Canadian Crafts Federation Reports
Maegen Black from the Canadian Crafts Federation presented the Keith Kelly Award to long-time craft organizer Robert Jekyll. This happened November 1st in Ottawa before a large audience of prominent arts leaders and artists at the 65th anniversary gala for the Canadian Conference of the Arts. Robert was co-nominated by the Alberta Craft Council, Ontario Crafts Council and Canadian Crafts Federation.
After the collapse of the Canadian Craft Council in the 1990s, Robert Jekyll became the keeper of the records, the chief communicator, and eventually the inspiration for the formation of the Canadian Crafts Federation. The Keith Kelly Award for Cultural Leadership is “presented to a Canadian who has made a significant contribution to the arts through advocacy work or the development of cultural policy, or who has otherwise demonstrated leadership in the field”.

The Recipients – 2010 Alberta Craft Awards
January 8 – February 19, 2011, Opening Reception: Saturday, January 15, 2011, 2-4 pm
AWARD OF HONOUR
Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners, Mindy and Sam. And to the staff and Board of the Alberta Craft Council, for the dedicated work and advocacy you do for Alberta Craft and the Community (with a capital ‘C’). I speak for many when I say thank you.
Katrina ChaytorKatrina Chaytor, Calgary
Katrina is a nationally and internationally known ceramic artist and educator based in Calgary, Alberta, where she has been a member of the ceramics faculty at the Alberta College of Art + Design since 2001. Born and raised on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland, she received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. I often reflect on (and am reminded by my family on occasion) that I am so fortunate to do what I love, as a teacher and maker. The students, alumni and the faculty at ACAD have made this life and career choice so much richer, as have the community of friends, teachers and colleagues I have had the privilege to meet over these many years. I did not and could not do this work alone.
The opportunities given, the continued support, the experiences shared, the collaborations realized and the constancy of community have sustained my good ‘fortune’ and practice. Days in the studio are ones of solitary work, with the CBC network my only company.
But it is the network of people who have accompanied me through the possibilities and challenges, the people that I have come to know and work with, that have led to this ACC Award of Honour. This acknowledgement is truly an honour and I am thankful to you all.
In recognition of the contributions, volunteerism and stellar practices of the group of people nominated in this category – Shona, Stephen and Natali – it was an honor to be nominated with you.
To my nominator and colleague Greg Payce, thank you for the nomination and expression of encouragement and support. I am eternally grateful…
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
FAMILY MEMORIAL AWARD
AWARD OF ACHIEVEMENT
Sam Uhlick, Ardrossan
Sam Uhlick, born in Edmonton, studied at the Banff Center, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and apprenticed with world renowned potter Michael Cardrew at Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall England. Sam has been a functional potter for over 35 years and creates his popular line of functional pottery alongside his wife and fellow potter Antonia Huysman in their home and studio.
Mindy Andrews, Calgary
Nature has always played an important role in Mindy Andrews’ life and work. Since graduating from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2002, she has developed a line of porcelain work that incorporates carved pattern or brush work designs based on naturally occurring motifs such as trees, leaves, and the soft curves of unfurling ferns. In 2009, Mindy was a presenter at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea. At the same time she had her work in a 4-person show at the Tong-In Gallery in Seoul. Her work has been featured in publications such as Ceramics Monthly and in 500 Cups by Lark Books. Mindy recently had her work selected for the Clay 2010 exhibition and acquisition by the AFA. I would like to thank the Alberta Craft Council for their ongoing support, Suzette Knudsen for nominating me, everyone who sent letters supporting my nomination and also George Fenwick, who has always supported me in my artistic endeavours!
Mindy Andrews
I would like to thank the family of Linda Stanier for creating this award and the Alberta Craft Council for encouraging me to accept the nomination and of course I would like to thank the jury. I would especially like to thank Dianne Sullivan for her lovely and generous letter of nomination. A letter like that from such a respected artist is a rare treat. I fell in love with pottery 40 years ago and it became my life. I still love pottery after all these years. I value the unconscious essence of simple pots that are made to be used. One of my teachers, Michael Cardew said that “the training of a potter is limited only by the span of his life”. My training for the past 40 years could only have taken place with the support of our friends and customers. The people who love and use my work give it meaning. I have been especially lucky to have the support of my family and of my wife and partner, Antonia Huysman who has been my comfort and help for 30 years. I love you Antonia.
It is a great honour to be given this award and to accept it in the company of my friends and peers. Thank you very much.

The Culinary Collection
An exhibition by silversmith Karen Cantine
February 26 – April 2, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 26, 2011, 2-4pm
Karen Cantine is an internationally recognized metal artist. She was born in Massachusetts and studied at the University of Iowa before moving to Alberta in 1965. Her work has been collected by individuals across the continent, and by major institutions including the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the University of Iowa and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. In 2005, Karen and her husband David, a painter, were inducted into the Edmonton Cultural Hall of Fame. In 2007, she was commissioned by the City of Edmonton to create a vessel brooch as a gift for Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, then Governor General of Canada. Karen’s finely crafted and designed work includes gold and silver jewellery as well as religious and other function objects, such as the chalice used by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Edmonton in 1984.
The collaboration with Culinary Team Alberta started in 1995, when the designers of the team’s table display for the 1996 Culinary Olympics in Berlin approached the Alberta Craft Council looking for food service related items made in Alberta to include in the display. The Culinary Olympics, now held in Erfurt, Germany, take place every four years. Teams from all over the world are judged in two specific events. In the Restaurant of Nations hot competition, worth 2/3 of the overall points, a team has six hours to prepare a three course meal for 130 people under the watchful eye of a judge. In the
cold display table competition, worth 1/3 overall points, judging is based on harmony of competition, appetizing and elegant presentation, correct basic culinary preparation using modern technique, the use of indigenous products and exemplary plating.
In 1995, objects by glass artist Martha Henry, clay artist Don Wells and silversmith Karen Cantine were chosen. When team manager Simon Smotkowicz (Executive Chef at the Shaw Conference Centre) saw the pieces, he asked if the artists could work with the chefs to create specific items for specific foods. The team won gold, and the collaboration was so successful that it started a trend; instead of using custom yet mass-produced dishware, many teams now seek out objects and assistance from artisans in their region.
Karen has been helping Team Alberta design their table display since 2004, and Team Canada in 2006 and 2010. The requirements vary with each competition, and often new serving pieces are needed to complement the theme of the food and the table.
For Karen, working with the team has been a wonderful opportunity to make larger and in some cases rather unusual serving pieces. “You can eat out of a cooking pot if you have to, but eating is a ritual and using beautiful objects heightens that ritual.”

Material Culture, Craft & Community: Negotiating Objects Across Time & Place May 20 – 21, 2011
Registration will open in January 2011
http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/materialculture/registration.cfm
This interdisciplinary conference will explore the varied expressions of craft – social, cultural and material – in past and present societies. Craft has a rich history and vibrant present-day practice, sustaining communities while negotiating cultures. Craft-made goods were and continue to be created for domestic or institutional use, for local or international markets; they express gender roles and cultural aspirations, sustaining economies. At the same time, craft practice defined and continues to define communities and groups, in the midst of global trade networks. Moreover, the flow of ideas, goods and peoples animate the making, circulation and meanings of craft goods. These issues will be addressed over the course of the conference. Keynote speaker will be Laurel Thatcher Ulrich from Harvard University.
