About me:

My name is Albert Canals. I live in Barcelona. I’m a fourth grade design student at Elisava University. I am focused on material design in order to develop product design projects. I am a handyman and also a tech guy. I like creating my own prototypes because I am great at 3D printing and modeling. Another of my passion is art direction and photography. As a designer I want to grow my knowledge and discover other branches like biology and architecture. Everything related with nature is really interesting for me. I constantly question myself, how we as human can learn and apply the wisdom of nature to create a better future. My work methodology is based on the experiment putting the conceptualization, ideation and development of the material the first step in the design process. My goal is to create a coherent product. It also allows you to explore all the creative options of the material. Throughout this years at Elisava I observed a general lack of understanding of a material designer’s role and how their work affects all industries at every stage of the design process. I always try to be a responsible designer for a better future.

Forniture design A product for the capsule project for Casa Ricarda, designing, prototyping and presenting an object for the interior or exterior of the outstanding architectural construction of the 20th century in Catalonia. It is not a matter of making an object that is appropriate at the time but it is about making a product that is inspired and thought to be from the Ricarda house. After the profound analysis of different current car bars, we focus our attention on the use given to this particular product. There are few occasions in which this object offers a useful functionality and real in terms of mobility, since in many cases it ends up being a static object adopting the same basic function that any shelf or surface, the one to put bottles and glasses bumps. In order to capture this reflection in our project we designed CarroBar having in mind certain ideas: mobility, exclusive use for wine and moving away from the borders of the classic concept of car bar.

Material experimentation Candy’ is a l project based on exploring a single material thought experimentation. We focus on using sugar as raw material to create caramel and develop a product based on the original recipe used to make candy. The reason why sugar could be used to create a product or object is because is easy to dissolve in water. In this way, the use of the container would not generate waste after being used. Another reason why we choose caramel as material is because we consume massive amount sugar that is unhealthy for our body. Why don’t we give a new meaning to this material though product design in order to change it connotations.

The design process started learning the making process of candy. Our knowledge about candy making was close to zero, we only knew that is a sugar based product. Then we started looking up for information on books and youtube in order to create our first candy. In the first experiment we discover that just mixing sugar and water is not enough to create a candy that can be manipulated. This way you only get two type of candy, or liquid candy or extra hard and brownish candy. In order to get a candy that is transparent and soft we discovered after our first fail that glucose is part of the equation. We also experiment with the finishing of the material, the caramel is a sticky material on contact, heat and above all does not resist humidity. After several failed attempts, we look for the shape so that the piece does not deform. Finally, we try a process where the hot caramel is allowed to harden in the saucepan while stirring, until reaching the point of not being able to continue because of the crystallization. At this point, heat is re-heated to obtain a double crystallization of the caramel. In this process, the caramel ceases to be translucent and becomes opaque. By the second crystallization the properties that we all know of the caramel change completely. The result material has an opaque finish, with a pastel color and white areas, plus a very smooth finish without being sticky.

Candy is a water-based material so in contact with water it dissolves and is possible to recreate this process to generate different shapes reusing generating a circular system without pollution. It can be used as a material to create packaging or products with single use but also sculptures and art. It communicates a new way of relation with the products that he buy. Finally it enables sugar to be consumed in a different way without polluting our planet and body.
