COUNTY FAIR TO FEATURE MUSICAL VARIETY By Sarah Stultz

sarah.stultz@albertleatribune.com

Freeborn County Fair goers will have a variety of music to choose from for this year’s Grandstand entertainment. Kicking off the fair July 31 will be country musician Easton Corbin. With two No. 1 singles, multiple awards and nominations, plus performances on some of the biggest stages in the world, Corbin is lauded for his traditional country sound, authentic lyrics and mastery of understatement. His self-titled debut album released in 2010 and spawned back-to-back hits “A Little More Country Than That” and “Roll With It.” He was the first male country artist in 17 years to have his first two consecutive singles reach No. 1. Corbin’s new single, “A Girl Like You,” from his upcoming fourth studio album, is Top 30 and climbing and was released to rave reviews. Performing the national anthem and a 20-minute show prior to Corbin’s concert will be powerhouse country singer/ songwriter Casi Joy, who performed on season 12 of NBC’s “The Voice” in 2017. Joy’s mother is an Albert Lea High School graduate. On Aug. 1, entertainment industry icon Chubby Checker will perform. Checker is best known for popularizing “The Twist” — the only song to hit the No. 1 position twice in two different years. The song in 2008 was named the No. 1 song of the Billboard Hot 100’s first 50 years. Checker also invented and popularized many other dances, including The Fly, The Pony, The Shake and The Hucklebuck. Rising country music star Dylan Scott will perform Aug. 2. Scott released his romantic No. 1 hit “My Girl” in 2016, which earned Scott his first-ever Gold certification. His self-titled debut album landed at No. 5 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. He made a triumphant Grand Ole Opry debut and launched a headlining tour, selling out some of the nation’s biggest clubs for crowds of over 3,000, and now is circling back. His music features a high-octane mix of current country and pop-friendly Southern rock that celebrates both his down-home roots and big-city ambitions. Rock ’n’ roll will take over the fair Aug. 3 with bands Winger, Warrant and April Wine. See ENTERTAIN, Page 3

Warrant, a glam metal band formed in Los Angeles, is known for its debut album “Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich” and singles “Cherry Pie,” “Heaven” and “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Winger, on top of the music charts in the early 1990s, is known for singles “Headed for Heartbreak,” “Miles Away” and “Seventeen.” Formed in 1969 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, April Wine has had multiple Top-40 hits and was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in March 2009. The band, which has released more than 15 albums since the 1970s, has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award for being part of Canadian history for more than 40 years.

The group tours both the United States and Canada, giving audiences a mix of “straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll and power ballads,” according to information about the band. Finishing out the fair entertainment will be three-time Grammy nominated member of the Grand Ole Opry Trace Adkins on Aug. 4. Adkins’ trademark baritone has powered countless hits to the top of the charts. In addition to his music he has been a TV personality, actor, author and spokesman for the Wounded Warrior Project and American Red Cross. In recent years, he has performed for the nation’s service men and women across 11 USO Tours.

Woitas said fairgoers will see renovations taking place under a portion of the Grandstand this year, so it will be closed to vendors. “The structure is sound, but we just have to do some repair and maintenance,” Woitas said. The Kiddie Farmyard building has come down because of structural issues, and a new building will be in the works for the 2019 fair. In the meantime, all of what was housed in that building will be in the north pavilion where the Kids

Zone area will be. Aside from building repairs, the fair will have its parade each evening of the fair at 5 p.m. Included in the parade are the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, the Albert Lea Police Department, Albert Lea Fire Department, Albert Lea dance line, volunteers recognized during the fair and the fair mascots. “It gives people an opportunity to see the volunteers,” Woitas said. The parade goes through the main thoroughfare of the fairgounds, starting at the Fairlane Building, past the Cattle Barn and the Swine Barn and looping back around to end at the Fairlane Building.

New location for fair’s Kiddie Farmyard underway for 2019 By Sam Wilmes

sam.wilmes@albertleatribune.com

The Kiddie Farmyard at Freeborn County Fairgrounds will operate this year at a temporary location with plans to move into a new, larger facility in 2019. The center will be in the north pavilion of the fairgrounds during Freeborn County Fair from Tuesday to Aug. 5. The center is expected to include sows and their babies, calves, goats, lambs, rabbits, birds, chickens and hatching eggs. As of July 19, organizers were working on securing puppies. The Kid’s Zone is expected to include miniature golf, an obstacle course and bouncy house. The are between the two spaces is expected to house activities including coloring contests. Kid’s Zone Superintendent Jane

Haukoos said the former Kiddie Farmyard facility, built in the early 1900s,

“It’s not going to be like it was exactly, but we’ll get along for one year, and I’m looking forward to a new barn.” — Jane Haukoos, Kids Zone Superintendent was torn down May 21 after an engineer found it was not safe for occupation. See KIDDIE, Page 7
