to farmers through Cleanfarms programs to advance the circular economy for plastics. The circular economy considers all aspects of the product design to minimize unnecessary products, and design materials that can be reused or recycled, keeping them in the economy and out of the environment. The Government of Alberta has already committed to advancing a circular economy for all plastics in the province.

Waste analysis studies in the province estimate that Alberta farmers generate just over 14,000 tonnes of various types of ag plastic annually, which is about the same as Saskatchewan, and includes containers, grain bags, plastic baler twine, bale wrap, silage bags and bunker covers.

Ultimately, the goal is to achieve zero plastic waste in the agricultural sector meaning that for farmers, these materials can be used efficiently, never becoming waste, which contributes to positive onfarm stewardship.

Many farmers have shared their preference for options that avoid ‘use and discard’ practices, but admit they are challenged to find alternatives. More

It’s Time! TIME TO STEP UP YOUR PLANS IN MANAGING VARROA MITES – WITH THYMOVAR® AND THE NEW VARROX® EDDY. Varroa mite populations are at an all-time high, rapidly expanding during the past two years. And their impact can be devastating.

THYMOVAR

VARROX EDDY

THYMOVAR contains thymol, which is derived from thyme oil and is an effective insecticidal mode of action to manage varroa mites.

With the VARROX EDDY, beekeepers now have a portable Li-Ion battery-powered oxalic acid evaporator.

Once released in the hive, thymol vapour concentrations increase and are toxic to varroa mites without harming bees. THYMOVAR is safe on queens.

No more wires or car batteries. The VARROX EDDY is light-weight and push-button simple to use, with full electronic control for temperature and time.

Easy to apply and environmentally safe, THYMOVAR provides excellent management of varroa mites while protecting against re-infestation. It’s an important part of an Integrated Pest Management program that rotates modes of action, reducing the development of resistance in varroa mite populations.

1 Prepare the pan with oxalic acid dihydrate, 2 Inset the pan and place the VARROX EDDY through the flight opening and 3 Apply with one press of the button. When the light blinks, remove the unit.

The best time of year for THYMOVAR is late summer, after the last honey harvest of the year, with a first three- to four-week treatment followed by a second treatment after feeding in the fall for another three to four weeks.

THYMOVAR and the VARROX EDDY provide beekeepers with safe and effective means for managing varroa mites, from late summer through to early winter.

1 Unpack and prepare the strips, 2 Place them directly over the brood on the frames,

THYMOVAR contains 15g of thymol per wafer and is listed as an appropriate organic treatment.

3 Remove the strips after three to four weeks. Then repeat those steps for the second treatment.

Always apply according to label directions.
