Crossroads As a place of decision, Crossroads is committed to being radical, transformational, and relational in all that we do. No matter your age or stage, no matter your faults or failures, no matter your ups or downs, you are invited to join us. You will be welcomed, engaged, and challenged to worship God, grow relationally, serve others, and reach the world. We believe 1) the Bible is the Word of God and is able to be understood and applied to our daily lives; 2) that Jesus, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose from the dead; 3) the Holy Spirit indwells every follower of Jesus and empowers us to live the Christian life; 4) the local church is the hope of the world. Come and join us as each of us takes the next step in our spiritual journey. Autumn teaching series titled Transformed begins Sunday, September 28.

Rev. Christopher Martin 490 Pearl Street PO Box 23 Emmons, MN 56029 “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.” (John 1:16) It is because of the grace and love of God that Round Prairie Lutheran Church came into being in the year 1865. During the past 149 years, many people have come to know of God’s grace and love through the ministry which has taken place in this congregation. As we enter 2015 and beyond, may it be our continued goal and desire to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” (II Peter 3:18)

Villa Maria celebrates its history FRONTENAC — The Villa Maria Retreat and Conference Center opened its doors Sunday, offering a one-day glimpse into its storied history. Both community members and onetime students of the former boarding school were invited to attend. Women came from all over to explore the halls they once called home. Sarah McClellan, executive director of the Villa Maria Retreat and Conference Center said Sunday was the first time they’ve hosted an all-class reunion. “We just decided it was high time,” she said. The Academy of Our Lady of the Lake began, under the direction of the Ursuline Order of Catholic Nuns, in 1881 as a boarding school for young women, drawing students from all over the world. In 1885, Gen. Israel Garrard, an original founder of Frontenac, donated 124 acres and a new building to the school. In 1891, the building was completed and the school renamed Villa Maria Academy. The academy grew for nearly 78 years. In 1957, the school opened its doors to day students, and girls from Red Wing and Lake City began attending. “It was a great place to go to school,” said Jan Bruce, a member of the Villa Maria board and an alumna of the school.

She was part of the 1969, and final, graduating class. The school was run by a group of nuns until a fire in March 1969 destroyed the main building. “It was one of those freaky early spring thunderstorms,” Bruce said. She said lightning struck the wooden boarding school’s tower in the early morning. The morning was cold, snowy, and windy, which fueled the flames. “(The school) went up like a tinderbox,” Bruce said. Bruce said water from a nearby pool was used to fight the fire and save nearby buildings. In the end, though, the 78 yearold building was destroyed. The academy came to an end that year, but Villa Maria did not. instead of rebuilding the schools, the nuns turned the buildings spared by the fire into a retreat and conference center nestled in the lush foliage of Frontenac State Park. Bruce said part of the decision to turn away from the boarding school had to do with changing demand. “It was just a declining interest in boarding schools,” she said. Now, the retreat center caters to a large variety of groups. McClellan said they host everything from church retreats, to yoga retreats, and family reunions to weddings.
